“Quirky Hotel , Superb Location”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

We stayed at the Sebel Pier 1 in a harbor view room for 3 nights over Easter . The location overlooking Walsh Bay and its piers was fantastic - great base to wander into the Rocks and Circular Quay to catch the ferries.
As far as our experience at the Sebel went ......
Pros : (1) The food at their restaurant (we ate there the first night) was very good and reasonably priced . The only downside to our dining experience was the kitchen lost our order somehow after presenting our entrees and we waited an hour for the mains to come out . Unfortunate but did not spoil the evening - great views from restaurant across Walsh Bay.
(2) Room was large , spacious and comfortable with very good adjoining bathroom. Bed was a little hard for our liking but by the third night we had got used to it.
(3) Hard to beat the location - peaceful and surprisingly quiet even though positioned at the base of the Bridge.
(4) Pleasant staff

Cons : (1) Quirky toilets . Based on airplane style flushing to save water - outrageously noisy when you do flush which is fine if it's only your room you are listening to . Unfortunately , in the morning in particular ,you can hear other rooms flushing - like canons going off in the distance - quite strange and initially a little disturbing .
(2) Air conditioning in our room was freezing - did not matter what you adjusted the temperature to it was stuck on "Antarctic" . We turned it off in the end - so it wasn't a major issue for us .
(3) Breakfast seemed a bit overpriced to us ($35 per head) . We dined at a couple of different cafes in the Rocks and enjoyed really good breakfasts for a considerably less .

Over all , we enjoyed the ambiance of the Sebel and did not regret staying there .

We stayed at The Sebel to attend a show at the Opera House. Our room faced the next Pier and we saw a cruise ship sail past on the morning we checked out. Our room was a good size, and comfortable, it was nice to be able to sit and watch the harbour activity from the comfort of our room. We booked through the hotels website and were very happy with the package which included breakfast and parking. The location is perfect, such a pleasant walk to Circular Quay, The Rocks etc. We will definitely be returning.

This was our second stay at Pier One. The ambiance is lovely on the pier. People stroll and run by (sometimes with dogs) but that all adds to the ambiance which is both relaxing and interesting. There are a few cafes and restaurants within walking distance and we found a couple more this time which were not on the main road but on some piers further towards the theatres. There is a small bottle shop not too far away and the prices were quite reasonable considering the isolation and the size of the shop.

Previously we stayed on a higher level and when I was given a ground floor room, water view side I thought it may not be as good as the higher ones. This is because the room is fairly close to the restaurant and as there were tables, chairs and umbrellas outside the room I thought people would come and sit there and be noisy. I was wrong. We used the outdoor setting and it was lovely. The room had a glass sliding door onto the pier and you feel like it is all yours. Next time I would choose one of the bottom floor rooms. As previously mentioned by others there is a noise associated with the waves underneath the pier when boats pass. After we understood this it isn't a problem, only adds to the quirkiness of this hotel. The room was a good size, clean, and the maintenance people fixed a blind pronto when it became inoperable.

The hotel has a restaurant for those who wish to eat in. We didn't have dinner there but breakfast was included in our great deal. Also were two drinks on each night of our stay (2). Breakfast was a bit tired as it was precooked but some guests had eggs freshly cooked any way they wanted and they looked amazing. Sorry we didn't order them too. The staff at breakfast were so prompt and friendly. In fact all staff were great. The concierge was smiling and helpful, the receptionists were attentive and the barman very engaging. The wifi in the foyer was free too.

We don't normally return to hotels but look for new ones but this one is worth coming back to.

Room Tip: Ground level with water views are great if you like to sit outside and watch the boats and people go...

The location of the hotel is great. However I thought we paid too much for the room and the facilities.
You can get better deals in Sydney.
Don't get me wrong; it is a nice hotel and the rooms have a special feel to them. However paying 370 A$ for one night without breakfast is too much for me.
We had an offer from Wotif which made it worth the while (200A$), however I would not pay more.
Okay hotel, but value for money is less.
The receptionist was not overly friendly either. We will give it a pass.

I absolutely loved the rustic feel of the rooms, it was very quiet and restful. My husband and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and stayed for the night and only wish that we could have stayed longer
