Great location which was the main reason why we chose the York Apartments. Price wise, you can't get much better for being so close to Darling harbor. Comfortable and large space for just 2 of us. Clean and reasonably modern. Not the best of views from our apartment, but you can't have everything. Many thanks to the staff for making us feel so welcome.

Arrived early morning, well before check in time. The staff were really friendly, and told us they would have our one bedroom suite ready in about an hour, this was much appreciated after an ovenight flight from Tokyo. To pass the time went for a walk to Circular Quay to get our first view of the Opera house and bridge and pinch ourselves that we were really in Australia! We found location of the apartments to be brilliant and could walk to all the main attractions with ease.
Found apartment to be modern, clean and spacious bed very comfortable, full kitchen with washer and dryer in bathroom which did have a bath and a separate shower.(When we arrived the balcony was flooded but the maintainence guy cleared the blockage within an hour of us being in the room. I think if we had not arrived early then we would not even known about the problem) The only down side to our apartment was we had no view from the balcony as we were surrounded and overlooked by offices. This did not detract to much from our 3 night stay as we intended on seeing as much of Sydney as possible.

We have stayed in the York Apartments previously and had no hesitation in returning for our second and third visits. The apartments are spacious, spotlessly clean, offer a properly equipped practical kitchen area and balcony (although be prepared for some traffic noise when you are out there). Apartments also come with their own washer/dryer (ours was a little dated but who cares – it worked!). There is also a small but very welcoming pool, large hot tub and small gym area on the 6th floor.

Staff were friendly and helpful and apartment serviced daily to a high standard. They were also happy to store one suitcase for us, free of charge, when we went to Queensland for a week.

After a welcoming reception area, the hallways leading to the apartments are a tad dreary and could really do with some brightening up, but don’t let this put you off, as the apartments themselves are bright and airy.

The location of the York is excellent, a few minutes walk from Wynyard station (direct link to airport) and a 10 -15 minute walk from the Rocks and Circular Quay (or one stop on the train).

Our Tip: If you are going to visit several places in Sydney, buy a 7 day Travel Pass which also included the ferries to get around easily and at best value. I think that to purchase a Travel Pass which includes the ferries as well as bus and train you can only purchase this from Circular Quay but do double check.

What others have said about the great location - near Circular Quay, the Rocks, Sydney Opera House and Wynyard Train Station - is all true. No problems with the kitchen amenities too. But that's where the honeymoon ends. The internet was a very pricey A$30 a day for unlimited use, although there was a weekly plan for A$125 (make sure you ask at the reception if you’re staying that long). I had small quibbles such as not having a sponge to wash utensils and crockery, although oddly enough, dishwashing liquid was provided. A box of complimentary washing powder was promised at the time of booking but the front desk insisted that washing powder was chargeable from the first box onwards. Anyway, all these minor annoyances would have been easily forgiven if not for the following episodes with the washer.

The nightmare began in earnest about 3 days into my stay when the staff had the washer in my apartment replaced. Somehow they thought it best to keep the guest in the dark about this matter. Unfortunately for myself, I had been piling up my soiled laundry in the old washer, and the maintenance staff did not even bother to check if there were any clothes inside before replacing the washer! Imagine my shock when I returned that night around 10pm to find all my clothes missing. I actually thought that someone had broken into the room before thinking that housekeeping might have sent the clothes for laundry service by mistake. In trying to query housekeeping at that moment, it was then that I discovered that housekeeping had gone home for the day – so housekeeping, and also maintenance, are both not available 24/7. Anyway, the gentleman at the front desk finally managed to locate my clothes in the old washer which had been sent to some storage area. The case of the disappearing clothes is apparently the mystery-thriller that you get for A$215 a night.

Never mind. A couple of days later, the simple act of using the washer turned out to have a rather complicated ending. All was well until the final spin cycle when the washer began spinning so violently that it sounded like a train roaring through the entire apartment. Worst of all, it started making a horrible metallic clacking noise and I was so worried that something was going to explode and send shrapnel flying around the bathroom. And then BOOM! A deathly silence ensued. When I steeled my nerves to peek into the bathroom, I found the dryer, which had been stacked on the washer, on the bathroom floor instead, lying on its side. The dryer had unplugged itself from the electrical socket and the plastic casing around its door had fallen out. It was like a scene from an earthquake zone. My colleague was completely speechless at the utter devastation in the bathroom.

Needless to say, maintenance had knocked off for the day because it was already past 10pm. So there was nothing they could do until the following morning. What irked me even more was that the staff had the gall to suggest that I had overloaded the washer [It was only half full].

To cut a long story short, they promised to look into fixing the washer. I was probably a fool to have taken them at their word, because a few nights later, the same thing happened again when I tried washing my clothes a second time. This time, I deliberately reduced the washing load to just 2 pairs of jeans, and I took the additional precaution of lowering the machine spin rate. When I was woken up by another loud crash of the dryer in the bathroom, I knew then that the washer was beyond the point of redemption, and so was my impression of the York.

My concluding advice is this: If you have a weak heart, or if you have a history of hypertension, or simply just looking for someplace that is value-for-money, the York is probably not the place for you.

Location is fantastic in the CBD. Its close to the harbour, and right next to Wynyard station (brilliant for airport link and most other trains), and a Coles supermarket in the station too. Its not glamorous accommodation, being very dreary in the public areas, but the rooms are spacious and clean, staff are really helpful, air-con effective, and the bathrooms are good with excellent showers and laundry. So there is everything you need, at a good price, as long as you are not looking for luxury (and as long as you get one of the refurbished rooms). Agree with others' comments about high internet costs, but there are some free wireless cafes nearby (or Starbucks nextdoor has cheap wireless by the hour). We were on 18th floor and had great views across the rooftops. City noise of course - because its bang in the middle of the city!!

We went to Sydney in March 2008 to see a production of Carmen at the Sydney Opera House and this was the perfect spot to base ourselves. Four adults in a 2 bedroom apartment with spacious lounge, dining and kitchen. Just a short stroll down the hill is all the inner CBD sights Sydney has to offer. The stroll back up the hill after a big meal and a few drinks wasn't nearly as invigorating, but we all felt the after dinner exercise was hardly worth worrying about. Our apartment had a balcony where you could enjoy a pre-dinner drink and watch the traffic going on and off the expressway. Traffic noise wasn't an issue at night, but we were fairly high up. There was also a washing machine and dryer in the apartment which was unexpected and useful.

A huge bonus for this hotel is its proximity to Wynyard station. We flew into Sydney and instead of taxis, caught the train from the airport to Wynyard - it was then a very short walk to the Hotel. Also in the Wynyard station is a Coles Supermarket. It took me a while to locate it, but it is definitely there. We were able to stock up on breakfast ingredients and thus save more money. We had a lot of trouble finding a bottle shop nearby, but eventually located CBD Cellars in Carrington Street which sits down behind the bus area opposite Wynyard Station (about 5 minutes walk).

The Room was well serviced and the staff on the front desk were very helpful and friendly. We arrived about an hour before check-in time, but were advised our room was ready and waiting for us.

It might not be the cheapest place to stay but its proximity to the CBD, supermarket and bottle shop and also the size of the apartment (which made eating in your apartment a pleasure) all work towards making this an excellent accommodation choice next time you're in Sydney. We'll all be staying there again.

We stayed in The York for a total of 8 nights (in 2 periods) during February 2009 - and enjoyed it very much. For a sum that could have bought us a medium room in a "regular" hotel, we got an apartment (1-bedroom deluxe) fully equipped, but also fully serviced (just like in a hotel). This is indeed a great deal.
The staff are effective and nice, the rooms are super-clean and useful, and - the location is excellent, just in the middle of the middle of Sydney, with many sights and resturants in walking distance (the harbour, the rocks, darling harbour, the CBD).
The only thing we can recommend is to ask for a high-level room, for less noise. It wasn't noisy for city-people like us, but maybe for others it will be.
Enjoy!
