I booked in to Jackaroo after going to have a look around and reading reviews online which are generally really good. On looking around I like that it was clean and had a board advertising daily activities which as a solo traveller seemed like a great idea.

Within my first few hours of staying I felt like an unwelcome guest. This is the most cliquey place I have ever stayed in. The atmosphere was horrible. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned how unfriendly staff were to people who were not staying longterm. I definitely noticed this! The staff were often cold and also behaved in an unprofessional and cliquey manner with longstay guests, particularly the international staff who were presumably on working visas. The girls staying in the hostel were very unfriendly and the 'men' were vulgar. Im not prudish but the conversations i had to endure while using the internet were just offensive in every manner - racist, sexist, you name it!! No body ever smiled or acknowledged anyone outside of the clique.

The events in the evening were overtaken by longstay people meaning that again i felt unwelcome. In fact, the guy who would round people up would noticeably ask certain people every night if they were joining in (namely 'the lads' and any blonde girl wearing hot pants).

Another downer was that much of the building does not have windows and nor did my room. I have stayed in one hostel like this before and it is well advertised and rooms without windows are discounted. It is awful that this is not made clear on booking. I suffered awful headaches throughout my stay.

There are good points about the hostel:
Central location
Free internet
Clean rooms
Free breakfast

The free pizza night was rubbish. Staff got two vegetarian pizzas but made no attempt to encourage non vegetarians to not take this pizza. As a result I was left with two slices of pizza despite being the only vegetarian there. The men were complete pigs and when I pointed out that they were taking ALL of the vege pizza when there was lots of meat pizzas left I got laughing and a response of "it's all good". After saying something I heard a female member of staff talking and laughing about me asking "what my problem was".

I really didn't enjoy my stay here. Despite some good facilities the atmosphere was just horrible. How the hell they have won awards is beyond me! The staff encourage the atmosphere so they really need to model consideration towards others and acceptable conduct, not badmouth guests, show preference to long stay guests and not spend forever walking around half naked flirting with other guests/staff. The female staff in particular have a serious attitude problem!

Room Tip: check if your room has windows - not all do

The hostel is well located in Kings cross. This is the party area of the town but as long as you don't get one of the rooms at the front of the building you will sleep well. It is hard not to get caught up in the night life and you will probably get in late anyways. Ok so the facilities: The kitchen is kind of small but I think the owners are planning on expanding the kitchen. If they are not then the kitchen is too small for the amount of people staying at this place. The eating area is more than large enough and always clean. The breakfast is basic but enough to get you through to your next meal. The wifi is good in the reception but we had problems with the wifi in our room on the top floor. The owners and the staff are great and very helpful. They even stayed up late to greet us for a late check in at 1 AM. The bathrooms are clean enough and there are enough of them. The private rooms are a tad small but like I said before as long as you do not get a room in the front of the building you will sleep well. Event nights are fun, free wine night (the wine never stopped comming, there was enough for everyone), walks, etc... there was even one of the guests who sang on a friday night event night. Had a great time and it shows that the owners enjoy their job and they are always on site.

Room Tip: Do not get a room on the front of the building

I loved this hostel! The owners are great guys who are always there to help! The free wifi was amazing. The rooms had shelves for your bags which was great. The bathrooms and showers were spacious and the movie room was big and had a ton of dvds. It would be nice if you could get to the kitchen before 730, but that was no big deal. Also, being in Kings Cross, it was very, very loud at night due to our room being right above the main street. All in all, great hostel and i'll definitely hit it up if I go back to Sydney!!

We spent 4 nights at jackaroo and had a blast! Jade one of the managers/owners was an awesome host, organising loads of free and cheap things to do with the help of Trev! couldnt ask for more, great value stay in a nice clean place, right next door to the train station and looking over the cheap and entertaining street of darlinghurst!

If you want cheap, clean and well located accomodation and managers who work their butts off to make sure you make the most of your stay and enjoy your stay as much as possible, look no further!

they had heaps of activities organised and a excellent kitchen, plus free wifi, internet, free wine night, clean rooms and hostel throughout, free pool table and lockers, by far the best place ive stayed in Sydney, dont miss it!
