From the moment we arrived we were very pleasantly surprised by the standard of friendly service of the hotel's concierge and reception staff - the sort of 5 star welcome we have experienced overseas, but not so much in other hotel chains in Australia. This is a boutique offering and it shows.
We stayed in a deluxe room for the first weekend in May - it was wonderfully large - really more of a suite size - comfortably furnished in a classical manner. I agree with fellow reviewers - it's an "olde world" style which is very elegant and quite charming. The bathroom was also full size with very big bath, separate rain shower etc.
I judge a 5 star property on its attention to detail and at The Observatory, it is all in the details. They offer a turn-down service - complete with hot chocolate or valerian tea for your evening wind down! Lovely touch, together with the little 'things to do' checklist card - eg to remind you to call home etc - complete with instructions on how to do so - right down to provision of the next day's weather forecast. We were particularly impressed with the cups supplied in the room - not your average half size tea cups as offered by most others, but a china mug of elegant proportions, a suitable size for any hot beverage you might enjoy. Peter Morrissey amenities were very nice and plentiful in supply. I particularly liked the Limone soap - excellent quality and size, with a beautiful lemongrass scent that lingered. Like some of the other hotel chains, they offer a pillow menu -and also alternate bedding if you prefer blankets rather than a duvet, for example.
We stayed on the Kent St side with views up to Observatory Hill, and it was very quiet. Great location.
As I was convalescing, we did not dine in the hotel's restaurants, but we will when we return. Room service food was typical but quality - best cheeseburger and fries I've had in years!!
Many people who heard we were staying here told me to try the spa - saying it's exceptional. I didn't this time, for the reason noted above, but will be sure to in future.
We were fortunate enough to stay here on a deal that meant it was exceptional value for money. Certainly, we would stay here again - it will be my first choice for Sydney accommodation in future, provided we can get it at a price that's right!
