The Situation:
My partner and I came to Sydney to see a concert at the Sydney Opera House. We stayed 2 nights and wanted to be walking distance to the Opera House.

The Good:
The Holiday Inn is located in The Rocks in Sydney. This is an historic area of Sydney and you can't beat walking out of your hotel and into a historic, cobble-stoned street that has been there since the beginning of Sydney. Its a great spot within walking distance to Circular Quay (ferries to the zoo, other parts of the city, train station, and more), the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

Another great thing about this hotel: the rooftop pool has views of the Bridge and the Opera House! Just amazing - you can go for a swim and marvel at Sydney's beautiful harbour!

The Bad:
Its an old hotel, so the decor is old, and it looks a little bit tired. They have clearly upgraded all the rooms (nice new Samsung flat screen TV) but the lobby is still dated. Having said that, the rooms have everything you need and are really functional.

The Ugly:
There was a little bit of mould in the bathroom. That's it.

Overall:
Great location, great functional rooms, great staff. I would definitely stay here again.

Dear Sunchaser146

Thank you for your kind words and feedback, we are proud of our hotel and aim to update all areas but we thought we would start with the rooms. There are plans to update other areas of the hotel and all will come in time.

Our great staff look forward to welcoming you back too!

Kind regards

Great location, but like a prison! Horrible, dated rooms and have all the staff been sacked Fromm the local 1 star hotels - not a clue how to treat the guests! Where is the duty manager? Avoid if you can - Darling Harbour is so much better.

Room Tip: Avoid! avoid, and ...

Dear Valued Guest r15xeB

I am so sorry to read you had this experience at our hotel. It is a heritage listed building and we have updated our guest rooms to add to our guests' experience but the outside, in fitting with the Rocks area, cannot be touched ensuring it keeps with the area, if you take the Rocks Walking Tour you'll find out the deep history behind our beloved area.

In regards to the service, our people are usually the best, please contact me directly at the hotel for more feedback if you can, I would like to hear the detail.

Kind regards

Mitchell Turner

This is a great location for Sydney. The hotel is clean and well positioned, the rooms are adequate in size, flat screen television, beds are comfy and the bathroom is fine but more like a three star in its finishings and in its size, if that matters. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. The rooftop pool is small but has a great view of Circular Quay and the Opera House. Even on boxing day the place is relatively quiet, air con was so quiet i had to check it was working. Our checkin was quick and without a problem. I booked through last minute .com and got a better rate.
The main quip we have is that the wooden venetian blinds even when fully closed allow too much light through to the room and this kept my partner awake most of the night.
Breakfast was good with lots of choice , a good selection of breads, raison fruit toast was the best I've had in a hotel, birchner muesli ( needs to be a bit sweeter) , eggs cooked to your liking, lots of fresh fruit, conserves and nice jams. Get a coffee next door at "Fine foods" as the hotels' coffee is very ordinary .

Room Tip: Go to "Fine Foods" next door for lattes, sandwiches and a nice selection of gourmet foods...

Thankfully I was able to purchase this room via a mystery hotel deal and it was much cheaper than the advertised prices through their website. I took this deal to save some money and assumed that the 4 1/2 star rating would still mean it was a great hotel.

The hotel has a strange set-up with a massive open lobby that is overlooked by the rooms. The lifts are on one side of the hotel, so in order to get to my room I had to walk around the entire hotel, which I thought was a little strange. The room had a damp/musty smell to it and shower area had mould and rust around it. You could also hear the shower from the next room loudly. The bed was super comfy and so were the pillows, which was a plus!

The location is good for the Rocks, Circular Quay, the Bridge, Luna Park, Opera House, ferries, MCA etc. It is also quite close to the Circular Quay train station. The rooftop is nice and offers great views of the harbour.

Unless you don't care about a bed way way past its prime then don't stay here. The bed was apallingly old and sagging. We stayed in a king room. The bathhroom is tiny (close the door before you have room to brush your teeth or move) and very tired. The air conditioner is one they retrieved from the ark and makes a noise as loud as a jet plane but is very inefficient. Anyone who says this hotel deserves 4 or five stars is lying. You might find a more comfortable bed around the corner in the youth hostel. The location is not worth the discomfort.
The location is good, the staff were nice, and things were clean but the coffee in the breakfast buffet is undrinkable.

Room Tip: The first requirement of a hotel has to be a bed that one can sleep in - if it doesn't meet this...

A truly great place to stay. convenient to circular Quay and therefore to all of Sydney. helpful pleasant staff, fantastic views from the rooftop pool. only drawack is that the elevator house obscures the view of the opera house if you are sitting in the hot tub.

Our room was not ready until after 4pm, we were offered a complimentary drink while we waited which we were then given a bill for, staff kept telling us " 10 more minutes" as I explained to them , it makes matters worse when you keep telling us 10 minutes as we are waiting here when in fact if we had been told it would be hours then we would of gone to do something,at that point I was told " we don't know when house keeping will have your room ready" when you pay nearly $300 for one night, you are entitled to be able to access your room by the advertised time . When the room was finally ready it was a shoe box , the smallest hotel room I have ever had with one small window, this room was so small the wall was on an angle, it looked like a storage room converted to a hotel room. The valet parking we paid $45 consisted of our car being left on the steep ramp and no assistance or even offer to help us with our bags and it was raining. I felt like i was staying at formula one, very cheap decorated rooms, budget furniture and poor service, this would have to be the worst hotel experience I have ever had and I paid nearly $300 a night, had already paid for another stay the following week so I was committed sadly to stay again, I will not return to this hotel ever again, they appear to be massively under staffed or unorganized , still waiting for my bill to be sent out as they " were not able to print one off" when we checked out. Good location is the only positive thing I could say as we spent the least amount of time possible at the hotel so we saw a lot of the rocks and the harbour but there are many other quality hotels close by and for the same money so we will be booking elsewhere next time.
