Excellent location for anything around Circular Quay. Easy walk to the Opera House. Hundreds of restaurants around. Room quiet and comfortable; well appointed. Staff laid back but friendly and efficient.

You really can't fault the location of Harbour Rocks Hotel. 2 minute stroll to Circular Quay & all that it has to offer but then, I've got to say, after that it was all a bit disappointing. The Heritage rooms are tiny with a prison cell decor & unfortunately for us, a view of the room opposite. Having to recover our bags from the store room (because our room wasn't ready when we checked in) & then cart them up the stairs ourselves, stained carpets, broken security latch on the door & a mini bar that was never re-stocked added to the feeling that we had been mislead by the website offering the hotel as an "exclusive home away from home for discerning travellers."
All my other fellow reviewers are quite correct - no wifi or breakfast included in a room rate of £450 per night over the new year period is pretty shocking.
If you have a car then you have to pay for parking at the underground car park opposite which is fair enough given the area of the city you are stopping in where space is at a premium.
Don't be fooled into thinking Erics Bar is anything special - you basically have a drink in reception. I'm sure Scarlett restaurant is very nice but we felt that we really didn't want to give them any more of our money and besides there are numerous restaurants in The Rocks for you to choose from.
The staff are courteous & helpful as you would expect.
We were fully aware that stopping in The Rocks over the New Years holiday was going to be expensive & we would have to pay for the privilege but we felt that The Harbour Rocks didn't deliver on its promise. We stopped in many places during a month in Australia & felt The Harbour Rocks was the least value for money.

We stayed here for my husbands birthday and we're very generously upgraded to a larger room and given a complementary bottle of wine in our room which was a lovely surprise. The service was excellent - so polite but welcoming and helpful.
I have though given 4/5 as I was shocked, the same as other guests, at the very expensive charge for the internet - this was the most we paid anywhere in the whole of Australia - in the most expensive hotel! The fact that you can get it for free at the opera house is crazy!
Also the fact that breakfast wasn't included in the room rate I think is a little bad. We knew this in advance and had a lovely breakfast in a nearby cafe but for over $300 for a room I can't believe its extra - we stayed in hostels throughout Oz where we payed $40 pp per night and got free breakfast...and free internet!
But...on the positive side the hotel is in a fantastic location...some lovely cafes, bars and restaurants near by and only a 5min walk to the harbour.
I would consider staying again but really would urge them to reconsider the charge for wifi and breakfast.

At this price I would hope it would good. The score reflects my disappointment against expectations.

Has potential - must try harder. Rooms ok, airless (the window doesn’t open) and the bathroom is tired. The common areas are soulless with a random collection of books left behind on book shelves: more backpacker that curated boutique.

The thing that got us, was on asking for the wireless password, we were informed we had to pay. What! This is 2014 and the Room in north of $350. Wireless is a utility and I no more expect to pay for it in a smart hotel that I expect to put coins in a meter to heat the shower. This is mean and not conducive to a friendly, contented guest. I also understand the fee is not for minutes of usage but the time you make the service available.

It hints and a hotel chain run by accountants not hoteliers.

This tallied with the breakfast offer: online they offered this when booking online at $40. At reception they are offering it at a 30% off offer on a tacky sign. Went to look at it today and was glad we decided against it - was distinctly average. Go to the Fine Dining Cafe round the corner - character, great food and a sensible price.

Staff all nice, but again that is expected. Corporate culture wasn’t.

Sort this out. Not impressive guys.

great location, rooms are small and our had no view but the price seemed reasonable for the location. Not as luxurious as they would like you to think, in fact not luxurious at all.
But why do they charge 24$ for wifi Internet? Most places in new Zealand offer free internet and charge a great deal less for the rooms.
It is time the bog chains stopped charging for something that today is a basic necessity and which costs them virtually nothing.
I think we should start boycotting hotels that charge for wifi.

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking out of the hotel.

Very welcoming staff who couldn't have been more helpful. Recommend you take the breakfast offer available on the day you check in, 30% discount making it 25 dollars for a really good breakfast. Rooms are very comfortable if slightly on the small side. Ours had a view across the harbour to the Opera House. There are other options for breakfast like a French style patisserie just around the corner. Several restaurants nearby but being in the main tourist area they tend to be expensive. The one we enjoyed the most is The Vintage Cafe, on Nurses Walk just behind the hotel. Portuguese/Spanish tapas style, food and drink all at reasonable prices. It does breakfast and lunch everyday, dinner Thursday to Sunday, when a Brazilian singer/guitarists performs in the style of Jao Gilberto. The hotel is within easy reach of several of Sydney's main attractions. We used the Airbus express for transfers between the airport and hotel, at 64 Australian dollars return for the two of us very good value. Will take to and pick up from the hotel. There is a concierge desk in the arrivals hall at the airport where you can buy tickets.
