“Better then expected”
Reviewed January 17, 2014 via mobile

We arrived very early about 9ish and got a free upgrade because our room wasn't ready and they were going to put us into a smoking room and we aren't smokers and got our room straight away. The staff at reception are friendly. There was a couple staff members that didn't know where the restaurants are located in the casino complex, which I thought was a bit disappointed since its meant to be a 5 star hotel. I wouldn't recommend the garden buffet. It was Over priced and the food wasn't really nice. The restaurants at darling harbour are cheaper and the food is much nicer, plus there helps of cheaper n nicer restaurants around. The astral tower was offering breakfast for $35 per person for a buffet (I would recommend to have breakfast somewhere else) lots of restaurants close by and can get a drink and food for around $10 to $20 depending where you go). The carpet was clean and newish but it was a bit dodgy where someones cut a square of carpet from a section of carpet from under the bed to cover up another section of carpet. Overall the place is nice and clean, close to the light rail which takes you to central station, paddys market and a few other places. The ferry warf and bus stops are all within walking distance and close to shops and restaurants and the aquarium.

We got an amazing deal on Wotif for a two bedroom apartment, which comprised of a king bed in one bedroom and a double bed in the other. There were two bathrooms, each with toilet, sink and shower, whilst the main bathroom had a bath. The kitchen is large and well equipped, and there's a washing machine and dryer next to it. The lounge is also big with a table and chairs suitable for 6-8 people.

Whilst the room was serviced daily the washing machine powder was not replenished (so you need to purchase your own if you are intending to stay for a longer period and do more washing - a Coles supermarket is located just across from one of the side entrances in Edward Street).

The gym is very modern (one of the best we have ever seen at a hotel) and the swimming pool is big enough for doing lengths, otherwise you can soak in one of the two spa pools.

The complex is huge, with various eating places, casino, and theatre within it.

It's only a 15 minute easy walk to downtown Sydney (George Street etc) and Darling Harbour, and even closer if you get a ferry.

It's very easy to get a taxi from the front as people are constantly coming and going in them.

The only gripe we had is that WIFI is not free (something you would expect from accommodation such as this - even the smallest of motels we stay at in New Zealand offer free WIFI!!).

The lines to check-in are very long (as mentioned by other reviewers), which is frustrating when you are tired and just want to get into your room a.s.a.p.!

Astral apartments are old and dated.
Stayed at The Darling last year. Miles better
Check in and out SLOW. Think 25 minutes.
Located near Jones Bay Wharf which is uber cool.
Valet service awesome.
Driving to Harbour Bridge is 3 mins north approximately and 4 mins south from Harbour Bridge.
Brilliant location.
15 minute walk to Sydney CBD.

2 bed serviced apartment was lovely. Very spacious, clean and well maintained. The housekeeping staff were superb.
Not so good was the fact that we had to have a room keys reprogrammed at least once a day during our three night stay.
Checking out was ridiculous! Over twenty minutes waiting with only two staff working and one young man fiddling around on a computer and avidly avoiding acknowledging the enormous queue of frustrated guests right under his nose.
Worst thing of all though was the fact that the credit card handed in as a bond was actually charged despite me making it abundantly clear that I did not want this card used to pay the bill. I was even refused a receipt by reception staff who told me that there was nothing to show as no charges had been made.
It then took a 45 minute conversation with hotel staff to get them to accept they had charged my card erroneously. Part of the money was refunded immediately, but I was told the rest would come to me once I had checked out. What actually happened was that they charged me again AFTER I had checked out and paid the outstanding balance. It took a long and very irate phone call to hotel management before they arranged for the money to be refunded to me (5 days after we checked in).
Lovely room and location, but reception staff are completely inept and unhelpful. I wouldn't rush to stay there again!

Great deal, very helpful and friendly staff, clean and well kept, awesome b/fast buffet, handy free valet parking, cannot get any closer to darling harbour and the newly renovated pools were awesome but....the 2 double beds killed us, we are a family of 4 with 2 teenage boys who shared a bed and the wife and i on the other bed, short sentence to summon the sleeping experience..canned sardines...though the beds and pillows were very comfy.

Room Tip: Pools, spa and gym are on level 5.

Stayed over Christmas for a couple of days in a star suite. On arrival we were meet by very friendly concierge staff who offered to store our bags while we checked in. But once we reached the lobby it was a mess the reception line was huge it took over 40 minutes to reach the front desk. On reaching the front we were met with a very less than welcoming staff. The young man on reception seemed like he didn't care and didn't want to be there he had a real attitude problem. I asked if I could speak with a manager as I really was not happy with waiting this long to check in. I was told they contact me. They never did. The room was very nice. Big TV's and the spa was great. blocked out windows was odd but had no view anyway. The room did have abit of dust and mould smell in the bathroom that the cleaners should do better in a hotel of this nature. The TV in the spa didn't work and the controller was missing - A handy man came by and fixed that. The room also didn't have a compendium which was strange as I thought you would cross promote the restaurants and bars in the casino. Had to call the operator for information they explained the different restaurants and bars but it was a real hassle. You really should have something in the rooms. We had dinner in Black and The Century both were very good and great service...And ive left the worst thing about this Hotel for last the wifi is a joke how can you charge for internet at $25 a day and provide such poor service and your business centre is hopeless. I ended up having to use the computer at the concierge desk as they seem like the only people who would help me. Overall I think the Management of this Hotel need a good kick along...

Room Tip: Spa Suites are very good maybe get a high floor.
