the museum has some very interesting permanent exhibits and is perpetually updating these, as well as having some very interesting traveling exhibitions, for example, the alexander the great exhibit and the teracota warriors were some of my favourites.

We come here a few times every year. There is always something new and great if you are interested in dinosaurs. My son loves this place too....

“Showing its age”

I tend to really enjoy museums, but found this one to be fairly underwhelming. The focus seems to be more towards children, which is fine, but overall I found the building to have a lot of wasted space that could have packed in more displays.

This is a fairly typical national-level museum. By that, I mean that it has a national focus towards general exhibits…ie. minerals of Australia, animals of Australia, dinosaurs formerly of Australia, etc. Kids will love the dinos but will probably be bored to tears looking at rock samples. Some of the areas unique to Australia such as the Aboriginal displays were very interesting, but also very small.

If you’re pressed for time and can only see one attraction in the Hyde Park area, I would recommend choosing the Hyde Park Barracks over the museum. While it does have the Aussie focus, I just found the museum to be dated with a lot of similar exhibits to other national-level museums in other countries – so if you’ve been to the Smithsonian, you’re not really going to miss much. Nothing here really stood out as a “must-see.”

“Alexander the Great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2013

Pretty good exhibition - if a bit wordy. This is a particular issue as that isn't conducive to massive crowds. Queuing to read lots of stuff that you can read anywhere. The interactive map was great for the kids and I think the exhibition would have been more engaging if there was more of that. There is a lot to see and it is exhausting - a few more seats wouldn't have gone astray! Try and see it when there aren't too many people - we went around 12 and when we came out at 1 there was nobody queuing.
