Really enjoyed my stay here. Rooms big and well appointed. Check in was efficient. Had harbour view room which had great views over the bridge and opera house. Breakfast was excellent. Would definitely stay again and would recommend.

The forecourt and reception are not as impressive as some other hotels in Sydney. Upon our arrival we were greeted by people opening car doors, taking our luggage from the car boot, addressing us by name and even showing us to reception. We thought that we were in for typical Asian Shangri-La service. We had booked a room with a harbour view and were told on arrival that one was available immediately on the 4th floor with a harbour and opera house view, we asked to see it. Well yes, we could see some water in Circular Quay! There was an identical room on the 15th floor that would be available later, we elected to wait for that, which had exactly the view that we had anticipated and thought that we had booked. We could not fault the room or its fittings, all one expects from Shangri-La. Thereafter we had no other contact with any member of staff except being woken at 8.40 in the morning to be asked if we wanted the room cleaned and then on another day, upon returning from a day out and appreciating the view asked if we wanted a "turn down" service at 6.30, having agreed, we did not realise that it involved closing the curtains and plunging the room into darkness! Overall this hotel is one for commercial visitors and business meetings and lacks the "Shangri-La Brand" experience that we have enjoyed at other of the group venues in Australia and particularly Asia.

Bed was soft and uncomfortable luckily only stayed one night! Staff were not interested and quite honestly we were shocked after staying at the Hong Kong Kowloon sister hotel, could be a different chain.

This is a nice hotel in the Rocks area and is only a 10 minute walk to Circular Quay where all the ferries depart from although it is up a short steep hill. We had a harbour view where we had a superb view of the opera house and bridge and as we were on the 25th floor we didnt really feel we had to pay a large sum of money to climb the bridge for the views as we were almost as high. We had a standard room which was a decent size with a bath and a shower. We didnt have breakfast included in the price and we found the breakfast, dinner and drinks prices to be very expensive (as through all of Australia) though we are from the uk and the exchange rate is particularly bad at the moment. Beer is £6-£8 for less than a pint and a small glass of wine was the same price. Overall this is a nice hotel, mainly recommended for its views and situation but we stayed in the Bangkok Shangri-la 2 days before and that was far superior. There was free internet/computer use.

Room Tip: Opera House or Harbour View

Having had a very disappointing stay at the Sydney Four Seasons a couple of weeks beforehand I was not quite sure what to expect from the Shangri-La, however it was a much better experience.

Check-in was quick an courteous - rooms were large and with a great view (and much cheaper than tiny rooms at four seasons!) and also very quiet - we had a grand harbour view room. Beds were very comfortable and bathroom was large, clean and luxuriously furnished.

The only negative point was the service at the bar on the top floor - I went up for a nightcap and was blanked by at least 3 members of staff as I stood waiting at the door for a table - eventually I had to ask one if I was really invisible! The staff in the bar were some of the rudest and most arrogant people I have ever met and certainly should not be working in the 'hospitality' business..

However, as long as you do not go to the bar the hotel is very good and I would certainly recommend it.
