“Basic good value for Sydney”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

This is an old hotel which has quirky arrangements and stairs everywhere. But the good news is they carry your luggage for you. The rooms (superior queen) are modernized with good bed and shower. The area is safe with good restaurants near. It is far from many tourist attractions but buses and trains are near. I found the room very clean but do not like the envelop style duvet cover being used without a top sheet. Walk to King's Crossing for breakfast instead of taking the over priced breakfast at the hotel. With a $10 breakfast at the outdoor cafe you get free wifi for your iPad instead of the hotel's $4 per hour.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room and you may get a Harbour view.

Nice hotel with clean comfortable rooms unfortunately our excitement of scoring a room over a small dead end street (Crick St) which we thought would be quiet, were shattered. All night this was the starting line for the revheads and hoons to compere their engines :( at one stage there was 5 cars with bonnets up and music blaring, with many blokes/ kids crowding round to check who had the largest!
No sleep was had until dawn and maybe an hour or so later the rubbish truck came to empty the large industrial bins of bottles from the restaurants down stairs.
If you are planning on staying here ask for a room away from any streets!

Room Tip: Maybe choose one with no windows! As this is a VERY noisy area.

We were shocked to find out on check in that wifi is charged at 4 dollars an hour and the hotel staff told us this is common sense! Maybe just in OZ!
On checking out, we were once again surprised by the extra cost for the breakfast at 13 dollars per person per day! No one mentioned breakfast isnt include! Once again the receptionist said this is common knowledge with a blank expression on her face! She must be getting really good at crisis handling!
Our verdict: a very average hotel with a seemingly average price. But be careful, other than the room anything else is chargeable at a premium rate with "common sense".
Last not the least, be prepared to face some lifeless zombie like staff.

My brother and I stayed at the Devere Hotel on Friday night while we were in Sydney to see a show. This budget hotel is conveniently located in Kings Cross a few minutes walk away from the train station and plenty of cafes, eateries, bars and other entertainment options.

I booked a twin and we were upgraded to a triple on arrival. Although the room was pretty basic, it was clean and the beds were comfortable. The room was quiet and had A/C. Although I was not keen on the shower over bath, the towels were soft and fluffy and the bathroom was clean. If you want to watch in-house DVDs, there is a pretty decent selection for free with a $20 deposit.

Check in and out were quick and efficient and we had a full buffet breakfast that was OK. We paid $13 ea (half price) for the breakfast because we paid a little more for the room.

Booked a room last minute over a long weekend so ended up paying $225 for a twin room. After paying this price I expected a pretty nice hotel but from the moment I walked into the foyer I was dissapointed. The hotel is very outdated and my room was no exception. There was a dead cockroach on the floor in my bathroom and the TV reception was shotty. If I'd paid much less for the room then I would be happier because it was a basic room and I did sleep well, but for the price I paid it was a rip off. Awesome location though less than a 5 min walk from Kings Cross station surrounded by restaraunts. I stayed on a Saturday night and was worried it would be noisy from the partiers in the Cross but the Potts Point end where the hotel is is very quiet.

Whilst the location was great with fab restaurant across the road (Fratelli Fresh - highly recommended) the hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade Being an old building it would be very costly but we found the bathroom too small with a clinging shower curtain over the bath.
Cost was NZ$275/2 nights for a superior twin which I think was too much for what we got. However it was clean and tidy with plenty of coffee and tea facilities.
I stayed here 6 years ago in a twin standard room and felt it was better than this one.
Lovely friendly staff and no doubt will go back despite the complaints!!.

With a bus stop right outside the door, a Woolies Supermarket across the road & a railway station (Kings Cross) a short walk away, you couldn't find a more convenient location for a short stay (4 nights) in central Sydney. The staff were also extremely helpful. The downside was that the room we had (135), was very noisy as it was on the Crick Ave side of the hotel, where rubbish trucks came & went servicing the many apartments opposite. The television & radio reception were also very poor in this room.

Room Tip: A Higher floor room away from Crick Avenue would be quieter.
