Its very rare that a CBD hotel can make you feel so.
I stayed with my wife in this hotel for 4 night last March.
I'm a tough critic when it comes to 5 stars hotels and these guys lived
The desk staff and bar staff treated you like old friends and knew your name.
Being slightly out of the main CBD areas means there is a bit of a walk to the shops but it also means the nights are a lot quieter.

Keep up the good work. I’ll be back!

This was my first visit to Sydney, and from the moment the concierge helped us from our taxi we felt welcomed and looked after at the Observatory.
WE were able to leave our bags for the day, until our room was ready, and use the wireless internet ( a little expensive, but reliable and good). Our room was just a standard room, but it was large and pleasant, with a huge comfortable bed, and a lovely little balcony so we could sit outside, and enjoy fresh air and sunshine ( between the showers!). We looked out over the observatory rather than the harbour, but it was still a nice view that didn't feel too boxed in - perfect for two country kiwis in the BIg City!
The Rocks is a lovely area of Sydney, with much character, and without the endless bustle of the CBD, and the observatory is very well located within wallking distance to many attractions, including the Circular quay ( which wasnt circular by the way!)
The staff at the hotel were always friendly, courteous and helpful, without the toffee nosed attitude that one can get at some high class hotels! WE really felt like individuals and welcome guests, rather than just a "room number"!
Only a few negative point - I would say that on the third floor, the water pressure is not great, so the huge opulent bath takes a long time to fill, and I didn't even attempt a shower! However, the facilities at the pool were great - lovely showers, and my hair loved the provided shampoo and conditioner! If you are using the pool though, there is no spinner to dry your swimming costume, and unfortunately our heated towel rail didn't work, so we had to fly home with wet things in our bag. I would suggest perhaps the hotel could invest in a costume spin dryer? Until then, check your heated towel rail, and give them time to fix it - we realised too late in the evening.
The other real surprise was that the coffee provided in the hotel room was INSTANT! As a kiwi, I haven't even SEEN instant coffee in over a year! I drank tea! The minibar as to be expected for a luxury hotel was very expensive, but there is a shop nearby where water, chocolate etc can be purchased for much less. There is also an excellent local fish restaurant Fish on the rocks very nearby. The hotel dinner menu is really far to fussy/fancy. as agreed with other guests! However the hotel breakfast is lovely! I suggest trying the continental buffet, as even my cooked breakfast addict partner found that was plenty for him, and we only had the cooked breakfast once ( delicious but not needed!)
Overall, I would like to thank the staff at the observatory for a lovely stay, and for making two kiwis so welcome. When we found the bustle of the city way to much, you were a perfect refuge for us, and we really enjoyed our stay. I only include the negative points as suggestions for further improvement!

I stayed here for two weeks. A lovely view of the harbour from my room and lovely service. The staff was awesome and friendly. Centrally located in Sydney CBD, there was easy access to most of the attractions of Sydney.

Room Tip: Go for harbour view - It's awesome

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights. It is in the Rocks area of Sydney about 10 minutes walk from Sydney Harbour bridge, so a very good location. The public areas, the pool and the rooms are of a very good standard. We had a junior suite and had requested a room (several weeks before) that was quiet and not next to a service area. We were allocated a suite right next door to a very noisy service area. After complaining we were moved a couple of days later to a quieter suite. The room was lovely with a very large bathroom which also had one of the best showers we have had. The reception staff and the duty manager were very helpful, as was the concierge.

We regularly stay at 5 star hotels and while we are there we always use the restaurant around three times. On our second night we decided to use the restaurant at this hotel. The concierge made a reservation for 6.30pm as we had been out walking all day. We arrived at the restaurant at 6.28pm to be met by the Restaurant Manager who was very grumpy. His first words were "we are not open yet - you are too early!!" He didn't say good evening, didn't offer to direct us to the bar with menus, just walked past us. We were tired and felt quite shocked about this rude approach. Being seasoned travellers we decided not to accept this treatment and took our business elsewhere. We spent 500 AUS dollars at Aria (wonderful views overlooking the harbour bridge and excellent cuisine). On three other nights we dined out and spent an average of 400 AUS dollars. Obviously this hotel can afford to let it's Restaurant Manager reduce the hotel's food and beverage income by 1700 dollars a week. I wonder if we were the only guests who took our business elsewhere? I think the hotel should calculate just how much they might be losing here!! The coffee at breakfast time was absolutely dreadful, which really is not on at a 5 star hotel. The breakfast manager told me that I should not have ordered filter but ordered one of the special coffees instead. The breakfast cost around 36 dollars (each) and the special coffees an extra 5. Is it too much to expect to be given a decent cup of coffee included in the breakfast? We only had breakfast once in the hotel and then took our business elsewhere, so that is another 430 dollars that they did not get. Luckily there are lots of cafes around serving lovely coffee! It was disappointing treatment from the restaurant and we are amazed that the Manager allows his Restaurant Manager to lose so much business. We spent two days working with our clients in Sydney and the people we spoke to there were very surprised by our treatment.
However, we would recommend the location, the reception staff, the concierge, room service, the pool and spa area and the quality of the rooms. We would just have felt happier with some civil service from the Restaurant Manager.

Room Tip: Never be early for your restaurant reservation!!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback and for your positive comments about our location, the quality of our rooms and the service offered to you by our reception and concierge staff.

I was however very concerned to read your remarks about your experience with our Restaurant Manager. We apologise if you experienced any rudeness whatsoever. Please be assured that your experience is certainly not representative of the usual service excellence at Galileo Restaurant which is considered one of the best restaurants in Sydney.

Regarding your mention of an additional charge for the coffee, there appears to have been some miscommunication on this occasion. In fact those guests who order the $36 dollar Continental or $45 Full breakfast receive their choice of coffee free of charge whether it is filtered coffee or a flat white/espresso etc. We apologise that this was not effectively communicated to you when you placed your order. At The Observatory Hotel we aim to exceed the expectations of all of our guests and it appears that we did not do so in your situation. For that I apologise.

We hope you choose to stay with us again when you next visit Sydney in which case do contact me directly so that I can personally look after you.

Yours sincerely

Ralf Bruegger
General Manager

We stayed at the Observatory for 3 wonderful nights while traveling in Australia. The room was large and beautifully appointed. This has to be one of the most beautiful hotels we have ever stayed at and the service could not have been better. They sent us on our way with good recommendations as we set out to explore, and offered us chilled bottles of water. The pool and spa is wonderful. Location is great, and although breakfast at the hotel is pricey, there are several great options just across the street or down the block. (Splendid Sandwich right next to the tennis courts across the street is wonderful!) They happily held our bags for us while we traveled up north for 6 days. Highly recommend the Observatory!
