We recently stayed in this Hotel the night before embarking on a cruise from Circular Quay. To say the hotel was handy to the cruise terminal is an understatement. It must be no more than 50m from the front door. We had booked through Expedia and for under $230.00 also had a buffet breakfast. Or room was at the back of the hotel and looked out at a cliff face, but given we were about to spend 14 days at sea it didn't matter. The room was basic but quiet. It's handy to all the attractions at The Rocks, the Opera House and Circular Quay. It's an easy walk from the train station at Circular Quay if you catch the Airport Train as we did.

Room Tip: If your after a view may need to pay a little more for a room at the front of the hotel.

We stayed in the Hotel for one night before our cruise and 3 nights on our return. Everything about the place was superb - service, spotlessly clean, excellent food . Australia is not a cheap destination anymore (beer £6-7 a pint)! But given that it was also fair value for money.

Room Tip: We had ours on the 2nd and 5th floor - all very good.

After a rocky start, the extractor fan was on 24/7 in the room,we were given another room.It was a lot better. The hotel was situated really good and close to everything.`The Rocks` were just at the back of the hotel, soom great places to eat/drink.Circular Quays was about a 10 minute walk away. All the staff were very polite and friendly, nothing seemed to be too much trouble for any of them.Very helpful and knowledgeable.Would recommend this place to anyone.Would go back like a shot, given the chance.

Enjoyed a mini break at this lovely hotel in The Rocks area of Sydney.
Great location esp if your planned activities are around the harbour.
Close to many fine dining restaurants, casual eats and cafes.
Circular Quay and The Opera House are within walking distance.
Not too far to walk to other areas in the city - 25mins approx.
If leaving on a cruise, the Overseas Passenger Terminal is parallel to the hotel street.
Reception area is very large with lounge chairs scattered throughout.
There is a lounge area and bar to the left as you walk in.
Computers are to the right - approx. 6.
As of Jan 1st there is free wi fi for priority members.
Staff were professional and friendly.
Our room wasn't ready when we arrived (we were early) so we were told they ring our mobile when ready. We went for a walk for the given time span, came back to the hotel and waited for the phone call. Sat in full view of staff who had served us. After 30 minutes we inquired about our room. Yes it was ready! Oops! No phone call. No apology.
Stayed on the 8th floor (highest) without a view. Could have upgraded for another $45 for a room with a view but we didn't bother. Room was on the small size and looked a little tired. Clean but basic.
Great floor to be on as close to rooftop pool. Again, small pool and area but had no trouble with seating. Only negative was the lack of shade esp in 35+C degree heat. Spoke to staff - they are working on it. Wind is a factor so that explained the lack of umbrellas. Potted palms in sturdy pots perhaps?
Buffet breakfast was great - tasty food and good value. Cost was approx. $27 pp from memory which is very cheap for Sydney. However, if you 'book' at reception it is cheaper - $22pp. Saves having to go looking for food in the morning, which we did a couple of times. Ended up spending more $$$ at a couple of "OK" cafes, and nowhere near as nice.
Got a great package deal considering it was the summer holidays.
Valet parking was $39 per night. Again, cheap for Sydney (Rydges World Square = $60!)
Will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for the 8th floor - quieter and closer to the pool.

Dear n l e,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your break in Sydney. Thank you for your very comprehensive review and positive feedback about our breakfast offering and valet parking. The hotel always endeavours to provide the best value for money to our customers. Our breakfast offering regularly receives similar positive feedback which is greatly appreciated.

In regards to your check-in experience, I apologise for the errors made with our procedures which should not have occurred. I have shared this feedback with our Front Office Management team to address.

In relation to the lack of umbrellas on the roof, unfortunately due to OH&S regulations we cannot erect any structures on the roof which could potentially become projectiles in windy conditions .This includes umbrellas and shade sails. The wind conditions on the harbour can change quite quickly at times making this very difficult.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope to be able to welcome you back to the hotel again in the future.

Kind regards,

Rob & Team Holiday Inn Old Sydney

If you are used to the Holiday Inn brand you will immediately feel at home here. Go into the front doors of the hotel, from the old part of Sydney, and you enter a giant atrium - a huge hall from ground floor to the skylights 8 floors up gives a feeling of space and light. The rooms are reasonably sized, with large comfortable beds. Our room looked over to Circular Quay so the view was right for me - ferries coming and going, even an exotic cruise ship. But you don't come to Sydney to sit in your room as the city is built for strolling around and the weather generally facilitates this.
The usual facilities a traveller/guest requires are here. There are plenty of toiletries in the bathroom, which has shower and bath (although the bath seemed to be on the short side for anyone over 6' tall). There is a nice sized fridge in the room and for me the good thing was it wasn't filled with overpriced mini bar items, so there was room to put in your own refreshments. Hotel decision makers must be getting the message that for most people a mini bar is not a priority but a fridge most certainly is in a hot place.
Staff here are friendly, welcoming and professional - which is as it should be. Breakfast is of the familiar hot buffet style with a chef on hand to sort out eggs for you. Tea/coffee is self service but the machine delivers (nearly) boiling water so you can make a decent pot of tea. The breakfast costs 29 A$ but you can get a small discount if you book the night before.
There is a swimming pool on the roof but I've never tried it - much better to catch the ferry to Manley (14.60 A$ return) and show off your swimming costume on the beach.

A small niggle to be aware concerns the shower, which is not thermostatically controlled but adjusted with separate hot and cold taps. This makes it a little difficult to get your personal temperature setting but I'm sure this will eventually be upgraded as the management at IHG always strike me as being progressive.

Overall, this is a hotel of a good standard in a great location at a reasonable price. I have stayed in the more luxurious (pricier) hotels in Sydney, but for me this strikes the right balance and I would recommend you to try it.

Dear Vic G,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. Your review was very comprehensive, balanced and fair which is much appreciated.

In regards to the hotel water temperatures, these are currently being adjusted in the hotel floor by floor as we are working through our continuous improvement program. We also received your feedback about this matter during your stay which was greatly appreciated.

As you mentioned IHG and our owners are working hard to continue progressing the hotel. We are about to upgrade our entire air conditioning and heating systems in our guest rooms as well as updating the lobby and restaurant furniture. These works will be completed in the coming months.

Thank you once again for choosing to stay with us. We hope to be able to welcome you back in the near future.

Kind regards,

Family of 6 stayed 1 night here on the eve of leaving on a cruise. Vomit was discovered on the bathroom wall in one of the rooms obviously left from a previous guest. Staff did not care! Even when photo's were shown to them! Paying for the location here. Hotel & rooms tired & cleanliness obviously not a priority. Review removed from their website.

Dear baron771,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I apologise that you did not enjoy your stay with us and that you found it to be dreadful.

The hotel is about to roll several updates out of which include updated furniture in our public areas as well as in room systems which will be completed in the coming months. This complements our continuous improvement program which is currently in progress.

Our mattresses have recently been updated with a very reputable brand , I have shared your feedback with my Housekeeping Manager to address with our team and our linen supplier. I wish to apologise for these issues which you encountered. I have also passed on your comments about the mould in your bathroom which was not acceptable.

The pool area has been very busy over the summer period due to the school holidays and has been very popular with our families in house and has been a high traffic area. Our hotel photographs have not been photo shopped to mislead any of our customers.

I thank you for your constructive feedback and wish to apologise that the hotel was not to your liking or up to our usually high standard.

Please accept our apologies once again.
