Victoria Court Hotel Sydney
Ranked #14 of 57 Sydney B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 5, 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Victoria Court for two nights in May and had a really nice time. The staff is extremely friendly, we were given a nice welcome when we arrived, and our bags were carried up the stairs for us as we were on the second floor! Great value for a hotel in Sydney. Our stay included breakfast which was nice - a variety of cereals, juices, fruit, toast. Our room was supposed to have just a double bed, but we got upgraded to a king, which was a really nice surprise! The location was amazing - just up the street from Kings Cross Station. A few reviews remark upon the neighborhood, but in my opinion it was very safe. And if you're staying with young kids and don't want to pass by the few shops with "adult themes" just exit the station through the Victoria Road exit. The hotel is on Victoria Street after all, which is a quite beautiful street. We very much enjoyed our stay there and will definitely be staying there again if we get to privilege to visit Sydney in future!

Room Tip: you should ask for a room with window

This is a very good value place to stay in Sydney. The location is hard to beat - very close to trains and buses to the city. You could walk to the city in about 30 minutes. There are many interesting restaurants within easy walking distance around Kings Cross and the Darlinghurst Road/Victoria Street areas, from the upmarket and expensive to the most basic.

The B&B is located within an expensive residential area and is two terrace houses joined together. We had a room at the top of the house (room 7) which was very clean, quiet and comfortable. The bed was a king size.
There were over 30 steps to our room so if you are unable to walk up steps then you need to consider a ground floor or 2nd floor room.

Breakfast was a disappointment. It was basic Australian continental. Unimaginative cereal options, brewed tea and coffee, tinned fruit. No fresh fruit, yoghurt, or anything hot. However it was well presented and plentiful. We felt a little cramped in the otherwise bright and clean breakfast room.

Room Tip: A room at the top level is probably the best option if you don't mind climbing the stairs.

After being hit by the staggering prices during our stay in Australia, we were pleased to find the Victoria Court, to be a most welcome, comfortable, affordable and convenient choice in Sydney.
Our rooms were located atop a narrow staircase (note: no elevators) however were comfortable and accommodating. Breakfast, acceptable and cheery in the common room.
We really appreciated the location. Albeit, down a street with many hostels and backpacker lodgings, many fine restaurants were situated close by and easy access to King's Cross subway.
A brisk walk to the Opera House through the park, and from there The Rocks, Quay etc.
On a budget, yet require clean, safe lodging?....I would recommend a stay at The Victoria Court Hotel.

Room Tip: Remember...no elevator.

We stayed at the Victoria Court Hotel twice, at the beginning and end of our stay. We loved the location: close to metro, restaurants, but especially appreciated its closeness to public transport, which we used often. The neighborhood is lovely, and we found the B&B a great value for an expensive place like Sydney. The staff was very helpful; they kept some wine for us to pick up on our return, and it was still there when we returned. They also let us leave our son's shoes to pick up, which was really nice of them. I also shifted our dates 2 or 3 times, and it was never a problem for them, and they never made me feel like I was inconveniencing them.

Our first room was in the front, and was small but comfortable. On our return, we were given a balcony room which was absolutely wonderful! We had french doors leading onto the balcony, the room was large and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Although both rooms were at the front on the street, we did not have any noise to speak of whether the windows were open or closed.

Keep in mind that the B&B has been around for a long time, and the rooms are decorated appropriately for the period, which I love. The bed was really comfy. The bathrooms are small; you won't be brushing your teeth while your partner dries her hair! Again, its an older building (which is part of the charm), but it takes some maneuvering.

The breakfast consists of croissants, different kinds of bread, muesli, canned fruit, coffee/tea, and some cereals. It would be nice if there had been yoghurt (for those of us who need a protein start to the morning) and fresh fruit, but we never went hungry. The coffee was great!

Re: internet....every place we stayed on our trip charged for internet, and the service was generally poor. We were not able to get it to work for us, and we weren't charged for it. But expect weak but pricey internet service at pretty much any hotel in Australia; at least that was our experience.

One suggestion I would have: put a comfortable sitting chair in the room so there is a place to sit. There was a desk chair in the large room, but you wouldn't want to sit in it for a long time.

I would definitely stay here again, and I would book the balcony room!

Our agency in Paris booked us into this charming hotel. The room was very nice and clean and the bed comfortable. We also liked the atmosphere and the beautiful Victorian breakfast room. The location is excellent, near to everywhere. In the quarter there are many good restaurants, including Mère Catherine, a lovely French restaurant. Our only regret is that we did not stay long enough, maybe next time. Mercy you to all the staff of Victoria Court for the good service and hospitality. Best regards from Paris. Au Revoir!
