To advertise this as 3* must be in breach of the Trades Description Act.The Reception area was musty and actually smelt.Pity the Staff who had to work under those conditions,it didn't end there. The carpets were congealed with years of grease and dirt, the corridor walls and rooms hadn't seen a lick of paint in a decade. The rooms were just as bad,one of the drawers was full of rubbish, including a used syringe.I complained to the reception staff about it and straight away he removed the syringe, but guess what.......he left the other rubbish. The whole Hotel was grubby and downtrodden, there was no way we would have breakfast there. The only reason that I have given it a fair review is the location.Just down the hill and past Harry's are the Botanical gardens.Through the gardens and your on to the Opera House. The return journey from Central Quay was just as easy, one change and you are in Kings Cross Station, which is just 5 minutes from the Hotel.Interestingly, this isn't a cheap Hotel, which makes it more galling

Room Tip: I can't really recommend

I've stayed twice for a total of 4 weeks. It's an older building with budget rates, but rooms are well-maintained & beds are comfortable. Both my rooms had kitchenettes, irons + ironing boards, flat-screen TVs. There are coin-operated washer-dryers on the 4th floor, a breakfast buffet on the 5th. The staff is polite & helpful. There are computers & WiFi in the lobby, a local bus stop outside the entrance & an international ATM a few steps away. There are nearby restaurants & a boutique grocery store across the street. Kings Cross subway station is a 10-min. walk, the Jewish Museum a 15-min. walk & chic Oxford Street a 20-min. walk from the hotel. If you're a bargain hunter, there are 2 Vinnie's (St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores) on opposite ends of Oxford Street. My only complaints: No exercise room, spotty WiFi in rooms and no restroom off the lobby.

I stayed here for $60 for a single room, it reminded me of what I've seen on tv of prison cells , no room at all to swing a cat but for the cost what more did I expect, it's as simple as this, if you want somewhere to sleep that's pretty central to kings cross and cheap this is what your looking for, if you need anything else then spend some more money

I stayed here for 10 nights in early August and it was what I expected for the price.
Perfectly respectable, well run hotel with friendly receptionists.

The reason for 3 stars was the following:-

Internet access - considering the hotel isn't as cheap as some of the hostels I've stayed in... and the fact that we're in 2013... the fact they charge $4 for an hour of internet is utterly outrageous. And the PC's are so slow you spend 10 minutes of your entitlement sat twiddling your thumbs. Like I say, I've stayed in mega cheap hostels and they've offered unlimited free access to Apple Mac's AND internet whenever you need it.

Rooms - the size of them is fine but they are a little bit dated. TV mounted so high on the wall that when in bed you can barely see it and very limited channels.

That said, everything else was fine and it is well located in Sydney with a short 15 minute bus trip to the main circular quay area.

If I go back to Sydney however I think I will chose a hostel.

Room Tip: I had the 'superior single' Not sure what was superior about it.. quite small and the '...

if you book through trivago you can get a room for around $79 which is about as good as it gets for Sydney.
The rooms are small, a bit worn but everything works as it should. The laundry is useful. Breakfast if $13 for a buffet. So scoff a lot and you don't need lunch!
I've stayed there 3 times now and would have been there tonight except i screwed a booking up and they were booked out. Now in Bondi shores hotel which is the polar opposite.

Amazing place, staff are good and know their stuff, rooms are always clean and tidy, location really not bad at all, a short walk to the actual Cross.
Have stayed here many times over the years.
Would not hesitate to recommend it to travellers looking for good quality rooms. Location, ambience and affordability.

Room Tip: stay on the cross side, better air flow there, a bit noisier but worth it for the sights and sounds.

I was very disappointed overall. I arranged two rooms for myself and my 4 friends for a night out in the cross.
Arrived to a smelly/ musty and ex smokey outdated building.
Annoying stairs to negotiate despite using the lifts.
Arrived to the rooms which were old but appeared clean. Considering what was paid for both rooms $718 it was expensive for the quality. My tv didn't work but I didn't really care about that.
As I jumped into bed after my night out I found multiple pubic hairs on my pillow, then located the other pillow on the bed found more public hairs under that pillow. So disgusting. I was embarrassed for my friends. Won't be returning.
