“Ok Hotel.”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment for 3 nights. We also booked a roll away bed. The apartment was very large, with full kitchen and utensils, large bathroom with separate shower and bath. And also a laundry. There was also a balcony. The room was clean.
We also booked a carpark which was well priced for sydney, and we could come and go as we liked.
The front desk staff were very friendly and efficient.
The hotel is in the CBD but yes, it's right next to the trains. And yes you can hear them, quite loudly. I'm not quite sure why this hotel doesn't have sound proofing.
I was pleased with the room itself except for a few things.
The air con is very very loud. When it is on, you cannot hear the trains.
In the bedroom, the mirrored wardrobe door had massive cracks in it and was actually being held together by lots of masking tape. Personally i think that that much damage to the mirrored door should have made the room unfit for booking until it was fixed. The hotel was completely booked out so we had no chance of moving rooms.
The shower screen also had a huge crack in it.
There was no internet available at all.
The King Size bed was actually two twin beds pushed together. This made the middle of the bed really hard. So my husband and I basically might of well been sleeping in separate beds. The beds were also quite old, uncomfortable and sagged where other people have slept before.
The rollaway bed was actually very comfortable, and seemed almost new, or maybe rarely used.

Room Tip: ask for a well maintained room.

The room was clean. The indoor pool was great. It was good value for money. The staff were helpful. It's near central train station so obviously you can hear train noise but it wasn't really an issue. It's not the poshest hotel in Sydney, but its one of the cheapest and it does the job just fine.

At the beginning of December three of us stayed on the twelfth floor in a large two bedroom apartment overlooking downtown Sydney. It had recently been refurbished with new carpet, new appliances/furniture, repainted, retiled bathrooms and comfortable king beds. The bedrooms were at the back of the apartment which shielded us from any traffic noise. The front lounge/dining was over 30 square metres in size and one had to keep the sliding door leading onto the balcony closed to avoid noise from the tooting trains. The Oaks parking area is only small and you need to advise ahead if you require it at $25 a night. The heated pool and spa on the sixth floor were well maintained. The location of the apartments enabled easy access to many cheaper drinking hotels and eating places especially nearby Dixon Street (China Town area). Overall our stay at the Oaks on Castlereagh was a pleasant experience without any problems.

Room Tip: Not all rooms are refurbished yet.

Thank you for your post and feedback on 03.12.2012. We are very disappointed to hear of your experience at Oaks on Castlereagh. The $150 pre authorization is required upon arrival for all guests and stated on paperwork as it acts as a security for the room. Unfortunately the issues with the noise were unavoidable as we are centrally located in the CBD. During the time of your stay building management has discovered a leak which they were investigated the cause of and the carpet dryers were essential in order to keep common areas dry during the process. I would like to extend my sincere apologies for the breakdown in communication between staff and management in regards to moving you to another room. I have also spoken with the head of housekeeping about the service that was provided to you and to ensure such instances are never repeated.Thank you again, we do appreciate your feedback as it is a vital tool in maintaining quality standards. While unable to prevent the disappointment of your stay, I do hope we are given the opportunity to accommodate you again when next in Sydney.

What I mean by purpose, no they are not the kind of rooms you feel like you are surrounded in luxury and want to veg out in, but the location is fantastic for getting to George St, eating out and Capitol theatre.
The highlight of service for us was Monica. A guest had been rude and taken advantage of car parking without checking they could stay an extra day. Monica moved her own car as we'd had to pay extra parking costs on the street, and let us park in her spot. Herself and her colleague were flat strap fielding numerous queries, but she remained unflappable and gave directions, information and took interest in our event. The staff are under the pump and handle themselves well. When you think of the size of the place you can appreciate that the problems people are talking about may not lie with organisation on the front line.

I booked two studio apartments at Oaks on Castlereagh for a four night stay and then read the reviews on Tripadvisor. I have to admit that after reading them I was absolutely terrified at what we would be met with when we arrived, particularly about the train noise.
Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff member and I did ask about being on the quieter side of the hotel. He explained that he could not do this immediatey but would try and work something out for the remainder of our stay. We were on the 25th floor and other family members were on the 11th floor. Yes, you can hear the trains but for us, it wasn't that much of an issue, so much so we weren't going to remind the staff about the promised room change. However, true to his word, the next day the room swap was organised.
Yes, the rooms are on the old side but they are large. Probably our biggest issue was that in both rooms the air-conditioning was louder than the trains. Luckily for us, Sydney had a run of cold weather so air-conditioning wasn't an issue, however in Summer I could see how this could be a problem.
Generally, we were quite satisfied with our stay. Literally, we were only there at night to sleep and the beds were comfortable enough! I have stayed in many Oaks apartments and this doesn't quite match the standards YET but they are in the process of modernising the apartments, so time will tell. Definately no complaints about the staff....they were all very friendly!

The Oaks on Castlereagh is a good location for central station. At the moment it is in need of a refurbishment our carpet was very badly stained and walls scruffs and scratches. The staff were very good in sorting out the few issues we had. The phone did not work and they ended up moving rooms. We were expecting calls in but people calling us were told there was no answer in the room so we must be out etc when we already told them it was not working. We did have a rollaway but it seemed they were unable to realise that we needed 3 towels and had to ask most days. The noise did not bother us but then it never does.

The rooms are big which is a plus with full kitchen however we had no facilities to use the oven top as there were not pots or pans. The oven itself to grill took forever.

I think the property needs to have a good overhaul and refurb as it is expensive as it is at the moment
