“Great stay!”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

We loved our stay at this hotel. Although we initially booked a standard room, we decided to upgrade and got a room with a king size bed and view of the bridge and opera house. At check-in we were given the option of prepaying for the buffet breakfast for a discount. They allowed us to do this for just the first night to see if we liked it. We could then choose to do it each day and receive the same discount. This buffet was one of the best hotel buffets we had in Australia. The location of the hotel was excellent. We could walk to all the attractions and we enjoyed being in the heart of the city to see the shops on the weekends. There was a small bar by the fire place in the lobby with a television. We enjoyed having drinks there and met some natives who gave us information about the area. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. They helped us find restaurants, shops and even mail a package. I am glad that we did not choose to stay in a more expensive hotel because I truly feel we would not have gotten anything more than we had at this one.

Location was okay, bed was comfortable, but rooms are freezing even when the heating is on maximum. I had to ask for another blanket on the second night.

Rooms are not very soundproof. I could hear people sneezing and talking next door. Don't get a room that looks into the lane way. A garbage truck turned up at 2.30am to empty 12 bins and they naturally had a lot of glass in them... It went on for about 15mins....then there was more commotion at 4am, you can hear people talking on the street. Not great when you have to work.

Overall it was okay, but I wouldn't return

Dear Bel_199

Thank you for the comments, we are always seeking feedback and how we can do better to ensure our guests are having a great experience with us.

I am disappointed to hear about the room being cold, I wish we could have solved this while you were with us. Please do note that our heating system is fully functional and we do investigate all issues that may arise when we hear about them from our guests.

In regards to the noise issues we will put your personal comments forward to our local council stressing the need for them to adjust their times of such activities, I do apologise for the inconvenience.

With all the above I hope that your future stay with us will be more pleasant, please contact myself or a Guest Experience Manager at the hotel directly when you are coming back.

Kind regards

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in January, 2012. The rooms are small, the hotel is older but it was clean and it was a great place to stay because it was within walking distance to the harbour, shopping, the opera house, sidney harbour bridge. There are lots of wonderful cafes in the same blocks, were you can get a really good breakfast for about $10.00 or less US. Of course everything is expensive in sydney, so it's great idea to fill up on breakfast have snack for lunch and a early dinner. That worked out well for us. It was a great place to stay because it's right int he heart of the rocks district, there's some stores nearby for the snacks and such.

Room Tip: There's only a couple rooms w/a balcony. We were lucky enough to get one without asking, I woul...

We stayed here one night at the start of August. We were in Sydney to go on a cruise, so just needed somewhere clean, comfortable and decent to stay the night before, that wouldn't break the bank. This hotel more than fit the bill.

The big drawcard is quite simply its 'The Rocks' location. It was a fantastic spot for us to eat, drink and be merry for 24 hours, without the need for exorbitant cab fares. Most of us were not overly familiar with Sydney, but we made our way around with ease. It was an excellent base. It also has fantastic roof top views across the Harbour. In one of our rooms we even scored water views, which were particularly stunning due to the great weather.

The rooms were very comfortable and the decor was clean and modern. Bed was comfy and we had a flat screen tv. The bathroom was a bit pokey, looking a little tired and featured a shower over a bath. It was, however, clean and completely functional and suitable for our purposes. We travelled as a couple and three singles. One room featured a queen size bed, while the other had two singles and a foldaway. The size of the room was fine for the couple, but a bit cosy for the three singles, and in both cases there was not a lot of space for luggage.

There is a mini bar available, but not in the room - you need to call room service if you want anything from the mini bar! I found this a little odd. I'm not a big user of the mini bar, but felt like having a little dabble on this night. The fact that I had to go to the hassle of calling and ordering something sort of took away the fun of it, so I gave it a miss. I can't help but wonder if they do themselves a disservice here.

There did seem to be an issue with temperature control in our rooms.. One was overly heated and we couldn't get it to cool down. The other room was very cool and we couldn't heat it. The latter caused us to contact reception to fix it. While staff were sent to look at it, there wasn't much that could be done overnight.

The staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful. When we arrived from the airport around midday, this caused no concern and available rooms ready for us to check-in to then and there were found and allocated. Every encounter with hotel staff was pleasant.

We had full buffet breakfast included in our room rates. Breakfast was reasonable and included a pretty good range of hot and cold options, as well as eggs and pancakes to order. The fruit was a little disappointing and was generally not ripe enough. There is a cocktail/wine bar on the ground floor, which we indulged in a little after returning from a night out. We were surprised when the bar closed without the staff member calling last drinks, but overall this is a nice spot with comfy lounges and armchairs and a gas wood fire to sit around.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore the area, as it's a perfect base with enough trimmings.

Room Tip: Room 432 has great views of Sydney Harbour

Dear princessbandicoot

Thank you for the great feedback on the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. It is always great to read details of how we made you feel during your time with us.

Just to ensure you that we can have your minibar filled before your arrival on your next stay. As many of our guests prefer the space to keep their own items we tend to keep the mini bars empty however next time you stay we will be more than happy to fill it for you.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the service and staff at the hotel. They are a key asset to our success and we take a lot of pride in them delivering great guest experiences.

Thank you for your recommendation and we hope to welcome you back to the hotel also.

Kind regards

We booked a three night stay at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney in July and were very pleased with our choice of hotel. The hotel is located at the foot of George Street in The Rocks and is beautifully placed to visit this part of the city. It is also very well served by the city buses which run past the hotel and will take you to various parts of Sydney, and of course being so central it is possible to walk most everywhere. The hotel is made up of two buildings, one old and one new and our room which was a Deluxe Harbour View room was located at the top of the older building and did have very nice views of the harbour, the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour bridge with windows on two sides of the corner room (#730). The room itself was very spacious and nicely furnished with a very comfortable bed, a nice desk area, a sofa and coffee table, a well-appointed bathroom and loads of storage space. The new part of the hotel is built around an atrium with a skylight and interior corridors whereas the older building is necessarily a bit darker and the corridors are rather dark and inhospitable. The lobby is very spacious and has lots of comfortable seating including seats near an open fireplace which was very popular as the temperatures in Sydney during our stay were definitely on the cool side. The reception staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient and check-in and check-out were handled very swiftly. At the top of the hotel on the 8th floor is an open-air deck and swimming pool which is quite a nice facility and is probably well-used in the summer months. The views of the harbour, the Opera, the CBD and the Sydney Harbour bridge are excellent. We did not have breakfast in the hotel but there is a restaurant on the second floor which does serve breakfast and apparently is quite good. There are a number of cafes and bakeries in The Rocks and the selection of restaurants in the area is impressive. One of our favourite restaurants, Sailors' Thai, is directly across the street from the Holiday Inn and is an excellent place if you like Thai food served in a friendly, informal atmosphere. All in all we were very pleased with our stay at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. It was quite expensive (about US $275 per night) given that it is a very comfortable but not a luxury 5 star hotel, but that seems to be the price you have to pay for central Sydney hotels. If you want to stay in The Rocks, the Holiday Inn Old Sydney really is a very good option and we would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: It is probably worth spending a bit more and getting a Harbour View room on as high a floor as possi...

This hotel is right in the middle of "The Rocks" and it's a touristy area. Very nice location although I wished this hotel is taller. The building must be under strict preservation, and very well maintained. At the highest floor, where the swimming pool is, you can see Sydney's Opera House on your right and Sydney's Harbour Bridge on the left. However the view to the Opera House is a little bit obscured by the building infront.

The rooms are quite typical, similar to the standards of other HolidayInns you see in Australia. But as this building is a very old one, I guess there is only so much you can do/maintain. 1 thing I noted is that, you don't smell the same Holiday Inn fragrance in this hotel.

There was some chaos during checkin and checkout as there's no queue and everyone just stands a few meters away from the counter waiting to be served. There was a sign for PRC Platinum members priority check in, but was unmanned. When I approached a staff and asked if there's a priority checkin, the answer was "No." :P Not a big issue.

Room Tip: Top most rooms at level 8 are the best. You can see Opera house if you are on the right side.

Thank you for your kind feedback. Definitely by our name as the Holiday Inn Old Sydney you have us in one. Our building is Heritage listed as it is in the location of the first settlement of Australia. A lovely piece of Australia's history maintained by Holiday Inn. We are a unique hotel.

Thank you for your comment on the scent of the hotel. We have the same Holiday Inn Scent as everyone else however due to the Atrium we may need to boost it slightly more. I will follow that up, thanks for the advice.

I do hope to welcome you back soon the the unique Holiday Inn Old Sydney and glad to hear you enjoyed your stay.

The room was pleasant enough, beds comfy, reasonable range of consumables. Reception was friendly. nice lobby. close to the rocks precinct, we attended a wedding and stayed right near the reception @ Wolfie's.
However....
you wouldn't want to be too tall because the bath/shower had a very low roof! there was no free parking anywhere, we had to pay to use the hotel's secure parking, or go a few blocks down to park at a wilson's garage or similar, adding to our expense of the night's stay. we had hard access to the hotel late on a friday night (lots of back streets), however unsure if this was roadworks or a regular friday night occurence. the restaurant was HUGELY expensive ($27+ for continental breakfast! NOT buffet!). There was a really nice cafe next door, open when we needed to be at a wedding in baulkham hills by 9:30am on a saturday!
overall the location is fantastic if you're wanting to stay in the rocks precinct however too many drawbacks for us to consider staying here again.

Room Tip: try & get an all-inclusive (breakfast inc) package. don't take a car - extra cost.

Dear superj1978

Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to review us. You have provided great feedback but I would like to clear a few issues you had with us.

Last weekend when you stayed there was the Aroma festival and the main George St was shut however guests were guided around to our hotel where we had escorted exclusive access to ensure our guests are not too inconvenienced. I am sorry to hear this was an issue for you and will follow up.

Breakfast at the hotel is $27.00 for the buffet, $18.00 for the continental. Apologies if there was any misunderstanding but if you speak to the lovely reception team I hear they can get you a great deal for the full buffet if you tell them the night before, just between you and me.

Sydney as a dear great city, much like my home-town London, is a place where free parking is very hard to come by, especially in locations such as the Rocks.

Thank you again for your feedback and I hope I cleared things up for you and you would consider to stay with us again. Should you need any clarification on other points please feel free to contact us at the hotel directly to ensure we meet your expectations should you visit us again.

Kind regards

Mitchell Turner
