Description: The Commons Local Eating House indulges Sydney locals with seasonally influenced, ingredient-focused cuisine. The name 'THE COMMONS' refers to the 'shared environmental and cultural resources of a city', and we are proud to support Sydney producers wherever we can. Our produce is sourced as ethically as possible, with meat coming from trusted suppliers who are committed to good animal husbandry, we make all attempts to find out where our seafood comes from, utilize fresh produce mostly from around NSW, and support local artisan food makers. The Commons is a celebration of Australia and food & wine inspired by it: the perfect convivial setting for a meal served family style. Complimenting the Chef's cuisine that combines local sensibility with European traditions, particularly those of the Italian Regions, is a value driven wine list whose focus is on small production vineyards of the Australian regions and a few cellar picks from the "Old Country", Italy. The building itself is a tribute to Darlinghurst's heritage architecture with its sandstone walls, original features throughout, convict markings still visible in the basement larder now a intimate cocktail bar "Downtown": hide away from the busy hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a good ol' drink and some of the best blues and jazz in town. We look forward to welcoming you soon at The Commons Local Eating House & Downtown Bar

Loved the look of this place and the big wooden tables inside.... by the fire. Then you realise how loud it is in there and you wait for service... and wait. The food was good though.

When we arrived at The Commons it was closer to lunch than to breakfast and as a result (presumably) they had run out of a significant portion of things on the menu. The lack of choice paired with the excruciatingly slow service to order drinks, get drinks, and order food, left us feeling a bit disheartened. However, this was more than made up for when our food came. We were very happy with what we ordered, the food was all very good! The 'slab' bacon was incredible, well worth the extra $2 with the 'Farmer's Breakfast'. We sat in the outdoor area on the wooden tables amongst the hanging plants which was nice, this place must be dog-friendly as we were the only outdoor table without one!

This rustic eating house is goes back to the basics of using fresh seasonal ingredients and having a meal without any pretensions. The farmhouse setting and wooden tables and chairs add to the charming vibe of this place.

The breakfast item of corned beef hash with poached egg was delicious. The egg was perfectly prepared (delicately solid on the outside but semi liquid form on the inside) which literally melted in my mouth. The lunch item of BBQ pork ribs was soft, almost falling off the bone, and the glaze was just perfect.

Word has it that The Commons was born out of a group of friends who wanted a place where friends could gather for a simply good meal in a down-to-earth setting and I think this place is a gem. The sandstone wall in a farmhouse setting completes it all.
