“Fantastic Location”
Reviewed March 9, 2007

This is a low rise hotel in the historic Rocks District of Sydney, situated 5 minutes on foot from Circular Quay - a hub for all the ferries and bus transport (local and tourist) - and 10 minutes on foot from the Opera House. Excellent views overlooking the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge from floors 5 and 6. There is only a breakfast room available in the hotel , but as there are plenty of good restaurants virtually on your doorstep, this is not a problem. We had a room on the 6th floor with a small balcony, but with views which could not be equalled in Sydney. The room had a comfortable double bed, a small kitchenette and a shower/bathroom. The decor was light and pleasing; everything was clean and tidy. This hotel is not luxurious, but the location and views more than make up for this. There is a laundry on the first floor, for which there is a small charge. There is also a small swimming pool, and a fitness room if you have excess energy. There is also computer/internet access available in the lobby for a small charge. Would (and will) certainly stay there again and would wholeheartedly recommend it. We paid approx £114 per night.

We booked this hotel thinking that, for the price, it should be a very nice place to stay. The girl at reception was so rude and unhelpful that we almost left, but had paid in full up front. There was no service at all, staff grumbled rather than give us information, our room was not cleaned on the Sunday and it took us 3 trips to the parking station and back as each person gave us different information regarding payment and cost of parking. We booked and requested a twin share in a townhouse (and called prior to arrival to confirm a TWIN room). We got the townhouse, but upon arrival were told that it was not a twin, but a double and that we would have to pay extra to use the sofa bed. This is at over $300 a night anyway!! The townhouses are right on the street and very near a popular pub, so we basically had no sleep all night. I have stayed in many hotels in many cities around the world, and I have never felt so passionate about writing a review, but this hotel is so very, very bad and the staff are SO VERY RUDE, unhelpful, arrogant and dismissive that I had to warn people to BOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!! THIS PLACE IS THE PITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Liked — Absolutely nothing.
  • Disliked — The lack of service and arrogance of staff.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 days and loved it. It's not a big hotel and it does not have the amenities of a big hotel, but if you are looking for a nice accomodation in a fabulous location, this hotel is great. Our room was ready when we arrived at 11am. We got settled and enjoyed the magnificent view of the Sydney Harbour from our balcony. The room was nicely equipped and was clean. This may not matter to most, the shower was great. After being on a plane for 17 hours, to feel clean mattered to me!

The location could not be better. It is 1 block from Circular Quay and in the heart of the Rocks which is a great area in general. We had easy access to all the public transportation which is the best way to get around Sydney. There are restaurants, shops and pubs within a very short walk from the hotel.

The staff were very helpful and prompt. We had a smoke detector beeping and our safe would not operate and they were up to repair both within minutes of our call. We had no problems getting a late check-out and they were helpful in telling us how to get places we wanted to go.

This hotel would be ideal for anyone staying a week or more as the room has a well-equipped kichenette. We didn't use it much, but had we stayed in Sydney longer, we likely would have.

I just don't understand why people love this hotel. My husband and I stayed here for two nights (we were supposed to stay for 5!) in January 2006. When we arrived, our room was supposed to be ready but they made us wait an hour! When we finally got up to the room, they gave us a room that hadn't even been cleaned!! We went back downstairs, they gave us another key and we ended up in a room with cheap, walmart-esque furniture and absolutely no view. We were highly disappointed- we'd booked this hotel based on all these great reviews on tripadvisor.com! After the second night I just couldn't stand it, afterall, this was our honeymoon trip! My husband and I were walking down George St. that night, the main drag in sydney, and stumbled upon the Saville 2 Bond Street hotel. We walked in and asked how much the rooms were and the manager offered to take us up and show us one! She was so nice. When we got up there, it was a studio with a travertine shower, washer and dryer, kitchen with dishwasher, microwave and granite countertops! At the time, the room worked out to be about $200 US a night! We were in heaven! We immediately walked back to the Rendevous, called hotes.como and canceled our resrevation and the next day finally switched hotels. I highly recommend the Saville 2 Bond Street hotel. It's literally a 5 minute walk to Circular Quay and the rocks and a block away from the Wynyard train station. The staff was extremely nice and accomodating and were totally sympathetic with our bad experience at the Rendevous. Don't stay at this hotel, stay at the Saville!!

We stayed here for three nights at the beginning of our Aussie Odyssey, and the final night before we flew home. I made the booking by emailing directly to the hotel, and they were fantastic, everything I asked for was delivered, a fourth floor room with a balcony giving views of both the Bridge and Opera House. Unfortunately we never met him, but many thanks to Damien Kelly for making our holiday so special.

The location is super, smack in the heart of The Rocks. Close enough to the tourist centre, bars, cafes, shops, and restaurants, but just far enough away from the hurly burly for a quiet night’s sleep. Circular Quay is five minutes walk away so every possible form of transport, including the airport train, is right there.

As well as the balcony, our room had a double bed, plus plenty of space for the sitting area, dining area, and fully equipped kitchenette. The room was clean, well fitted, and the bed comfortable, the bathroom had a bath with shower. We didn’t eat at the hotel, but only because we were out so early and back so late each day.

The hotel has two pay-per-use internet machines, and a wireless network that didn’t work at all when we were there. The Rocks tourist centre also has an internet café, and offers 30 minutes free wireless access for laptop users.

We felt the location and standard of the hotel was excellent value. If you join the Rendezvous Hotel’s eClub programme (free to join), you get a 5% discount on bookings using the group’s website.

You'd be mad to miss it!

Not sure what hotel some of the reviewers stayed in but after three stays we think this is best value in Sydney. Location could not be better. A bright sparkling clean room with a kitchenette and a small balcony with a view that includes the bridge AND the Opera House!
For many multiples more money you could stay at Four Seasons or Westin and have comparable views and an equal location but why spend the money! Our only disappointment was that during our first 2 stays breakfast was included .. now it is a high priced add on. Try the small bakery a short walk down the stairs to the next lower street.
