“Pungent odour”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013

I stayed in room 811 on Friday February 8, 2013. Brilliant location- opposite the Entertainment Center- wonderful for concerts (I was seeing Barry Gibb in concert).
Arrived at 3-45pm- staff wonderful. Alas, after alighting at the 8th floor- my breath was taken aback by the severe pungent musty smell- which didn't improve after I entered my room. The smell took my breath away. The smell was so bad that it gave me a sore throat. Holiday Inn- the smell is serious- you need to air your floors and eliminate the smell. I'm a Sydney resident, but next time I stay over night in the city, I won't be staying at the Holiday Inn (opposite the Entertainment Center).Room and bed were great. Holiday inn- lift your game. I have stayed with Holiday Inn in other parts of the world- and there has never been a problem. Shame about Sydney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shared a triple room and we had lots of space for three adults and luggage. The room was very clean and beds very comfortable (including the fold away). Checkin was efficient and friendly, check out took a little longer due to clerk having difficulty with my credit card (I was going to use a different card than I used on check-in), but nothing major and we got it sorted out. All the staff we delt with were friendly and professional. The location is great for visiting Darling Harbour and Paddy's Market, also close to good shopping and restaurants. Close to transportation, including the monorail and the hop on hop off sightseeing bus. I would stay here again.

I arrived early in the morning after an international flight. Early access to a room was not possible, but the hotel let me use the small gym to change and shower -- although it was a little cramped and awkward to do so. I stayed four nights while attending a conference at the Sydney Convention Center, a five-to-ten minute walk away in nearby Darling Harbour, a hub of restaurants and bars. The internet package was unusual: fast, but only for the first 400Mb, and then the drops down to "very slow" unless you pay 10c/Mb (i.e. around double the cost of the first 400Mb) -- I found I hit this limit very quickly while working from my room. The majority of the guests appeared to be holidaymakers and tour groups, some taking advantage of the very close proximity to the Chinatown area. The room was a little worn in places. The small lobby has a vending machine for charging phones. The hotel has coin-operated self-laundry facilities. Other than for the convention center, I found the Holiday Inn in Old Sydney more convenient for travel and sightseeing.

The strength of this hotel lies with its attentive, customer focused staff.

I found the staff responsive, positive and open to finding solutions for the business traveller.

I love the location - in the heart of Chinatown.

Breakfast buffet was reasonable, but pricey @ $26.

Rooms were a descent size and did not lack anything - except for a mini bar which really is a money saver for us travellers.

I have no hesitation in staying their again. A positive experience.

We stayed here in August 2012 previously. Due to its good location close to Chinatown, the Sydney CBD and Darling Harbour, we decided to stay here again for 2 nights in January 2013.

This time we were upgraded to a room on one of the top floors due to our Priority Club "Platinum" status. The room was much better than the one that we were "upgraded" back in August 2013.
We did not dine at this hotel because there are cheaper and tastier food within walking distance in Chinatown.

One thing we noticed on check out was that the hotel charged 1.5% surcharge for all payments with credit card. This was not specifically mentioned to us at the time when we booked the accommodation. We think it is a bit unfair to expect customers to pay 1.5% extra because one would assume that most customers will have to settle their accommodation bill with credit cards (It is practically impossible to pay with cash..one does not carry huge wads of banknotes when one is travelling). The hotel rates are already quite high compared to comparable properties in the area, and it is a bit rough to charge 1.5% on top of the room rate. I have stayed in many Holiday Inns around the world in the past 10 years, and this is the first one that has a surcharge for credit card payments.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us again, your loyalty to the Hotel and to IHG is very much appreciated. IHG introduced the Credit Card Surcharge of 1.5% to all our Hotels globally in 2009, however your honest feedback is highly valued and as such has been passed onto our Regional Office for further review. It is feedback such as yours that allows IHG to continue to monitor guest expectations to ensure that we are continuing to meet your needs and expectations. Thank you once again for your feedback.

Chose this hotel as it was a mid priced hotel, in a reasonable position and also a known group to us. We were surprised at the price of hotels in Sydney as they appear to have gone up in price by somewhere in the region of 25% since 2008. Perhaps some of the increase is down to the value of the pound which is not as strong as our Politicians like to think it is?

The hotel is well positioned for Darling Harbour and a host of reasonibly priced restaurants, although again more expensive than we thought. The hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff were very helpful. Our room had all the facilities one would require and the presence of a "kitchenette" was agood feature. The bar and restaurant in the hotel were good but could get very busy when a concert is on at the event centre across the road. Breakfast was pretty good with excellent service but again the price appeared high.

China Town is just round the corner, so you will never be short of places to eat.

During the day there is a free bus from just round the corner into the city centre and the monorail passes in front of the hotel.

All in all we had avery pleasant stay but for UK visitors like all Sydney Hotels it is quite expensive.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be pretty good as the hotels position is in an area which becomes very quiet at...

The hotel is a bit worn out and tiny. But location is nice where all the major stations & attractions are just within walking distance. Chinatown is around the corner and conveniently located.
Breakfast is terrible and over-priced. Room is run down but luckily it's clean enough.
