Yes, bugs. Those little tiny creatures that usually accompany a lack of cleanliness. Leftover food particles are often the culprit. They could be spoted in the bathroom and on the desk.
Otherwise, this was a nice enough hotel (in case you are still considering it). The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The hotel appears to have been redone in the not-too-distant past, so decor is relatively current.
The room is not set out very well, though. Its walls are completely bare, the desk and one (not very comfortable) chair are not within view of the television.
The bed is quite comfortable, as are the pillows.
The location is quite good: a grocery store is one block away, and both Oxford and Crown streets are 2-3 blocks away (good shopping - independent design district). You can walk to Central Station (although the walk from it to the hotel is a bit cumbersome with bags - all uphill). The Museum Station (city rail) is about a 5 minute walk, as is the central city (several shopping arcades/malls, as well as city sights).
If they solve the bug problem, this would be a good enough hotel. I would still not pay full price, though - check for last minute deals.

Thank you for the feedback.

In every instance guest feedback is important to us. The hotel has just recently completed a multimillion dollar refurbishments that included new furniture, bedding, carpets etc.

We investigate all feedback as we take guest satisfaction extremely serioulsy.

Our Assistant Managers keep quite a detailed log of guest complaints/feedback. I have looked at the last five weeks of Managers log, however i cannot find any referene to bugs.

It would help us greatly if you could more details so I can investigate fully.

All our hotel has opening windows and often this can be the cause the bugs flying in.

We pride ourselves on our cleanliness and have a very high guest satisfaction rate as well as high guest returns.

We also have a very stringent program of pest control, with pest inspection undertaken by an external professional pest control company.

As mentioned above, we pride ourselves in guest satisfaction and on this occassion it appears we did not live up to your expectations.

I have emailed you my details through Tripadvisor and look forward to hearing from you.

We wanted somewhere interesting, out of the CBD and as far as location goes it was ok albeit the "wrong" end of Crown Street, still felt safe and it was a comfortable walk to Crown Street restaurants as well as the CBD. The staff were ok, no one and nothing stood out one way or the other. The restaurant food however stood out for being very unappetising. BLT was dried out and inedible, French Onion soup like dish water with cold dried out cheese on toast. Twice housekeeping staff walked into the room after a very short knock, it could have been embarrassing but luckily it wasn't. When I rang the day after check out realising i'd left a special pillow behind, I was told that housekeeping didn't have it.I know I left it on the bed, very disappointed. I won't be back.

It was pleasing to hear that you liked the location of our hotel, many guests find it handy to the City, but we are sorry to hear that our restaurant and Housekeeping service did not meet your expectation.

I am please to let you know that the issues you experienced should not be a problem now. Firstly, a new housekeeping company has contracted to provide an improved service, and so far the feedback we have received have been positive; secondly a new modern Italian restaurant and a new bar will be opening in Mid-November this year on our ground floor replacing the old facilities. Additional to this, a new 5-star apartment hotel will added to our accommodation choices, just next door, late this year.

We are not stopping our efforts to improve our standard of service and hospitality. I hope that this isolated occasion will not deter you from staying with us again.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Cambridge Hotel in the future.

I've stayed at Cambridge Hotel on many occasions, mainly due to the convenient location, right next to Oxford St and a 15min walk into town. The rooms are bit hit and miss in terms of quality and size, but generally clean. Not all rooms are necessarily the quietest for sleeping. It's good for business travellers if you don't have such high expectations.

this is our second stay, but this time with teenage girls, so we had the one bedroom unit. To our delight both TV and airconditioning unit in both rooms.
Staff were very freindly and eager to help.
For me, the biggest plus was the balcony, as i smoke and suffer claustrophobia.
Down side, the pool and spa was only just tepid, certainly not warm enough to enjoy.
We will definately stay again.

Friends recommended this hotel on the edge of the city centre.
Such a good handy location - sort of boutique style hotel but with all comforts.
Rooms have been renovated and the staff are so helpful.
Good meals in the resaurant .
A must to recommend !

Booked two nights, had not stayed here previously but familiar with the vicinity. From start to finish, service super friendly and helpful, room inexpensive but great. Location is just around corner from Oxford Street where you are never stuck for a great meal and a social atmosphere, and within minutes from everywhere else. Will stay there again.
