“Very disappointing”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

My partner and I spent 3 weeks in various places in Australia and this hotel was our last before going home & by far was the worst. It was chosen for us by the tour company who assisted us putting our trip together & everything -flights, transfers & hotels were great, except this one. We arrived at 6pm to be told that our room wasn't ready yet due to an electrical problem! We were told it was only going to be 10 mins - 50 minutes later & offer of free breakfast for the next day, we finally got our room - we were exhausted by this time & very few places to sit & as it appears to be a through road to the opposite street - we were having difficulty avoiding getting bumped by the people walking through.
Our room was ok, very tired as already noted by several reviewers, bathroom (especially the door) needs renewed. The sofa looked a bit grubby so decided not to sit on it. The balcony was tiny but as the Chinese new year parade went by the hotel it was ideal to watch from - most of the other residents had to hang out of their windows.

I wouldn't bother with the breakfast, free, half price or otherwise - the worst buffet breakfast I have ever seen. A couple of choices of fruit juice - only a couple of inches at the bottom of the containers, white bread for toasting, coffee sachets or tea bags to add to the lukewarm water & 2 containers - 1 with grey coloured scrambled egg & the other with fat with bacon on. We had a bit of toast and left. It was served in the chinese restaurant & the waiter couldn't have cared less as all he did was text on his phone & grunt when we asked for some water to drink - he brought one small glass which wasn't even cold - disgusting.

The hotel is very close to the main station & buses. It is about 30 minutes walk from central quay but there is also regular free shuttle buses which take you there. Wouldn't choose to stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Rooms on George St appear to be noisier.

We have just stayed in this hotel for 14 nights and have this hotel ideal for our needs. We had a studio room with a small kitchen that comes with all utensils and saucepans. The room we were given was at the back of the hotel and was very quiet once the patio door was shut. We had our sheets changed regularly and the towels and tea towels daily.
On arrival there was tea, coffee, bread, milk, fruit and butter to get us started. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The location is also good for all public transport, but if you are like us walking all the sites was not a problem from this base.

Room Tip: If you are worried about the noise please request a back room. Please remember it is a city location...

I stayed @ Breakfree on George, Sydney for 4 nights, 11th Feb to 15th Feb. Very handy, great customer service, special thanks to Emre who has exceptional customer service, from the moment we arrived he made us feel welcome and felt as if I had known him for a long time, thank you Emre.
Situated in Chinatown made our stay a more pleasant experience - great shopping, went mad at Paddy's Markets.
Close to public transport and everything within walking distance a huge bonus.
I would highly recommend staying at Breakfree on George.

I stayed overnight at Break Free with a colleague for work purposes. We shared a 2 bed/ 2 bath apartment and I actually cannot fault our stay. The location, right in ChinaTown, makes it easy to get anywhere, by bus, taxi or foot - dinner at Capitol Square was followed by a stroll around and dessert in Darling Harbour - too easy! Our room, whilst a little 'tired', was well appointed, completely clean and very spacious, our balcony was almost a big as the room and showers (mine over the bath but still roomy) were good! Reception staff were friendly and efficient on arrival and departure, offering to hold our luggage for the day. Yes, the foyer does smell like a chinese restuarant, because it has a chinese restuarant in it!!!

My partner and i recently stayed here in a studio/1 bedroom unit. The room itself was nice - plenty of room with a balcony and great comfy king bed. That is about all the good things i can say though! On check in we were offered the deal of a buffet breakfast for half price at $10... definitely not what i expected! It sad brekfast went to 10 am. we got there at 9.20 and my partner had to scrape the remains of bacon and eggs to get a feed. I on the other hand, opted for cereal. I asked for low fat milk, as it said to ask for it and a spoon as there wasn't any left and the man looked at me like i was from another planet. He came back with milk but no spoon... so yes i ate my cereal with a fork! Also no glasses left for juice and the staff member stood nearby doing nothing at all. Also, everything is homebrand... from the milk he brought out to the packet of $1 bread sitting there... Smack on 9.30 there was a giant race by the 2 staff to pack everythin up as quickly as possible, no checking if everyone had finished... there was quite a few people still there so found that very rude when it said it finised at 10. The area was ok - a bit out of the city so if you are hoping to stay in the hustle and bustle don't go this far out. We got the room at a special - stay 3 nights pay 2 which made it reasonalby priced... no way woould i ever pay /stay there at full price!! All up - ok experience - nothing great but a good nights sleep.

First impressions after getting out of the Taxi wasn't good, i felt like I was going in for a chinese meal, hotel frontage non existant. After reading a few of the previous reviews we decided to ask for rooms on the highest level possible but unfortunately the hotel was fully booked....didn't believe that for one minute. We travelled with two other couples, two of us were on level 3 and the other on 6, even though we were on the third level we faced Sussex St and it was a quieter than the higher room facing George st. Aircon was either too noisy or too cold so tended to keep it off, no toilet seat lid in two out of the three rooms, tv remote didn't work, we had no space to put toiletries in the bathroom which was annoying, no cold water pressure in the bathroom, no mini bar not even any complimentary water! Bed was ok although only three pillows available which we found a little strange. Hotel breakfast .....don't bother even at a cost of $10 they cleared everything away ten mins before brekkie should have ended leaving some guests disappointed. Overpriced, so glad we got the one night free offer.

Travelled for business; my company's preferred hotels (Citigate, Mercure, Astina) were all booked so opted for Breakfree as it was nearby and in the acceptable price range - a bit more expensive but not greatly so. However, that doesn't tell the whole story; on balance, I'd say you don't get value for the money you spend - a big consideration for the business and leisure traveller alike.

The good things:
- it's in the heart of Chinatown, a short walk from Sydney Entertainment Centre & Darling Harbour, Paddy's market; Central Station (trains & buses) are also a few blocks' walk away as is a Monorail station (get in quick before it's decommissioned!)
- on arrival I was given a welcome bag with an apple and a bottle of water - neither necessary or particularly wanted, but it was a welcoming gesture;
- rooms on the 10th floor were a good size, clean, comfortable firm king bed;
- bathroom was clean, with basic toiletries provided and adequate bath linen;
- I had a kitchenette, but there's no need to cook as you're surrounded by cheap & cheerful Asian restaurants;
- if you observe Asian superstitions (where the number '4' is incredibly unlucky) then you'll be fine - there's no 4th floor and no room numbers on our floor contained a 4 (bad luck if you don't like 13, those are all there - I stayed in room 1013);
- disabled access: the George St entrance has stairs, but there's a platform lift for wheelchairs. If driving or in a taxi I recommend you use the Sussex St entrance as you can stop here for 5 minutes, especially important if you're not nimble or quick.

Not so good:
- Checking in, the lobby definitely doesn't impress. Tiny, and smelling very strongly of the on-site Chinese restaurant, it's a poor first impression (thankfully the smell didn't extend to the rooms);
- Noisy. My room faced George St and the windows were only single-glazed; there was an incredible amount of traffic noise, until well in to the early hours. I'm a city girl and can cope, but if traffic noise bothers you, ask for a room off George St, or reconsider your booking;
- the floor-to-ceiling windows open to a tiny balcony; fine for smokers I suppose, but parents ought to be wary;
- noise (again): the aircon unit was the noisiest I've ever experienced, took some getting used to;
- tired: like a great many Sydney hotels, it's in an old building - while the current refurbishment is fine, the larger fixtures are getting tatty which may matter to you, eg. The bathroom door was all chipped and fraying at the bottom;
- car access is poor. No on-site parking. For baggage set-down and pickup, short-term parking in Sussex St is hard to come by, and you can't stop on George St;
- wifi seems free, but has no capacity - won't even load basic social media.

Upshot: I didn't have any specific problems, but there's certainly a mismatch between what you pay for and what you get, especially compared to nearby alternatives. Next trip (a few weeks from now) I'll be returning to one of our company's recommended hotels. If these aren't available, I'll try out a different hotel as there's not enough about this Breakfree to encourage a return visit.

Room Tip: To get a quiet night's sleep, avoid rooms facing on George St
