Owner description: Built in 1858 Sydney Observatory is a fascinating heritage site and public observatory. The quintessential visit is a night tour of 90 minute duration which includes telescope viewing and a Space Theatre experience with a planetarium experience in cloudy weather. Night tours ($18/22 adult) must be booked and prepaid. Day tours are designed for tourists and include a Planetarium 'virtual sky' experience, solar viewing (weather permitting) and a Space Theatre in 30-40 minute tours. Entry to the Observatory is free during the day, tours are a small extra charge ($10 adult or you can use the iventure Sydney card) but well worth it to experience astronomy and solar viewing with an astronomer.

Having lived in Sydney for over 30 years, this was surprisingly my first visit to the observatory. We did a night tour using an Entertainment Book voucher (2 for the price of 1) so it was good value. I felt the 3D theatre session took a little longer than necessary and would've preferred more time to look around the Observatory building. The planetarium session and telescope were great however.

Did the night star star gazing tour with my girlfriend and we had a great night! The tour guide was fantastic, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I'm not big into star gazing and this was a great introduction and brilliant value. The 3d mini film was great, and the observatory telescope was really interesting, I would 100% recommend this, great value, something different and a chilled out night!

What should have been a really good tour was ruined by including far too many people in the group and allowing young children on the 8.15 tour. As a result what we actually saw was very limited and what we could hear above the noise of children and parents chattering was very little. And then of course the tour proceeded to the theatre with the same group and the same noise - so we gave up and left.
Not worth the time or money.

Hi MO4014,

I am suspecting you visited during a school holiday period when there are families with children on most of the tours. It is not possible for us to control who brings children and who doesn't and your visit was not typical, in fact most non-holiday tours at 8:15pm are only adults.

It was a pity you left early. Typically the theatre session is guide-led and interesting, then you would have been taken outside to another telescope or view the constellations with a laser pointer. This would have given you an opportunity to view more through the telescope.

If you come back to Sydney, I hope you give Sydney Observatory another go!

Went there with my friend.. And absolutely enjoyed the tour. It was raining that day but miraculously cleared at night and saw some cool stuff.. The guide was friendly, humorous and knew his stuff. I would definetly go there again.

We loved visiting The Observatory and seeing the moon and Saturn through the roof telescope. The Aboriginal guide introduced us to some dreamtime stories and showed us the emu in the Milky Way. What a fabulous night activity. Don't miss it!
