Definitely go here if you're new to Sydney especially on a Saturday when the markets happen! Good free history of the rocks (or there is a tour you can do), or just walk around and enjoy the beautiful views of Sydney

We had a good walk around the rocks area one day and found it full of history of early Sydney. It has some very old lovely looking houses in the area and lovely little shops to browse in. We found the best ice cream shop here by circular quay. The area was reasonable priced for food but expect to pay more as this is a more expensive part of Sydney after all.

The Rocks area is the most historic area of Sydney so it is worth a little exploration. The best thing about it is that it is not completely touristy although there are a few stores that absolutely are. That aside, the old cobbled streets and the restored woolstore buildings and the tiny houses will give you a great feeling as to the early settlement in Sydney. Being in the heart of the business district there are also plenty of good restaurants at all price points and of course the Aussie Pub which is worth a visit for a drink or a "counter lunch". There are markets on the weekends and festival activity throughout the year and of course it is also home to the Museum of Contemporary Art on the waters edge.

Due to it's location there is no getting away from the fact that the Rocks are FULL of tourists. With the international terminal located there it means there are loads of Americans (mainly) that swamp the place. I would suggest steering clear of here when there is a ship alongside. However, when there are no ships the place has got some fairly decent restaurants and some good bars too. Be adventurous and get in to the lane ways and see what you can find.

The Rocks Area is full of History, and all the Old buildings have been Preserved, it is lovely to take two or three hours and have a wander around the Area. There are nice Restaurants and Cafe for a bite to eat,or just to sit and take everything in, and lots of lovely shops. The Rocks Markets on the weekends, also wonderful views of the Harbour and the Opera House. Regards, Marion.
