Sydney has lots of slick, comfortable hotels but it's hard to think of a better one than this. While it's modern and architecturally undistinguished, the Park Hyatt occupies a terrific spot, overlooking Circular Quay from the quiet southern end, with the Harbour Bridge impressively towering above. The whole of central Sydney is within more or less a half hour's easy and pleasant walk. The hotel is adjacent to the Rocks, Sydney's oldest and charming if inevitably touristy precinct, with its waterside restaurants backed by old stone warehouses and less famous drawcards, notably the delightful early colonial Observatory, Garrison Church and Lord Nelson pub. It's also only a few minutes walk from the Sydney Theatre Company's two waterside venues.
Our 'king' room overlooking Circular Quay was spacious and comfortable (and very reasonably priced for the corporate rate we were fortunate to be paying). It had the most enormous bed we've ever encountered - what's the next one up from 'king'? 'Emperor'? Equally vast tv. Good wi-fi and fantastic bathroom with great shower. A teapot was a nice and surprisingly unusual touch. Service couldn't have been more friendly.
Only brick-bats: $40 for one night's garaging seemed a bit steep. We thought the high tech variant on curtains was noisy, laborious and unnecessary. And though we requested the 'Sunday Telegraph' we got the 'Sun Herald'. But overall recommended.
