A bit pricey, but this hotel was top-of-the-line. I had no doubts I was staying in one of the best hotels in Sydney. Room was clean and spacious. Bathroom was superb. Staff was extremely professional and helpful without being intrusive.

Located in The Rocks, near plenty of fine dining, shopping, and sights.

We loved our stay at the Shangri-la Hotel Sydney. We had an amazing view of the harbor bridge and the Sydney Opera House. It was especially beautiful at sunset. The staff was great and helpful and the location was perfect, being right near the Rocks area. Our room was on the 25th floor and was expensive, but worth the price.

Room Tip: Harbor view, high floor!!!

Stayed on 30th floor, view was amazing. Used the Horizon Club facilities. All staff were amazing and service impeccable. Hotel very obliging and accommodating allowing us early check in and late departure.

If you ever get a chance to stay at this Hotel, ensure you stay in a Premier Grand Harbour View Room. The views are amazing and the size of the room is like a mini suite. It is an easy stroll to The Rocks for dinner or a drink.

Taking my wife to Sydney for both her anniversary and birthday I thought what better hotel than the Shangri-La Sydney. We had done the same a few years back to the Shangri-La Bangkok and were both just so amazed at the high quality of the hotel, the views of the river, the terrific food, wonderful Horizon Club and very accomplished staff.

So we splurged a bit for a Harbor and Opera House view room and the Horizon Club access at Sydney. Quite a disappointment all around. Our "opera house and harbor" view room turned out to be on a corner of the building such that the only view you got was by sitting in the window and craning your neck to the edge to see the opera house. Not very impressive. I find the half truth worse than the lie and it really irks me to have paid the up charge and not get what I thought I paid for. So if you want a harbor and opera house view do not take room 3419. It disappoints.

I guess the first clue for us was that not one of the door staff came to help us with getting our bags out of the taxi or helping us with them to elevator and the room. Not 5 star service. However we did get a split of champagne and some chocolate gratis from the management for our occasion so were things looking up? No.

Another thing that at a 3 star hotel you would not expect but at 5 star prices you do are small things like fresh flowers or a bowl of fruit, a welcome card or something upon check in. Here you get nothing. The room had no special touches what so ever...no turn down service, mint on the pillow.... Very much not the Bangkok experience.

We apparently got to the hotel too late for any breakfast and too early for any lunch. The Horizon Club had an impressive spread of nothing. We tried again around cocktail time and found little left to eat. Another disappointment.

Over the course of our three nights at the hotel we had malfunctioning room keys four times, they lost my shoes I sent to be shined in spite of three calls to them about it, (forcing me to go to dinner at a high end restaurant in yellow running shoes), a bathroom scale stuck at 40kg, and one of the poorest quality breakfast buffets I can remember having at a supposed 5 star hotel.

The food was poorly prepared and there was little selection. I doubt they could cram in another table but they clearly were trying to. I felt like I was eating next to a busy road with guests and staff zooming by our table in a constant flow. Stay away from any tables at the entrance to the Mix restaurant. We had the dubious honor of sitting next to the kitchen staff having their breakfast out with the guests. That I found astounding. It was the prime breakfast time yet an entire table for 6 was occupied by cooks eating.

Generally the room was clean but really in need of an update. The 1990's style shower enclosure seemed taken from a trailer home and with a buildup of scale around the edges. I could go on with more of these seemingly minor irritants but they just kept happening. On their own they were not important but taken together it really ruined our experience. I suppose the demand for this property is such that they do not care if you come back or not. They will always be busy. It's unfortunate and I really changed my perspective on Shangri-la as a hotel chain. There is massive inconsistency across their locations. A very disappointed ex-Shangrila fan.

Dear charles c,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about our hotel. We are sorry to hear your disappointment with your stay. On our website, our Deluxe Opera House City View rooms are described as having partial views of the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay. For optimal views, we highly recommend our Executive and Deluxe Grand Harbour View rooms which showcase full views of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay. We have communicated your other concerns with the respective departments and rest assured, we are taking corrective action. We hope you will grant us another opportunity to delight you. For future stays, please contact me directly via arpad.romandy@shangri-la.com.

Best regards,

We booked this hotel based on its location and price online. We had a one night stop over and upon arrival was advised they had given us a free upgrade. Our room was outstanding with Habour views and a huge room. This was a piece of luxury that was well received after a busy week of travelling from several cities.

A very good experience all round. Room was ready well ahead of official check in time which was greatly appreciated. Very comfortable bed and quiet location. Spectacular view over the harbour and Opera House.

Horizon level is definitely the way to go - Horizon lounge on 30th floor offers lots of amenities. Particularly enjoyed cocktail hour - great choice of canapés (sushi really good). That, and a couple of drinks while watching the sun set over the harbour was pretty nice.

Only minor grumble was regarding afternoon tea service which is offered in the lounge. When we arrived the locusts had already been and there was nothing much left. We had to hunt to find cups and saucers - shame it hadn't been replenished before official wind up time, but it wasn't a big deal really when we consider all the pluses.

Also, complimentary continental breakfast is offered in the lounge or if you prefer there is access to a very good and extensive breakfast buffet on the 1st floor.

Overall it was an excellent stay with professional, friendly staff. Kudos to Colin the concierge who directed us to several areas of town we probably would have missed otherwise. A great start to our vacation.
