“Excellent hotel in the heart of historic Sydney”
Reviewed June 16, 2011

I had two nights on the top floor of this older-style hotel with views of old warehouses, Opera House and Harbour, which was fantastic. Very nice quite large room, impeccably maintained, with double-glazed windows that actually open - hooray for old hotels. Pity it is winter and too cold to want them open! My only complaint is that the room didn't get very warm despite heating being set at maximum, and the doona was very light; I doubled it over to get enough warmth. The outdoor pool on the 8th floor is a highlight of the hotel - not large, but fabulous location and views. Very nice helpful staff. Excellent breakfast which at about $20 was real value for money unlike in many of these big hotels. Being here for work I was initially a bit concerned that the Rocks area is a bit far from the business centre of Sydney, but I realised that it's only 15 minutes' pleasant walk to Martin Place and the central business area, and it's great to stay in the historic Rocks precinct. This hotel had a nice feel, is older-style and therefore not nearly as expensive as many others in central Sydney (about $200/night) and I'd definitely stay there again.

We stayed four nights at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. After a fifteen hour flight, we arrived rather early, but the staff got us into our room promptly. The room was comfortable and clean. We did not experience noise problems here at all. The view from our window was beautiful. The staff was always more than happy to help us with local travel information. The location is superb...walk out the front door to the Harbor, short walk to the ferries, trains and buses. We loved this hotel and would highly recommend it for those staying in Sydney.

We loved our stay here, the lobby and set up of the hotel is quite dark and dreary as you walk in. BUT! and its a BIG BUT the location is just amazing! You will not find a better place to stay in Sydney than here. The views of the Harbour Bridge, the Rocks area is just so fantastic and a brilliant place to stay in Sydney.
The rooms are quite small but have tea/coffee facilities and a fridge, when you are in Sydney you are only going to spend a small amount of time in your room so once its clean that's all that matters!
We where there in December and it was fantastic as there were Christmas Markets on in the Rocks area and it really made the stay a special one.
We also did the Bridge Climb which I'd highly recommend, its a once in a life time experience.

We have stayed at the Old Sydney Holiday Inn many times. I have noticed that it needs urgent refurbishment of the rooms. The furniture is starting to look very tired (i.e. damaged surfaces on desk and tv cabinet, the desk chair was broken). The mattress (we had a twin bedded room this time) was very uncomfortable and sagging. It is such a beautiful hotel and location. It's a shame that the rooms are starting to become neglected. The buffet breakfast was very nice.

We had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for one night before embarking on a cruise from Circular Quay. We couldn’t have got closer accommodation if we tried. It was literally across the road and down a short walkway.

The Rocks area is historic and interesting. It’s close by the bridge and close enough to walk to the Opera House. There are also plenty of eateries in the surrounding area. Some costing big bucks! So be warned. The ferry terminals are also close by.

The staff at the front desk who checked us in were very friendly and informative of the local area. We arrived early and thankfully our room was available for us to leave our luggage and head off exploring.

Our room was neat and tidy with 2 comfortable double beds and a small fridge. The bathroom had all the necessary complementary toiletries, plenty of towels and a hairdryer. Our room wasn’t noisy as mentioned by some other guests who have written reviews, but that is possibly due to the fact we were at the back of the hotel, not overlooking the road?

Breakfast the following morning was plentiful, including a self-serve juicer, pastries/toast, cereals, fruit and the usual cooked fare and tea & coffee.

There was a small pool and spa on the roof top (which had great views over Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera house and surrounding areas) we didn’t have time to use these facilities, but others were making the most of them.

The hotel also has a storage room which we used to hold our luggage free of charge whilst we explored more of the city after checking out the following morning.

Whilst staying there we misplaced our daughters Nintento DS & games and thankfully it was found and returned to us with no hassles. For that we are extremely grateful.

All in all I would stay here again if in Sydney as the location is fantastic and the hospitality and service was great too.

My wife and I stayed in the Rocks section of Sydney where this hotel is located. Our decent sized aroom was on the 7th floor with a view of the Sydney Opera House across from Circular Quay. No need for taxis, the hotel is convenient to Circular Quay trains and ferries and all the major Sydney sites are within walking distance. A word of warning though, the American dollar does not go very far in Sydney these days particularly if you are fond of fine dining. Fortunately, we found some passable moderately priced restaurants in the Rocks within walking distance of the hotel which BTW also provides a simple continental brekkie for $10 - 12 AUD. The nearest Coles (reasonably priced grocery store) is about one mile from the hotel. If you are travelling to Oz for an extended stay get to Coles. They are in every city. My only complaint with the hotel and it is a general one for all hotels in Oz is that the typical charge for wifi or internet connection is $25 per day. We brought an ipad and had to hoof it to McDonalds for free wifi, bummer. Sydney itself though is fabulous and this hotel could not be better located (check out the Royal Botanic Garden for great photos of the cockatoos, fox bats and the iconic view from Mrs. McQuarie's Chair). The ferry ride to Manly is awesome !

Room Tip: It pays to book in advance or Wotif

Much to my horror in getting back home and realising I'd misplaced a bag with a camera in it worth of over $5000 I rang and asked for there help in tracking down the wereabouts of the bag. At this stage i wasn't sure if i had left in the room or if it was left on the foot path or stolen maybe from trolly of luggage. With a full understanding of the situation they reviewed security footage and left no stones unturned they found the bag were i had left it. THANKYOU!!!!

Room Tip: Make the most of the roof top. take some nibbles.
