It is wonderful that this gallery has free entry. The art works on display are world class and it is a privilege that anyone can go in and enjoy them at no cost. The location of the gallery, being set in the gardens is also wonderful and then the views over the harbour from the coffee shop makes each visit worthwhile. I love the gift shop. It is reasonably priced and has very interesting pieces that you won't find anywhere else. The special exhibits that are brought in are always fabulously curated and well worth the price of the ticket. The Art Gallery is often a place that only tourists go, but locals should see it too and be thrilled at this world class facility.

Great gallery, with an excellent aboriginal art collection. A great insight into native Australian culture. Also an excellent restaurant -try the beetroot salad! They're also open late on Wednesday evenings until 9pm, for an extra large dose of culture.

AGNSW sits in the domain parklands next to the Botanic Gardens and Harbour. It takes 10 mins to walk through the Domain from the CBD. In Summer the gallery stays open late at least 1 night a week so check the website. A decent gallery experience will take you between 2 and 3 hours depending on whether you also do one of the optional special exhibitions (of which there are usually 2 on concurrently) at a cost (well worth it). The gallery space is approx twice the size of SF's Legion of Honour Museum, and includes an excellent modern extension housing a good affordable restaurant with a north facing outdoor terrace offering harbour views and an enormous historic Moreton Bay Fig tree. I am Australian who takes Art holidays o/s and I am very proud of our AGNSW. It is unpretentious so don't be afraid of showing up "looking like a tourist with a back pack" as you can cloak your bags for free. The collection of contemporary Australian big name artists is extensive and impressive, and there is an equally worthy collection of international art (modern and period). The gift shop may be a bit of a dissapointment to those used to stores like the de young but that's a small criticism. Check out what is happenning in the Domain and the Botanical Gardens before you arrive so you can maximise your day, or walk a little further north past the entrance and turn right to take the stairs to the excellent bars and restauarants on the waterfront at the Woolloomoolloo Finger Wharf. This area is very safe for travellers.

The Art Gallery of NSW is located in a beautiful location next to the Botanic Gardens and in an impressive building. A good mix of collections of Australian, European and Asian origin as well as appealing modern art. However, there was an obvious lack of art from one of Australia's nearest neighbours - New Zealand - and more recent work e.g. by Binney or prominent Maori painters or sculptors, or Maori cloaks would be a useful addition to the collection.
