“Five star welcome and service - a truly international standard boutique hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2012

From the moment we arrived we were very pleasantly surprised by the standard of friendly service of the hotel's concierge and reception staff - the sort of 5 star welcome we have experienced overseas, but not so much in other hotel chains in Australia. This is a boutique offering and it shows.

We stayed in a deluxe room for the first weekend in May - it was wonderfully large - really more of a suite size - comfortably furnished in a classical manner. I agree with fellow reviewers - it's an "olde world" style which is very elegant and quite charming. The bathroom was also full size with very big bath, separate rain shower etc.

I judge a 5 star property on its attention to detail and at The Observatory, it is all in the details. They offer a turn-down service - complete with hot chocolate or valerian tea for your evening wind down! Lovely touch, together with the little 'things to do' checklist card - eg to remind you to call home etc - complete with instructions on how to do so - right down to provision of the next day's weather forecast. We were particularly impressed with the cups supplied in the room - not your average half size tea cups as offered by most others, but a china mug of elegant proportions, a suitable size for any hot beverage you might enjoy. Peter Morrissey amenities were very nice and plentiful in supply. I particularly liked the Limone soap - excellent quality and size, with a beautiful lemongrass scent that lingered. Like some of the other hotel chains, they offer a pillow menu -and also alternate bedding if you prefer blankets rather than a duvet, for example.

We stayed on the Kent St side with views up to Observatory Hill, and it was very quiet. Great location.

As I was convalescing, we did not dine in the hotel's restaurants, but we will when we return. Room service food was typical but quality - best cheeseburger and fries I've had in years!!

Many people who heard we were staying here told me to try the spa - saying it's exceptional. I didn't this time, for the reason noted above, but will be sure to in future.

We were fortunate enough to stay here on a deal that meant it was exceptional value for money. Certainly, we would stay here again - it will be my first choice for Sydney accommodation in future, provided we can get it at a price that's right!

Fabulous hotel, oozing with old world charm. While The Observatory is in the centre of Sydney, it is located in a quiet tucked away corner of The Rocks, providing a peaceful haven from Sydney's hustle. Gorgeous furnishings in a beautiful building and a lovely atmosphere provided by the sensational staff who take pride in great service.
The pool, spa and fitness centre are amazing and have to be seen to be appreciated. The rooms are comfy and cozy, lovely furniture and great beds. The pillow menu is great fun!
Excellent service, great location and gorgeous staff.... Highly recommend to anyone who is after more than 'just a bed'. Will be returning to the Observatory very soon, just loved every minute.

The hotel is situated perfectly in Sydney. Not to far away from the CBD but enough to be away from the chaos.

The room was amazing, customer service amazing and the hotel had really nice facilities. We would reccommend this to anyone.

the room was delightful and really comfortable just what one would expect from the Orient-Express.
Not a good imagine when we arrived and someone was hoovering behind reception and even the receptionist found it hard to hear! but we got over that.
We had a great breakfast and the service was great.

Room Tip: not on the street side

My girlfriend and i went to see la taviata on the water in sydney harbour so i got us a junior suite at the Observatory based on a recommendation from a friend. I wanted to make an impression on my lady as we have both travelled the world extensively and stayed in exqisite hotels.

All i can say is, once we saw the room we didnt want to go to the opera! Mind you we did and after we sipped champagne on the balcony and our night was nothing short of majical. I cannot speak more higly of the staff as they had, imo super human sence. Everything went like clockwork and the politeness of service was outstanding. Needless to say the right impression was made and she said yes :-)

6 out of 5 stars if thats possible :-)

Cannot wait to stay there again

Regards

Mark de Berardinis

Room Tip: Junior suite is worth every penny :-)

This was our second stay, we managed to get a deal for the city view room, which included breakfast which made this a more affordable stay for us. The valet parking is $40, which is not bad for Sydney.

We took an elderly Aunt to "High Tea" this visit, we had the classic afternoon tea. The dining room is lovely, plush chairs, beautifully set tables, with a three tier cake plate of goodies, overall it was just divine & it will be a lasting memory I will treasure.

The room is luxurious comfort +. The king beds are comfy, you have a pillow menu to select whatever suits your needs. The bathroom is grand, marble, twin vanity, large bath, plus huge shower, with two shower heads, the rainwater shower head is a favourite of mine.

When the elevator doors open on basement level, the aroma of the products greets your senses, it is heavenly. The pool, is picture perfect, loved the fairy lights on the ceiling, just magical.

All the staff are very friendly & helpful.

The only area that could be improved, is free wi fi in the rooms.

Overall a memorable stay & yes we will definatley be back.

My husband and I spent the most glorious weekend here for our anniversary. From the moment we arrived, we were thoroughly spoiled - I have never experienced such wonderful customer service. The hotel itself is sumptuous...feels a little like going back in time in the best possible way. Such a beautiful break from all the uber-modern hotels that are everywhere these days. From the delicious sheets to the way tea is served on a silver tray, it's just all class. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant were stunning and they do a killer martini. Seriously, this place is my nirvana here - couldn't recommend enough.

Room Tip: We were on level 1 which I think is a smoking level - didn't bother us but if you are sensitive...
