Being tourist in Sydney, getting to the Art Gallery of NSW
took some effort in getting there, but It's worth it. It takes
some walking to get there. The gallery opened later than
what was listed on the web. It was very clean, the ceilings
were quite high so one has to stand back to really enjoy
the paintings. There was a section including modern and aboriginal works. We spent about 3 hours in the gallery.

We stop for lunch at the café and ordered a kangaroo lasagna. It was very tasty like lamb. The portion was generous. You gotta to try eating a kangaroo dish while you in Australia. Since we
got caught in the rain storm, we took a cab back to our hotel. The
charges added up quite quickly as we pay $24.00.

The America exhibition is well worth seeing, with a superb collection of American artists from Colonialism to Abstract Expressionism and really well curated. The restaurant serves lovely food both indoors and outdoors. The Domain is beautiful to walk through with delightful plantings. Many thousands had gathered today early in order to view the New years Eve fireworks spectacular.

We regularly visit the Gallery from interstate. Access is so easy, with the train taking you right from the airport to Museum Station which is a pleasant walk in the park to the Gallery. Although we usually time our visits for blockbusters we always take time to look at the other exhibitions as well, which are free (although there are charges for temporary exhibitions). The collection is diverse and well displayed. The special exhibitions are usually excellent and if crowded you can book tickets and entry times in advance. Amenities including the cafe and shop are very good.

We were there for the American Art exhibition which runs until February. Well worth a visit although I was disappointed at the range of postcards available. The shop for this exhibition includes an impressive collection of books about cooking, quilting and crafts.

Over numerous floors this art gallery has interesting pieces to look at. While the European classical collection doesn't stand up to those on display in large museums in Europe, they are still quality pieces.

The lower ground floor houses some aboriginal art, strangely under visited while I was there.

My favourite was the modern work, the "basement" walk through exhibit the security guard standing her by points out, and the glass mosaic wall.

Definately worth a visit. Leave all back packs and day packs with the staff at the front door.

Nice gallery with very well laid out. I always enjoy sightseeing of the pictures or artifacts displayed there. Most of them from European and Australian arts. However don't expect to see the most famous painters's work of art such as Picasso etc since they have none of that I know. But for me, I am very pleased with the collection since I am not an art person. They look incredible good works. I like to stop by there on the way to circular quay during my day off. Relaxing and admire the beauty of art. They do have some exhibition sometimes and the museum admission is free.
