“Fantastic location and value for money!”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

We had difficulty finding a quality hotel for a reasonable price in Sydney and settled on the Sir Stamford for 4 adults and 2 kids for two nights in August 2013. We were pleasantly surprised! The location could not be better (very close to Circular Quay and the botanic gardens), the rooms were spacious and well fit out, the breakfast was excellent, and staff were friendly and very helpful. I have traveled a lot and I would say that the Sir Stamford was one of the better hotels I have stayed at. I would highly recommend it and would stay there again without a secound thought!

Dear Valued Family Guests
We thank you for your generous endorsement - Sir Stamford is very proud of the guests comments we get from such a wide range local, international, business, couples - especially five star families. Our location, when viewed on maps - or from satelitte photographs - clearly shows the advantages - from Harbour Bridge to Opera House, Ferries to Botanical Gardens. Spending quality time with loved ones creates memories to cherish - but it's also nice to know we were value for money in our category. Staying at Sir Stamford does save valuable time in being so accessible to the cities Circular Quay hub in a hotel that stands out from it's modern highrise competitors.
KInd regards

We wanted some where to spend the day we landed in sydney until the next day we boarded our cruises ship. this hotel was amazing we a family with yonger children loved the big room and the massive bathroom, we loved the bath. the room was large enough for all our suitcase and didn't feel small. we had a view of the gardens it was nice, my mum and dad had a view of the ship that was docked in port which was exciting for us to see. Service was amazing and very welcoming. we heard no noise and didn't really see many other people, it was a short stroll to Sydney's most famous sites. highly recommend.

Dear Happy Camperdown Family
Our rooms are very roomy and as your review emphasizes this does make it perfect for pre and post cruising as you can spread out all those cases that you can take on a cruise. Mixed family groups from all over the world choose Sir Stamford, but its nice to know we please Sydneysiders on their adventures. Our historic Heritage building was converted into a hotel by Ritz Carlton and their legacy provided the Stamford Group with spacious, gracious rooms layout rarely seen in modern hotels. It's definitely a slice of Colonial Australia in one of the cities most iconic streets.
Thank you for highghting our family friendliness.

This is a classic and charming boutique hotel located at a very central location in Sydney. It is within short walking distance from train station, ferry terminal, Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Garden, CBD and so on. It is perfect if you want a key starting point, but still in a fairly quiet street with the botanic garden right across. The staff is very friendly and service minded, the lobby very beautiful (with a fireplace) and the room was big. As the type of hotel indicates (boutique style), many of the features, ammenities and interior are old-fashioned, but fairly well maintained. You will feel comfortable and relaxed in a very charming atmosphere. Can absolutely be recommended.

Dear Valued Norweigan Guest
Your recommendation to other guests is much appreciated - and your review captures the hotels style - our lobby fire is a great attraction over the winter - but Spring is here and the temperature today is 25 degree and this weekend is forecast to reach 30 - sunbathing weather has arrived early. The pool deck location is the roof of our 1860's heritage building and shows the original Welsh slate tiles and does have views over other historic buildings in the area. The hotel is a magnificent starting point for many walks and adventures from walking over the Harbour Bridge to Kayaking on the harbour - thank you for highlighting our charm.
Kind regards

This was the first time I have stayed in such a fancy hotel as this, despite being well travelled - I'm usually the budget sort of traveller.

The first night we noticed the room was hot - I hadn't yet located and activated the temperature controls, my bad.

The next morning I made a priority out of locating the controls and switching on some cooling, this worked fine, but we woke up at 4am sweating again - the cooling had turned off at some point during the night and wouldn't turn back on. I went down to reception to ask for help but there is little they can do during the night so they said they would send maintenance to take a look the next day.

The room really was very hot, the sort where you had better sleep naked without any covers. Some people like heated rooms but I don't.

The cooling switched back on automatically at 6 in the morning (I know because I was awake!). They said they had fixed it the next day but, alas, it turned off again during the next night leaving us hot again.

My best guess is that there is timer on it to save electricity / the environment, but it is a shame they don't really know how it works.

I've spoken to the hotel and they do seem to be taking it seriously so that future guests are not affected. Apparently nobody else complained and I've only found one other review referring to the heat.

Everything else about the hotel is fine, and one other good point is that we accidentally left behind some toy cars in the room and they sent them to us at our next hotel free of charge.

They're really trying at this hotel but there are a few problems to fix. Thanks to them for sending the lost property, this bumped up the rating one notch.

Room Tip: Avoid room 212 in case they don't have the cooling problems fixed.

Dear Valued Perth Family

Thank you for your review and reporting your heating problems. Controlling the temperatures in each room is a feature of our hotel - as each room has it's own controls and we sincerely apologise that there was a issue with your individual room controls which our engineering team worked on - our rooms are definitely meant to be the temperature dialed on the thermostat in each room. We are always grateful for guests highlighting issues as the unit was working correctly when tested but as you have correctly reported it was linked to a timer which has been removed. Spring days have been hot but the evenings are still very cool - once again our
apologies.

Returning lost property which has been located - especially for favourite childrens items is a pleasure. The item most often found are phone re-chargers.

Kind regards

We stayed for 2 nights in a standard room.
Pros
Lovely intimate , boutique feel.
Gorgeous furnishings, open fire, felt like staying in an opulent private home
Although the hotel was almost fully booked - we rarely saw another guest.
Nice views of Circular Quay from our top floor room
Big room with entrance, dressing room area.
Big bathroom
Traditional decor
$35 per night for parking - very reasonable for this area
Cons
Bed a little hard for me - but still slept well
A very good choice for the area - highly recommended :)

Dear Valued Top Australian Contributor

To be highly recommended by a well seasoned traveller is high praise indeed. Your observation about not seeing another guest is very astute as our mix of guests, between business and leisure is very even and there are rarely groups or tours, just small parties travelling together. There are just 12 or so rooms per floor and these are well laid out facing 3 different road frontages as we are loacted on the corner of Macquarie and Albert Streets. Thank you for choosing to stay with Sir Stamford and please return again soon - the Naval Fleet Review in early October is going to be a spectacular event for a series of days on the harbour - culminating in a fireworks display on the 5th.

Kind regards

Perfect location, particularly to attend an Opera House concert; beautifully situated opposite the Royal Botanical gardens, easy walking access to all Sydney CBD's main attractions and shopping centres.(The Rocks, Circular Quay, Queen Victoria arcade, Westfield, David Jones, etc)
Stylistically, the hotels public rooms are like stepping back in time e.g. the beautiful and very spacious lounge with real log fires and presided over by the hotel's mascot, a wombat - a very cute touch.Highly recommend the bar for either drinks or meal or both - very comfortable armchairs to really relax and enjoy the surroundings and let your imagination roam.
The rooms are spacious and beds very comfortable with a lovely bathroom.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. Buffet breakfast winter special for $1 was very good, though the omelette, made to order, was disappointing - I suspect it had been cooked in an omelette maker, rather than in a suitable frypan and certainly the eggs had not been sufficiently beaten as the texture was dense and dry. Service was very good and this creates an attractive atmosphere - happy guests sharing chatty conversations with each other. Internet is available but is ridiculously expensive so did not use.

Dear Valued Senior Sydney Contributors

Walking to the Opera House for a concert, the gardens for a spring walk and Queen Victoria Building for a shop, sounds like the perfect Spring Break for a group of friends. Many thanks for your comprehensive review which so accurately describes the hotel's facilities and ambiance - "Gracious" is such a lovely word. Morris our Lobby Wombat takes his ambassador role very seriously and provides such a good service we've had to provide some assorted sized cousins that guests can purchase to take home! No omlelette maker in our kitchen, just our chefs - so will have to make apologies for your disappointment.

we also do love to hear good conversation and happy guests, so please return again soon.

Very pleased to read your vote of condidence after your first stay with us. We love to hear about our guests travels and share their passions for excellence and the exceptional. With just 105 rooms and suites we are the perfect sized hotel to be personal but provide privacy in our generously sized rooms.Spring is proving spectacularly pleasant with our open fires almost not required - the Royal Botanical Gardens are about to bloom with temperatures in the mid 20's daily.
