“very disappointed”
Reviewed November 12, 2007

After a lovely stay on the Gold coast we stopped here for three nights. Travel weary after a long drive, we checked in and were told someone will be along with a golf /luggagecart shortly to the car park to help us with our bags as the car park is a long way from the rooms. We waited and waited and waited and ended up taking the bags ourselvesover several trips. We noticed the golf cart ferrying two blonde girls around the resort which was more of a priority than this weary family after a long trip. I wanted to cry when i saw our accomodation nothing like the website. Our "villa" was nothing more than a sort of glorified cabin which we had stayed in, in caravan parks for a third of the price. We were placed next to the tennis court which was very noisy with bright lights stay on for some of the evening. The next morning I awoke to noise from a tile cutter machine as building work was going on in villas next to us. I asked if we could be moved but they said no. This seemed odd as it was not a peak time and we noticed over our stay that many other "villas" were empty.

On entering the cabin (which is what i will call it). I was very disappointed as it was nothing like the website and what I was led to believe we had booked. Our kitchen which was really just a cupboard was very unworkable. We put lots of ice bloacks/ice creams in the freezer for the kids but they all melted as it did not work.

The bathroom had cracked tiles a few which were mouldy. The furnishings were a bit drab and caravan park like not what I expected after parting with hard earned cash for our first ever resort stay.

We all tried to grin and bare it and pretend we were having a good time. We tried to hang around the pool bar area as this was the only thing that made as feel we were in a resort.

The day we went home we found a used nappy behind the lounge from a previous tenant. We were wondering what the smell was. We requested the luggage cart and help (which is advertised) to take us back to the car. Once again we waited and waited and waited asked again and nothing eventuated. As we struggled with our bags up to the car park the luggage golf cart passed us again with two blonde bikini girls in it with no luggage. There is more that I could go on about. I wrote to break free telling them of our horrid time and lack of help from staff. It would have been easy to move us, but at the time I don't think they cared. I just got a standard we are sorry you did not enjoy yourself letter.

Aanuka was a huge dissapointment for me - we stayed in the self contained apartment/villas which were serviceable, but outdated and we got a headache from the disinfectant. They are over 2 levels, so if you have kids you need a gate at the bottom of the stairs.

The hotel itself was nice to wander around and had decent facilities, however the whole place needs a makeover!!!

On the plus side was the beach access which we used a lot to get out of the hotel!! The staff were nice enough and parking was close to where we stayed.

Another plus was checking out - could not wait to leave!!!

We booked a King Room at the Aanuka, unfortunately it was the furthest spot from the reception, restaurant and bar, although they do have 3 pools scattered across the complex. The actual villas looked nice, but our King room felt like a motel room (was clean though), the decor was very dated, and the bathroom looked like something from the 70s. The room itself was outside the security gates to the Aanuka complex. Reception even gave us a key for a room safe that didn't exist, and the room had a DVD player that had no remote control to operate it properly.

The room was probably the only negative, the staff are very friendly, and the benefit of staying at this end of the complex meant we had direct access to the beach from our front door. Diggers beach is great and a huge plus for this hotel.

Even though the hotel was full, it never seem too crowded, breakfast was included in our price and the usual range of food was available as expected. The restaurant is a bit pricey but the food was good. However, if you have a car, the selection of other restaurants is only a few mins drive away.

I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel by accident. Me and the kids were driving down from Queensland and had to stop for the night. Luckily they had accomodation available and at a good price. It is self catering but there are bar meals and a restaurant.

The theme of the resort seems to be tropical Bali I think-lots of palms and other foliage making it feel a bit like a rain forest. Very plesant and helpful staff at reception who went out of their way to help. I couldn't get aDVD to work but it was sorted out within the hour whilst we were at the pool.

The accomodation itself consists of various size lodges situated over quite a large area, so if you are adverse to walking you'd have to try and book something near reception. The rooms - lounge/diner, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms are big and all with mod cons, however, I only used the washing machines, tumble dryer and TV/DVD. Very comfortable beds but I am not sure what standard room I had so, could be better or worse. There was a patio area outside and in some cases this was quite private although others seem to be fairly open. As I said the site is quite widespread but this didn't worry us.

The two pool area are freeform tropical style (a bit cool for me) with rocks , spas and bridges. The kids loved it. They could provide a few more loungers and at one point I think they ran out of towels. Access to the beach is a little hard to find and not as close as you would think but it is a huge and sandy. It is not not patrolled and there are warnings of rips.

You can order lunch from two poolside bars/cafes but for evening meals there is only one restaurant and it is quite pricey, especially with three kids to feed! Having said that the childrens menu and food was pretty good with large potions. The adult menu was more Haute Cusine so portion sizes weren't the best. To eat once or twice there would be our limit but it was lovely and I think everything was cooked to order. The kids thought the pizza was the best they had ever had! The view to the sea is stunning and the windows fold right back , although, this allowed the huge moths and other bugsto come in.

As previous reviewers have commented, it is a little dated (I guess they can't refurbish every year?) but we have booked four nights for Christmas and I'll remember to take my camera next time!

Our first stay at a resort, we booked a 5 night romance recharge. We got a paradise spa bure which was lovely and quiet.

However a dirty rag was left behind in the spa that had obvioulsy been used by the cleaners, the bed sheets had a couple of dirty spots as did the lounge, and a piece of someones fingernail had been left behind in the bathroom also. The toaster didn't work properly and you had to hold the lever down to cook the toast. (reception was also quiet hard to find) and the carparks were very tight and painful to find a park at times. Undercover parks are limited.

On the up side, the glass roof over the spa in our room was great, the spa itself was a great way to relax. The heated pool also made for great night swimming despite the distance from our room. The setting of the resort is lovely but it seemed a little run down in areas and we expected something a little more "flash" for the rates that are charged. We didn't use the restaurant or day spa as we were going more for a relaxed feel rather than dressing up to the nines to head to the restaurant.

All in all we enjoyed our stay and the access to the beach and Macauleys Headland for walks was great. Nice for a short stay but not sure I would go there again.

My wife and I stayed at Aanuka for a night in the Honeymoon suite,

GOOD
Modern furniture
Excellant set out
Brilliant glass roof over bedroom spa
Bedroom spa
Bed
Pool is the best

BAD
Ants in bathroom (lots)
dated bathroom and spa (very)
couch was chosen for style not comfort
Buffet breakfast was very poor (backpacker like)

Overall I would stay again but I will not be getting the buffet breakfast again.
