We wanted to revisit Uccello as we couldn't think of anywhere else in Sydney that would match our needs. We wanted to people watch at a fabulous bar (Pool Bar), enjoy a few cocktails and then move on to a delicious dinner, whilst still enjoying the view of the Bar. Our last meal at Uccello about 12 months ago fulfilled these criteria. This time we weren't so lucky. The Pool Bar is not what it used to be (or should I say it doesn't attract the same crowd that it used to). (the margarita was still delicious). Uccello was still buzzy and we were sat next to a delightful table of two lovely couples who we chatted with and had a great night with. Our corner table meant that we had no view of the bar, so we could have been in any restaurant. Saturday nights you have no choice with the menu - it's 3 courses for $100 or nothing. All the portion sizes were huge, so no complaints about that, but the quality just wasn't there. My grilled prawns were slightly overcooked, hubbie's lasagne just tasted cheesy rather than meaty, my gnocci vongole were SWIMMING in oil. The flavour was lovely, but it was just oil overload. (the bread was delicious though).
My main was the crumbed veal. I was warned that it would be served slightly pink. If only. If that was pink then my name's Donald Duck. Hubbie had the pork belly - a huge portion, incredibly rich. We attempted to take away the three quarters we had to leave as we couldn't finish it, but were told that was impossible (no problem - lots of restaurants do this now for some unknown reason). I've been taking food home from restaurants since 1982 and never suffered a single upset tummy. Anyway.. my suggestion is take your own foil so you can make your own foil "swan" remember those?
So, to sum up, if you get a decent table overlooking the bar Uccello is still fun and the food and service is fine, but it's certainly not top class.
