Im not sure if all readers are aware of the practise of "finning" sharks, ill let you do your own research, but in summary its a barbaric slaughter of sharks for their fins, the rest of the fish is disposed of overboard. Its a shameful "custom". While staying at the Darling I opened the room service menu to find "shark fin soup". This is unacceptable in a western country, I will never stay here again. The hotel itself is dark and uninviting, catering for a specific type of client that frequents casino's, the tv's loop Chinese language shows and I felt like I was intruding. Not good.

Stayed 2 nights, can't speaking highly enough of the experience. Check-in was smooth and professional. Mark, the Concierge, was unbelievable. He sourced Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial prior to our arrival and delivered this to our room on time as arranged. Dinner at Sokyo (now our 2nd time) was extraordinary as expected. Wonderful staff, perfect atmosphere. Overall The Darling certainly delivers on all fronts, the premium price is well worth the experience. We live in Sydney and this is certainly our preferred location for a short break or celebration.

My partner and I stayed here for one night in Feb 2014, it was recommended by a family member who had stayed here on a business trip so I did have high expectations after hearing reviews and also viewing tripadvisor. We were greeted straight away by friendly staff who took our bags and parked our car, we then dealt with the manager on reception who upgraded us to a Jewel Suit! Our room was available immediately, the suite was stunning, massive with plenty of room and of course we had a view of the harbour bridge, everything was perfect we ordered room service the next morning which again was great, when booking the room we got buffet breakfast included however the manager let us change to room service and that was then included as our breakfast without having to pay. The staff also helped us the next morning to work out ferry times as we were wanting to go to Cockatoo island, our whole experience was magical and it being a special night for my partner and myself it definitely was. I cannot wait to stay here again

I stayed here for 1 night after seeing Strictly Ballroom. The spa was fantastic. i didn't use the hotel's pool, but the pool area was nice and the hot tub was great! The bed in my hotel room was very comfortable and the amenities were good. The only thing I didn't care for was the lack of privacy in the open bathroom. Our room rate came with breakfast visa the casino's buffet. All in all, a good experience.

Take anything out for more than 30 seconds and it's charged to your bill.....and these fridges have no room for anything of your own - so even if you order say a bottle of wine via room service - and don't finish drinking the bottle - you have no where to keep it cold overnight. Even the nuts and chips were 'wired'!!! It's been years since we encountered these ridiculous fridges (last time at the Hilton in Sydney) and I think they simply don't belong in a 5 star hotel. Perhaps management don't trust their customers? When you're paying $250 for a standard room and $400 for a suite, surely they can afford to provide a more flexible mini bar system. All we can assume is that they must accommodate a lot of dishonest guests at the Darling. Enough said.

Other than the mini bar issue...we arrived at 5 pm, only to be told that our room was not ready and we would have to wait! After some huffing and puffing from my other half, another reception lady came to the rescue and kindly upgraded us to a jewel suite.

The suite was tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished - bed was excellent - and had fun with all the light and curtain buttons. Room service dining was good - especially the breakfast congee (which was enough for 2 people).

Was just a shame about that unfinished bottle of white that sat in the ice bucket overnight...only to be room temperature the next day - because we couldn't put it in the fridge!

Convenient place to stay for a show at the Lyric theatre or if you want time in the casino. Otherwise, our pick is still the Pullman Quay Grand - huge fridge!

Stayed at the Darling in a Jewel Suite for a weekend in March.
First impressions of the hotel were not so great. We arrived on a late flight to Sydney, and had a hire car. It took us awhile to find the entrance to the hotel, and when we did there was no-one there to take the car away, let alone greet us. Although we only had to wait a few minutes, and it was fairly late at night (~10:00pm), it is these little things that really differentiate between hotels.

The room was nice and modern. Everything can be controlled by the TV - which at times we found annoying since the remote control lagged at times. The bathroom was very large, with an equally large walk in wardrobe. However, bedroom was a lot smaller than expected with the TV literally at your feet. Found this a bit odd as the rest of the room was quite spacious. Bed was very soft and comfortable, with a great range of pillows to choose from.

Room service was great and highly recommended. The food was delicious!!

Overall it was a good stay - although everything was fine in our room, we felt there was nothing that really sets this hotel aside from other hotels. It is good if you want to be close to the casino and Darling Harbour. However, for those that want something a bit more luxurious with better views of Sydney, I highly recommend staying in The Rocks Area.
