What makes it so special are the volunteer guides, mostly Holocaust survivors, whose gentleness belies the horrors they endured. I've been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and the Sydney Museum doesn't compete, nor try to, but talking (or listening) to the guides is a privilege not afforded to many.

If you want to learn about Jews in Australia, this is it. Currently they have a great special exhibit on Australian clothing designers and a good history of Jews in both Sydney and all of Australia. We combined it with services at the Great Synagogue and checking out the eastern suburbs where many of the Jews live in Sydney.

We visited here on a weekend in the Cross in 2010. The displays are fantastic and beautifully presented. The highlight was chatting with a museum volunteer who had been sent to Auschwitz as a 14 year old. To hear his story was a remarkable thing. Highly recommended

Everyone from the very young to the more mature visitor should visit the Sydney Jewish Museum. This museum covers all the facets of a fascinating religion and culture.
With volunteer guides- some who have experienced living through the Holocaust- you feel comfortable asking all your questions and gaining new insight and perspective on a religion that spans over 5500 years.
Easy to wander at your own pace. Lots of displays that are interactive for the viewer. Take your time. You will learn so much even though you might think that you know a lot already. Extremely worthwhile.
