“A nice evening for two”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

I was planning on dining at the Spice Temple for a while now so I was happy when we finally managed to book an evening for two. The atmosphere is quite intimate, with very dimmed lights and subtle music. Service was very polite and efficient. The food was great at most part, but the fish arrived undercooked. However, the staff quickly rectified the mistake by providing us with a new portion and taking the dish off our bill completely. Overall, an enjoyable dining experience and a hidden gem in Sydney's CBD.

“Neil Perry knows how to do Asian.”
Reviewed March 27, 2013 via mobile

One of my favourites in Sydney. The flavours are insane. Been here twice and never been disappointed. Numbing pork is a winner as so is the tea smoke duck that you need to order in advance with the mandarin pancakes. Always happy to go back.

“Truly Excellent 70th Birthday for Mum”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

We booked the small private dining room for my mother's 70th Birthday on Saturday night. There were 8 of us and it was truly stunning. I cannot speak too highly of the meal and the service.

Spice Temple is one of hubby and my favourite restaurants in Sydney. We are fortunate to travel the world and eat at some truly spectacular restaurants. We also have date night every Friday and as a result we have eaten at many of Sydney's prominent establishments on numerous occasions. Spice Temple always offers really interesting food and the tastes are spectacular. We say, if you ever have a bad meal at another restaurant, you can always depend on Spice Temple to bring you back!

I would definitely recommend the private dining room for a special occasion. In planning the special night I emailed the restaurant with a menu that I thought would be good and they communicated really clearly and suggested servings and combinations.

They provided a special menu and a strawberry mascarpone cake.

My family from Tasmania were amazed at the diverse and unusual flavours. We had everything from Quail with custard to Bamboo Pith with eggs to the spectacular Lamb and Fennel Dumplings. And let's just say the hot and numbing sweet and sour pork tastes like candy! We had to order an extra plate of the dumplings for my brother.

We have friends who have lived in Hong Kong who say that they go to Spice Temple to reminisce. It is their favourite dining experience in Sydney.

If you haven't been, and you love food, you definitely need to go. Yes the main restaurant is darker (intimate!) than the private room, and yes the feel is dark modern opulence, but this place is actually all about the food and for us they can do no wrong.

“Interesting cuisine, worth trying”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Interesting cuisine, worth trying, especially the dish with the Schezuan peppercorns. We didn't think the cocktails were anything special, and it was slightly overpriced, but still enjoyed our meal.

Very dimly lit, so you can't see properly. Could use a bit more lighting.

Service was average - nothing special. The waiter didn't advise us properly in terms of the quantity of food, and we ended up ordering too much. So, of course, you end up paying much more.

Takes ages to get one simple drink.

“Great ambience, good service... Food can swing either way”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Loved, loved, loved the ambience.... Right from the intriguing entrance (for some reason I had visions of the LCD screen on the door magically making way for an entrance, if I touched the fluttering curtains!) to the dark dining area, which has an awesome romantic feel.

The cocktail menu is really creative and interesting and I would highly recommend the Silk & Sand (glen morangie, cherry brandy, spice and citrus) and rickshaw (gin, hibiscus and vanilla). Lovely flavors that worked very well together. I found the coffee flavor in the Qing Dynasty cocktail (esprsso, chilli, hazelnut and tequila) too overpowering though. They have an excellent wine list of 100 wines, selected to complement the spicy food... And the French Gewürztraminer that we selected worked well.

The food menu has plenty of choice and is meant for sharing... It was difficult to narrow down to 4-5 dishes ( which is what the waitress recommended for 2 people). The fish drowned in heaven facing chillies was just out of this world! Amazing flavours, and not too spicy ( even though the dish is highlighted in red). The fried rice with conpoy was excellent and was great with the fish. The beef fillets with blistered peppers and black beans and the three shot chicken were unfortunately quite disappointing. The mango pudding dessert, though simple, was fantastic... Sooo creamy with just the right amount of mango and served with an excellent caramalied sesame cracker.

The service was courteous and friendly... I felt perhaps they were short staffed so at times it took a little while to get the waitress's attention. But they were really open to feedback... We pointed out that the beef was not cooked medium rare as had been described to us... She apologized and even got us complimentary cocktails.

Felt the food should have been better, given the 150pp bill. Would have rated 3 on food alone, but the service and ambience did add to the overall experience.
