Did the Spit to Manly walk Saturday morning. It's a lovely walk and most enjoyable. The path through the national park is picturesque with some great harbour views. Word of warning, not a good walk for those with injuries as there are lots of stairs, some quite rough. Otherwise excellent.

I have visited Sydney many times with work and although hiked the Bondi to Bronte walk on numerous occasions, I have never hiked along the Manly Scenic walkway, so on a sunny winters day I decided to do just that.

This is a great hike for locals and tourists alike, I am writing this review however for people who are unfamiliar with the trail, so for those of you who know Manly well please bear with me.

To get to the hike from downtown Sydney, you will need to take a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, you will find that these depart from Wharf 3 every thirty minutes on the hour and on the half hour. The ferry ride should take approximately thirty minutes, although I doubt you will be clock watching as the views are so special. Once you arrive at Manly Wharf, either head over to the information centre (directly in front of the wharf) and pick up a simple map for your hike or alternatively turn left from the wharf and take the concrete path that runs behind the beach, this is the Manly Scenic Walkway. This well marked trail will take you all the way from Manly to The Spit a distance of 10km, and which would take most capable walkers approximately three hours to complete allowing for stops for photos and time to admire the breathtaking vistas.

This walk takes you along the beautiful coastal path, amazing viewpoints, hidden beaches and through Australian bush. In fact you would never know that you are within such close proximity to a major city. The path is well marked and you cannot get lost. It is safe to walk by yourself even as a lone female on their own. Remember however, the Australian sun is strong so wear sunscreen and good study shoes, bring plenty of water, a hat and even a swimsuit for a quick dip along the way.

Once you get to the end of the hike, you will see The Spit Bridge. Cross the bridge and just over the far side you will see a bus stop on the right hand side which will take you all the way back to Manly Wharf where you began your hike. These buses are regular, so will won't have to wait long.

This hike can either be done in an afternoon, resting weary feet for a well earned beer at the wharf on your return, or you could make it into a fabulous day out taking a picnic and stopping along the way and one of the beautiful secluded beaches. Whatever you choose, you will not be disappointed this really is on of the best hikes I know so close to a city.

Living so close you don't tend to do these things, and although hearing this walk was good I was still impressed at how picturesque this walk was.

So close to the city but you get a real appreciation of the "Australian way of life" by taking this walk, as well as some of the best views in the world.

This is the cheapest, best ferry ride outside of Seattle area. The view coming back into the Circular Quay is the best to be had of both the bridge and Opera house. And walking the boardwalk is lovely for all ages in Manly. Go to the right and there is a lovely park and great restaurant about half hour down.

This walk positions you in the holiday atmosphere of downtown manly and its splendid surf beach, before passing along quieter shoreline and cliff top streets and unspoilt bushland. It features marvelous views and commanding architecture.
From the surf club follow Marine Drive walkway around fairy bower. The rock pool is very pretty and leads to Shelly Beach,a secluded snorkeling and scuba diving spot,as well as, an ideal spot for the kids. Eat at Le Kiosk, a smart restaurant.
Walk up the path to the headland viewing platforms overlooking the vast ocean.into Bower Street, through the car park. Follow the road high above Fairy Bower passing the homes like Spanish Mission and Neo-Georgian. This will lead you To The Tourism and Hotel management school which shows its proud Romanesque and Neo-gothic lines to perfection.
Turn into Darley street at the top of which turn into North Head Reserve. Follow onto Collins Beach Road down to to the bushland alive with bird calls, lizards, paperbark trees, banksias and smooth-barked apple trees. At road end, follow the track back to the Ferry wharf at Manly pier.
Did you enjoy,yourself?
