The routes available are quite good but the service levels are lacking in many areas.
Locals may get used to the ferries but tourists rely on information screens which were not working at numerous stops. Similarly Opal card scanners at various stops seemed unreliable.

The worse service levels seem to be on Sundays when the transportation system is very busy due to the $2.80 maximum day charge.
Timetables were pure fiction! Additional to this, ferries would arrive and then at short notice there would be a change of stops being visited.

Crowd control was appalling; they need to implement zig-zag lines to stop groups of arrogant passengers pushing in when the gates are opened.
On one occasion, I witnessed very heavy handed behaviour from NSW ferry staff at Circular Quay which was appalling and should not happen if basic queue control was in place. We felt like cattle being herded into the docking / boarding area which totally tarnished the travelling experience that day. These should be happy memories that you want tourists to take back and spread; not so here.
Poor show Sydney Ferries.

Highly recommend a ferry trip. The ferry is clean, comfortable, and the views on the harbour are gorgeous.

Very much enjoy Sydney ferries. So much more relaxing than buses or trains, and also great for just sightseeing.

We took ferries from the Quay to Taronga Zoo, and from Luna Park to the Quay, as well as from the Quay to Manly Beach.

The ride to Manly Beach is about 20 minutes. I would take this over the private speed boat ride to Manly. It is cheaper and the view is just amazing. Also, I love that the ferry port at Manly has an ALDI's grocery store.

Sit in the back of the ferry for your ride to Taronga Beach - about a few minutes in - you'll be able to get a selfie with both the opera house and the harbour bridge in one frame.

Purchase a Twilight pass to Luna Park. Once you're finished with your unlimited rides - the lights on the bridge and opera house will likely have turned on. Take the Ferry from Luna Park to the Quay - and enjoy the lighted up skyline of evening time Sydney. Writing this makes me want to go back... and we only left last week.

The ferry system is easy to navigate and works alongside the train and bus networks as well. We caught the ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo and enjoyed the views and cool breeze from the ferry. Options to sit inside or out, upstairs or down. A great way to travel across the extended Sydney area.
