Description: 1945 is a restaurant specialising in Dutch East Indies cuisine. Dutch East Indies was the Dutch colony that is now modern Indonesia. The Dutch colonial feast, Rijsttafel (literally translates to Rice Table) was invented during the era to showcase the abundance of exotic spices of the Indonesian archipelago, and it remains popular even after the country’s independence in 1945. Inspired by Rijsttafel, here at 1945 we are reliving the era to bring to you the finest of cuisines that pay homage to various regions of Indonesia. Served in small servings, one can savour the many distinct flavours, colours and textures of the vast array of dishes spanning from classic popular to unknown hometown fares in just one sitting. 1945 invites you to take a journey back in time, and to taste the rich blend of Indonesia’s vibrant cultures on a plate.

“A great find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2012

We enjoyed Rijsttafel whilst living in Holland some time ago. 1945 is a great find with authentic dishes and nice ambience. Mud Crab is a speciality and tastes brilliant - just be prepared for the mess.

“Fond Memories of Mama's cooking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

This is a lovely Restaurant, some might think it pricey but its not, its all relative in the Sydney market place, and the work that goes into such a great meal is worth paying for.

They serve some wonderful and exotic flavoured food from the Dutch East Indies, Food like RijsTafel ( Rice Table ) that my mum used to make when I was a child as she was born in Malang Indonesia, ( Dutch East indies then ). The rijstafel has a large range of varied dishes that include sate and Sate sauce, Krupuk, ( prawn crakers), rice, homemade eggrolls, and Nasi Goreng, it dosnt stop there, the dishes are unique, different and very nice.

This is a very nice restaurant and the waiters are very friendly and helpful, I wanted to try everything but they said I would have enough with the three selections I made, so no over selling which is nice. I had a very nice time and the food was very tasty, I closed my eyes and was ever so briefly transported to some very happy Fond memories of my childhood. Very good indeed.

1945 takes you back to traditional Indonesian food.

Great visual experience with all the right things from the wooden menu "box" through to food served on leaves.

“Food is tasty, service needs some work”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2012

We visited 1945 with 2 other friends on friday. We liked the contemporay asian decor, it looks quite polished. it gives the impression of a quality restaurant.
The drinks took some time to order and arrive. I agree with the other reviewer; they had no idea about the wines. We choose the the 'Grand Rijsttafel' for 4 ($170 for 4 people) and, while it is not that expensive, for those prices you expect restaurant quality service as well as good food. The service is just clumsy. They are very friendly and mean well but the service belongs in the little cheap and cheeful Asian on the corner rather than in an 'expensive' restaurant.
The soup as a starter was the major let down; it was too sweet and almost inedible. (tip to the restaurant: skip the soup, serve some kroepoek as a starter and a dessert included would be nice too). The rijsttafel itself was the highlight, every one of the dishes was delicious and quite authentic in flavor. The wait staff should really explain all the dishes with their indonesian names, so instead of: 'stewed cabbage salad' they should just say 'gado gado'. So we were told we also had ' Prawn on a stick', 'Fried mashed potato' and 'Corn fritters'.
Overall, a good experience, yummy food but too expensive for what it is.
