The Langham, Sydney
Ranked #7 of 186 Hotels in Sydney
Reviewed June 18, 2010

We arrived at the hotel around 8am after almost 24 hours of traveling. Our room wasn't ready yet, but the hotel was more than accomodating. They let us use the showers in the hotel spa/gym to freshen-up before we went out for the day. When we came back around lunch, our luggage was already waiting for us inside our room. The hotel room was beautiful and very comfortable. The location was wonderful as well, less than a ten minute walk from Circular Quay and a five minute walk to Darling Harbor.

The service at the reception desk and the concierge were amazing. They recommended wonderful restraurants and great tours to take. The most impressive servise was when we inquired about surfing lessons. When we returned to the hotel a reservation had been booked in our names for the next day and all the details about surfing had been placed in our room. I felt like we received very personal service. Unlike some much larger luxury hotels, it seemed like the staff really went out of their way to ensure that every part of our stay was perfect. We had such a wonderful time at the Obervatory Hotel we will definately stay there again when we return to Sydney.

I knew our stay at the Observatory Hotel was going to to great the moment we arrived. We were greeted so warmly as if old friends & then shown to our room which was luxurious with a gorgeous balcony & all accessories taken into account. The bar stocked my favourite wine & a short walk to the city centre capped off a wonderful evening in the city. Breakfast is a treat & the staff were so attentive we didnt want to leave.A walk from Bondi to Coogee along the coast saw us retire to the spa for a recovery! The only good thing about leaving is the ease of getting back onto the Harbour Bridge for our journey back to the country!

We stayed at the Observatory for a weekend away. This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel. The service here is impeccable, the rooms are super clean and very comfortable. The rooms also have opening windows. Room service is fast and the food is always hot when it arrives (not so for some other hotels we have stayed in).
Beautiful indoor swimming pool and good gymnasium with several up market treadmills and a good range of free weights, fit balls etc.
We havnt tried any of the treatments yet at the spa but they sound like they have a varied range of treatments and packages available.
We hope to stay here again when we return to Sydney

We were looking forward to the boutique hotel as the reviews on Trip Advisor were all very positive..........

Positives:
Good location, nicely decorated, breakfast was well done, concierge was good. 3rd Floor room was quite big with a nice balcony.

Negatives:
Spa is fully booked 6-8 weeks ahead of time. There is no time reserved for paying hotel guests, thereby even on a cancellation list, we were unable to have a massage during our one week booking. Pool is nice but the hot tub is in bad repair, my foot was cut on the broken drain and many tiles are missing and in bad repair. View from third floor (top floor of the hotel) is limited and average.
The bed in our room sagged badly and needs to be replaced. Musty smell throughout the hotel, especially on the third floor. The hotel hallways look worn and the carpets are stained and in need of cleaning, especially in the elevators.

Note: We flew over from North America and booked our room arrival one day early in error. When we asked for that night to be removed from our bill, the manager offered 50% off. When we reminded him that we were staying for a week, the offer to remove the room was accommodated, but ONLY if we stayed at the hotel for the entire week. Due to the bed, lack of spa availability and poor conditions of the hot tub we decided to cut our losses and checked out early after three days anyway and paid the 50% for the room night we booked in error. We then moved to another hotel nearby in Sydney (Four Seasons). In the last six months, we have stayed at La Samana (St Martin) and Hotel Europe (Russia) both members of the Orient Express. Based on our experience at the Observatory, we will be avoiding the Orient Express chain as it was perfectly obvious that there is no loyalty or consideration given for repeat guests.

Our first trip to Sydney started off with one of the best hotel experiences anywhere. Our room was large and comfortable. Great bed and bath. Friendly staff was very helpful, especially restaurant and concierge and front desk. The location was quiet, yet we could walk to restaurants, Circular Quay, and to the city center.

Have visited this marvellous hotel on a number of occasions for both business meetings and for pleasure with my wife. The entire experience has always been exceptional and in particular must mention the Concierge (who we have discovered is a senior member of Les Clefs D'Or) and who has always gone out of his way to accommodate special requests with grace and kindness and with successful results on each occasion. The restaurant and the service are outstanding as are the rooms, all creating a superb package.

My partner and I stayed in a junior suite with water views and it was spectacular. We arrived and were met by a lovely man with an umbrella since it was raining and we booked in immediately, the girls on the front desk being delightful. We were shown to the suite and given a tour and everything was pristine. Lovely, comfortable bed, spacious and out-of-this-world bathroom. The rain shower is not to be missed and the bath is huge and deep.
There is turn-down service in the evening, which is wonderful.
We never managed breakfast (too comfortable a bed!) but we had room service which was amazing. A table is set up, the staff are tremendous and the food is delicious and there is plenty of it. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone working here. From the people who service the rooms to the front-of-desk people to the restaurant staff, everyone is terrific.
Had meals at both the Globe Bar and the Galileo Restaurant and the staff, the food and the atmosphere were wonderful. Do have High Tea, because it is not to be missed. And book for it in plenty of time, since people come from all over to experience it. I did leave it late, but the wonderful host took the time to make room for us and it was lovely.
Everyone was professional and very, very kind.
Will I stay anywhere else when next in Sydney? No, never again. It's going to be The Observatory Hotel from now on.
