“Very convenient to Central Station & The Haymarket. VG value”
Reviewed April 4, 2012

My wife & I tried this hotel for the first time 2/3 April 2012 & quite by accident. We needed a comfortable room for just one night & very close to Central rail station due to our travel schedule. Despite a late arrival we were offered an unsolicited upgrade from a standard double to an executive suite on the top floor with views to the north. The suite was well equipped, neat & well presented. We had an excellent night's sleep in a very large & comfortable bed with no building or city noises; a real surprise as this location is one of the busiest traffic wise in Sydney. We did not dine in the restaurant or purchase the breakfast offers available at reception. This is a listed heritage hotel which may not appeal to all ages. A slight criticism would be stains in carpets which detracted somewhat, a minor criticism in the overall scheme of things. Night reception lady was efficient, polite & helpful. Check-out staff at 1000 very busy & some delay of 10-15 minutes should be expected. Having the option of a shower/bath was a real plus after a long day of rail travel. We came away refreshed & assessed the GSH as representing very good value. Whether a standard room without the much welcomed upgrade would have impressed us as much is, of course, open to conjecture. We will return to the GSH next time in Sydney & recommend to other travellers.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room as far away from George Street as possible

This hotel was clean, has a great location and the staff were very friendly and professional. We got lost in Sydney and couldnt find the parking and we rang the hotel and the staff member gave us directions. We stayed on the fifth floor and our room was very clean, bathroom was small but functionable , there was adequate supplies for tea and coffee.and the bed was huge!!
If you are looking for affordable accomodation at a great price with great location we recommend you stay here.

Room Tip: Room temps are set at 20C so if you like it cooler maybe get a fan to circulate the air more.

This hotel was very good value for money and the room was fine, the bed was huge, clean & comfortable. Bathroom was clean with nice clean towels, as someone said in another review there were no hand towels but hey if you're complaining about that then you'll complain about anything! We opted for the no housekeeping rather than pay $20 per night and it was fine, we just left dirty linen outside the door and collected fresh from reception. The reception staff were friendly and courteous and yes they charge to store your luggage but it's only $2 per bag so why would you complain about that? The location is perfect, 2-3 mins walk from Central Station, 5 mins from Chinatown & Paddy's Market, 10 mins from Darling Harbour & about 30-35 mins to Circular Quays. Lookout for the free shuttle bus that runs from Central Station down George St to Circular Quays ( no 555) All in all I would recommend this hotel as it's a good price for an excellent location.

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights from 25th March - 29th March 2012 with my 11 year old daughter. First impressions were good as the reception area was nice and clean and welcoming, but that's where it ended. We were dropped off outside the hotel to be greeted with a flight of steps. After travelling 10 hours from Thailand someone to help with our luggage would have been a welcome sight but instead I had to struggle with 2 suit cases and 2 lots of hand luggage up the steps. At reception we were given our room cards and told "we were lucky' as our rooms were ready, other wise we would have had to wait until the afternoon (we arrived at 10am). When we saw our room we were very disappointed to say the least. The room was dark and dingy with old brown blankets on the beds, the carped was dirty and worn and even had an iron mark on it. There was a socket hanging off the wall next to the bed. The TV remote had no batteries, the light switch was cracked and the bathroom tap was missing the "cold" sign. All the signs and notices were yellow from age. The beds were very soft and uncomfortable, the clock next to the bed didn't work, I experienced that when I set the alarm to wake us and it failed! There were no hand towels for the whole of our stay even when I requested then we were given a bath mat! On the second day even the swipe cards did not work the lift. We had to pay for the safe in the room the internet in the hotel and to store bags. All in all I wouldn't stay here again unless there were no other hotels available. The only positive was that it was less that 10mins walk to Darling Harbour and 5 mins to Central station, and it had tea making facilities and a fridge.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a room with a view over Darling Harbour.

Overall, a disappointing experience. Definitely not at the standards of a 4 star hotel. The room was very dingy with old carpeting. The bathroom was in need of a revamp. The bed was very uncomfortable; we would wake up with sore backs every morning. Worst thing was that the walls were paper thin, so EVERYTHING could be heard in the next room. As for the location, very good. Right on George street and close to the Central station. Buses close as well. Friendly enough staff. Don't agree with charging to store our luggage since our flight was in the afternoon and we had to check out by 10 so we carried our bags with us. Ok for 1-2 nights but try something else for a longer stay.

It isn't the Four Seasons but, at less than a 1/3 the price, I didn't expect it to be the Four Seasons. The location isn't bad (in Chinatown where there are lots of tasty things to eat even late in the evening), public transport is nearby and the place was clean, nice, and very friendly. The rooms were small but "well appointed" as they like to say and the place exceeded my expectations. I will certainly stay there the next time I travel to Sydney.

Given our first upgrade! Very quiet room, mattress comfy, plenty of hot water and spotlessly clean. Good all round hotel. We'll stay there again for that end of Sydney.

Room Tip: Middle of hotel around courtyard was quiet and sunny through the day.
