“Comfortable, quiet luxury in a great location”
Reviewed June 3, 2011

I was only in Sydney for 3 days so wanted a luxury hotel in a convenient location. Just minutes away from the hotel is the Opera House, the wharf, view of Harbour Bridge, The Rocks, etc. It's a great location.

Across the street from the hotel is a food court with very reasonably priced food, a supermarket, etc. Couldn't be more convenient. Taxi from airport to hotel was about $40 AUD.

My room was well appointed with a phenominal view of the Botannical Gardens. i could have slept without window shades if I wanted to as there was nothing blocking my view. It was one of the quietest hotel rooms I have stayed in.

However, for a 5 star, I was disappointed by the mattress as it was sagging on one side of the bed (the side closest to the bathroom). The internet connection was a bit slow too making the use of Skypes a bit of a challenge. The fee for internet was $25/day and wireless is not offered in the room. Telephone calls (local or otherwise) from the room were very expensive.

Room Tip: Higher floor. View of Gardens was great.

LOCATION: A taxi from the airport to the hotel costs around 35 AUD. Centrally located, only a three minute walk to Circular Quay and Sydney Opera House.
HOTEL: The room was small, albeit bright and clean. Check-in was very slow, chaotic and amateurish. An extremely busy period perhaps? It was painful to witness how badly the check-in staff copes in stressful situations. A simple apology for the delay from the staff would suffice, but none was offered.
CONCLUSION: Running a hotel is hard I am quite sure. A simple three star hotel can get top ratings by reviewers, while a five star hotel only receives mediocre reviews. The check-in does not have to be extremely efficient. The location does not have to be perfect. The room does not have to be brand new as long as it is clean and bright. All imperfections can be overlooked and forgiven as long as the staff is apologetic and polite. Politeness is the key here. InterContinental Sydney is a good hotel. The location is excellent. The room is functional and clean. What it lacks is the staff excellence of a welcoming hotel.

The Intercontiental is everthing you expect it to be. The room was fabulous with a view of the Botanical Gardens and Opera House. The location is great, and all of the staff was friendly. The bed was extremely comfortable! I would definitely go back. The only complaint was that there was a charge for internet access.

As a business traveler I find that most 4-5 star hotel rooms in major cities are pretty good, so am often swayed by other features of the hotel. I booked the intercontinental purely based on proximity to my office. The room was lovely with a pretty good view and all of the amenities were comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. Not outstanding given the price and rating, but certainly nothing to complain about. My only peeve (and this is a personal thing) was the shower over bath and shower curtain arrangement. I just dislike shower curtains..........
The gym is something that is often basic in hotels and the Intercontinental certainly shined here. Plenty of equipment, plenty of space and plenty of variety, easily the best (non-resort) hotel gym I've used in a while. It is a differentiator that will likely see me back.
My only other complaint is reasonably priced meals can be tricky to find (particularly late) in that part of Sydney, the Intercontinental is in a bit of a quiet spot, not quite in the Rocks and too far from Chinatown or Darling Harbour to walk.

I have stayed at the IC twice this year and won't be returning until they upgrade the beds and reburbish. I can see other reviewers have expressed similiar comments.

The bed was dreadful on our last stay and was certainly not any better this time around. The extra mattress topper we requested made little difference. These beds are NOT plush. If you want a comfortable bed, your best bet is to stay at the Sheraton or Westin. The bathrooms are also quite shabby and small.

On a positive note, the service in the club lounge was an improvement. The staff were somewhat friendlier and far more welcoming this time around.

Read the mixed reviews after having booked the IC. The rooms may not have been the most modern, but they were pleasant, cosy and very inviting and the shower was lovely. The service was excellent from start to finish and the communal parts of the building itself (dining room, bar etc.) were beautiful. I honestly had no complaints at all, thought the food (had room service, and food from the bar) was nothing special and if it wasn't for the cold, I would certainly have ventured out somewhere else. That said, I wished I'd discovered the Cortile Bar whilst I was still living in Sydney - it was a perfect, surprisingly intimate, place to catch up with friends on a Friday night.

The location is fantastic for visitors who are in Sydney for 2-3 days - it's within walking distance to the opera house (you can get there early and beat the crowd), rocks (for breakfast) and the ferry terminal (make a trip out to Watson Bay, stroll along the cliff then finish off with a fish and chip lunch). It's a nice stroll to the CBD or the park as well.

The room was quiet and clean, the bed was v. comfortable. The service was discrete and efficient.

We haven't stayed in many Sydney hotels (compared to Perth/Melbourne) but the standard of service was higher.
