Sydney Harbour YHA was the first hostel we've ever stayed. But never regret at all. The service starts from replying our email (since Nov last year) until during our stay were excellent. The receptionist are young guys who were very helpful. We stayed 4 nights on July 2-6 at twin/double room with views (they only have 1 room like this, so you must book early). The rooms were clean, big enough, ensuite bathroom. The hostel is located in 5 stars district but very cheap room rate. Be a member, and you can get discounted room rate even your food in Wok Inn Noodle.
You can visit Big Dig at ground floor of hostel, walk to behind hostel are Susannah Place, The Rocks Discovery Museum, Cadman's Cottage, Sydney Harbour, Overseas Passenger Terminal (you can get best photos of Sydney Opera/surroundings in this place!), Circular Quay, Sydney Opera, Royal Botanic Gardens etc. No transport fee, only your feet and comfortable shoes.
Very recommended hostel.

First class cheap accommodation in a new venue. Facilities are excellent. Lots of stairs!
Very helpful staff apart from from one older obnoxious person. Central to Sydney town shopping and ferries.Views from the rooftop are stunning, overlooking the harbour with its iconic sites eg. Opera House, Harbour Bridge. Good pub next door and also well stocked convenience store adjacent to property.

You can´t have a better location for this price. No complains, the room was clean ( we got a family room with shower) and comfortable. Despite the fact that there´s a road next to the YHA we could have a good rest because we got really tired visiting the city and Blue Mountains.
The staff was very kind and helped a lot giving us directions and tips about Sydney.

We were super impressed by the Sydney Harbour YHA. We stayed last month for two nights in a private room with bathroom. We were travelling with our toddler and found it to be very family-friendly. The general vibe of the hostel is great - clean, great common areas and a wonderful rooftop terrace. (If you can arrange to stay during Vivid Sydney even better!!!) The hostel is spread over three floors and is easy to get around. Good facilities - the kitchen was well-equipped and organised, the laundry had plenty of machines and the TV rooms comfy. Our room was clean, comfortable and had some great little touches like in-room recycling bins and a kettle with tea and coffee. The beds were great - even the pull out trundler bed for our son was nice to sleep on. The location in The Rocks is superb. The history of the area is fascinating and the hostel even has an archaeological dig site underneath it with some interesting exhibits.

The only negative I can think of is that the location is hard to access with a stroller as you have to climb a very steep street (with stairs) to reach George Street or Circular Quay.

Would definitely stay here again.

Hi FlashpackerFam
Thanks for your review of Sydney Harbour YHA and glad you enjoyed your stay.
Unfortunately, the Rocks (in line with their name!) is a hilly area with steps between the older buildings. However, there are some alternative (but slightly longer routes) to avoid steps. We also always recommend that people travelling by train to the hostel (particularly from the airport with luggage) get off at Wynyard station not Circular Quay. Then they have a flat easy walk to the hostel. There is a map and detailed instructions on our website that can be printed off.
Hope to see you again here or at one of our other YHAs in Australia.

My congratulations go to whoever dreamed up the concept for this place. It is really something quite unique. Slightly put off by the tariff, we chose this hostel because of the location. It didn't disappoint!
First impressions - friendly reception, archaeological dig, short walk from Circular Quay, clean modern room - were all positive.
We have stayed in may different locations in Sydney and this is most definitely the best when using public transport. We were able to use the ferries to access harbour walks, Manly, etc and with supermarket, art galleries, restaurants and pubs close by .

We took advantage of the "sausage sizzle" once night when we were too tired to go out and though the roof top terrace was cold (winter) the spectacular views compensated.

Kitchen facilities are also well thought through. My only reservation was the room was cold in the afternoon because the airconditioning only came on when the temperature fell below 19 degrees - a bit cold for Queenslanders!

I stayed in the YHA on a trip to Sydney in february and was pleasantly surprised. For a place fully booked out, there was very little noise, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Also loved the way the place was built around the Big Dig, great idea! Room was very clean, shower was awesome and there's soooo many power points! Great design, and the view from the rooftop is breathtaking. Well worth a stay!

Can you tell we had a good time? We had a family room with bathroom. Spacious, clean and comfortable. Very nice bathroom. Towels supplied, so no taking damp towels with you. Views from the deck on the top floor are spectacular. The hostel was full but didn't feel crowded. The location is superb right in the middle of the action. You can walk to most places. We travelled with teenagers (17 & 18) they could go and explore Sydney and we did the cultural and historic stuff. The best hostel we have visited.

Room Tip: A room on the eastern side would get a view.
