This Holiday Inn is in an absolutely outstanding location; has fabulous views from the roof top pool; offers great value; is clean and comfortable and the staff we met were all bright, cheerful and helpful.
Sure, you can nit-pick that the bathroom is small; the blinds are worn; the lobby ceiling is a bit tatty and so on. But if you can live with the fact that this isn't the most glamorous hotel in Sydney, it certainly punches well above its weight.
The location is in the heart of The Rocks area (perfect for tourists) but still just far enough away from any noise from the late night crowd. Our room (at the back) was large and comfortable if a little dated. The bathroom wasn't a highlight but it was adequate.
The 8th floor rooftop has a pool and tables and chairs if you want to just take in the panorama which ranges from the Harbour Bridge on the left, to the Opera House, Circular Quay and the CBD on the right. As the overseas passenger terminal is between the hotel and the Opera House, in summer cruise ships either detract from or add to the vista depending on your point of view. During our stay we watched 'Radiance of the Seas' slip away an hour before sunset and woke up with 'Queen Mary 2' in its place.
The breakfast (included in the rate) was pretty well everything you could ask for (although better coffee would have helped).
We would happily have stayed longer than our two nights if we could.

We had 3 nights to spend in Sydney and thus were limited by what we could see and do. We fllew into Syndey, took the train to Circular Quay station and walked 5 minutes to the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. Location is perfect for sightseeing! We walked into the city, to the opera house, to the botanical gardens and abutting sights, took the Ferry to Manly Beach and to Darling. Hotel lobby is open, view from pool on top is to die for. Service good. We booked breakfast with our room and it was one of the best we had in Australia, especially the coffee!

Room Tip: The view is from the roof. Our room was on the side, with little view but quiet...

We have stayed at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney many times. The last time was in December 2012. Fantastic Rocks location right next to The Rocks Markets and all the historic pubs. The roof top pool has the most amazing views over the harbour and of The Sydney Harbour Bridge. The rooms are mostly small and need upgrading but the service at this Hotel is excellent and may I recommend the buffet breakfast as its really a wonderful spread. The staff in the restaurant are attentive and friendly also.
Drinks in the lobby bar are nice and happy hour is a daily occurence.
I will continue to stay at this Hotel for the location and the excellent customer service but it would be great if they upgraded the facilities a bit.
The lobby toilets are generally messy.

Had a fab time in Sydney.Only stayed two nights as stopover on way to NZ but worth it. Hotel in fabulous position near to Harbour Bridge and Opera House, luckily we had view of both from our room. Room ok but bathroom needed updating. Pool on rooftop could be better. Staff very helpful and friendly, no waiting around for check in.

Room Tip: Ask for upgrade to king room with view if available.

I stayed here in January 2013 for 3 nights. It's is a great place to stay in easy reach of the main attractions. The roof top pool has fantastic views of the harbour including to bridge and opera house. The only downfall was that cruise ships dock opposite which block out the view of the opera house but also the ships generators are quite noticeable . Staff are very helpful.pool was good but the spa didn't work properly . Lovely area for shopping there is a weekend market too. Plenty of cafes and bars in walking distance .

Dear gws67

Thank you for your comments and review. Its the first comment we have had on the Cruise Ship generators which I will certainly comment to our council about if this is disturbing our guests. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Glad you enjoyed the other aspects of the hotel, the staff and local area. Hope to see you again soon.

Holiday Inn Old Sydney is a very good hotel, it is in the heart of the city and near to all the amenities, shops, pubs, restaurants and transport which are easily available.
The main lobby of the hotel spacious. The staff friendly and helpful. Working to a price budget, the room we were allocated was nothing special but was clean and tidy, bathroom needs to be updated. But we were out and about all day anyway. There is a very good buffet breakfast, a swimming pool on the roof of the building which overlooks sydney harbour and sydney opera house.
We could easily walk to the business district, darling harbour and sight-seeing areas.

The location is what makes this accommodation great as it's right beside the bridge and a short walk to Circular Quay.

It's clean and accommodating, typical to a normal holiday inn. Pictures of the pool are deceiving as it's really small.

We observed staff on a few occasions being rude to guests - this is not acceptable.
