As a couple in our late 30s we were a little unsure about YHA's as we haven't used them since we were 20yrs old.

How pleasantly surprised we were. It was modern, clean and the location is excellent. We (hetro couple) stayed in a mixed dorm and it was fine.

We met a number of other travellers, attended the great value bbq on the roof top and all of the staff were knowledgeable and keen to offer tips and help and assist us with our travel arrangements.

The Sydney Harbour YHA was the first Hostel my friends and I stayed at in Australia. It definitely started our trip of right.
First of all the hostel was clean and had everything we needed. We had a room on the third floor that had 2 bunk beds, 4 lockers and a bathroom. The beds were comfortable, the lockers easily fit our backpacks, and the shower had great water pressure. Of course the best part was walking outside our room and seeing the Opera House off the terrace.
The location of the hostel was the reason we stayed here. It was very close to the Circular Queue. We were able to walk to the Opera House, and Botanical Gardens in addition to the Bridge Climb which was down the block.
Great location and it was worth the price. My only comment would be if you have a car, it is hard to find street parking. They do have a deal with a nearby parking garage, but if I remember correctly it was about 40 dollars overnight.

Stayed 4 nights - throughly recommended for location, views (over harbour in our case), facilities (grocery store next door and communal kitchen). Quiet even with school groups staying. Reception staff helpful with ideas and directions.

Well kept relatively new building. Location great. Can't be beaten for the price. Rooms on the northern side can get a bit hot however and staff must 'enable' air-conditioning in your room which can be a bit of a hassle. Overall though a good experience for a fussy traveler.

Hi AustralianJim
Thanks for your review and glad you enjoyed your stay. With the air con, YHA have tried to make this hostel as environmentally friendly as possible and so air con is switched on at the request of guests rather than having it run 24/7 in empty rooms. This, and other green features of this building, have led to it having a considerably lower carbon footprint than other hostels, which we think our members and guests will appreciate.

We look forward to seeing you again at another YHA.

RTW trip with my wife & two daughters (12 & 14). We stayed from December 29 - January 3, 2014. The location in The Rocks is excellent, and the view of Sydney's Opera House and Harbor Bridge from the rooftop terrace is fantastic. The view and party from the terrace on New Year's Eve was as good as it gets. However, as I'm writing this, I have been listening to kids jumping off their beds and running around for hours in an adjacent room. This has been going on every single night with Very little assistance from the hostel staff. I'm not sure as to why the sound travels through this building the way that it does, but I would not recommend staying here unless you are on the uppermost floor. Even ear plugs do not help. Our room was not very clean or attractive; but the view still makes it a reasonable value on the most expensive night of the year.

Room Tip: Book a room on the top (third) floor and maybe you can get a quiet night's sleep.

Hi Staledale
Thank you for your feedback, which we take very seriously. This hostel has a 24 hour reception and our staff will always try to help where noise is an issue. Like all accommodation, it does sometimes come down to encouraging all guests to be considerate of others and unfortunately you didn't have a good experience with neighbouring rooms. The hostel staff and management discuss all reviews to ensure that we continually work on our customer service so thank you for your comments.

Great place for a rest, ideal location with easy access to centre quay train station and the many cafés in the Rocks. Quite a few families and kids staying, not a party hostel. The rooftop terrace us really cool, great views! The hostel was clean, and the staff are great. Internet is expensive! It would be great to have free Wifi.
