If you are looking for a showcase restaurant with design features and staff in uniforms, then this is not for you. Corellis is quintessential Newtown (inner city Sydney, university locale and diverse crowd) - one of the few cafes with more than a couple of tables outside for people watching and providing dog friendly, group friendly, lone diners and family friendly service to loyal locals and drop ins.
The food provided is a good variety of all day breakfasts, meals and specials - it would be in the band of consistently good rather than foodie excellent, but its identity is not espoused to be polished nor gourmet. Meals are of reasonable or more than reasonable size, are well priced and there is a reason locals return so good means good.
Sure staff are not in the white and black uniform brigade and dress in their various tribe appearance so may appear disconcerting to the unfamiliar - all part of the diversity of Newtown and for most part the staff, certainly the core staff, are friendly and helpful, even when they are slammed as generally occurs on weekends with full capacity and locals waiting 'in the wings' for tables. Would hate to think that the hard working core staff would be tarred with accusations of lack of service. Though have to be honest and say that have had occasional grumpy service from some casuals, now apparently gone.
So fine dining, it is not, but neither is it a low quality place. Corellis is a Newtown favourite of locals for coffee and cake, or good and fresh meals at reasonable prices with great location on King Street with long opening hours. If you want to experience inner Sydney favourites as the locals do, then this is the place for you.
