Central Backpackers

Filthy - very sub Australian standard, especially for price. Noisy, poor ventilation, I wish I had visited this site before booking. Staff tried hard to be friendly. A central location and has potential to be much better simply by cleaning

We stayed in the plantation backpackers for one night. It was kind of an emergency, so we could handle the horrible conditions for one night, but I'd never stay there again.
When we came into the room, there was the bin, dirty by some brown stuff (I don't wanna know what it was!) under the window, which was probably broken. The beds seemed to be clean, but a bug was welcoming us on the sheets. The floor was disgusting.
At 10pm, there was music coming from everywhere, I guess the club was really close. The basses made us feel we're in the middle of it. The atmosphere was as bad as the hygiene.
The only good thing was the nice staff, the free wifi and the free storage after checking out. Still, for this price no way!

I was recommended this for a cheap overnight stay whilst on a trip to Brisbane. Needless to say that I wish I had chosen to stay at a proper motel further back from the highway. It's noisy, poorly serviced and I even had the indignity of being supplied with 'new' towels which actually had skid marks on them from a previous user. When I complained I was begrudgingly given a new set. The bunk beds are serviceable, facilities for coffee making etc are the bare minimum. Other people that I chatted to said that they didn't mind the place although one gent commented that he had been staying there for a couple of days and was still waiting for a hot shower as each time he went for one the water was cold. Day trips to surrounding tourist attractions can be organised from the front desk and the location is central to shops and places to eat. There's some lock up facilities to leave your packs etc if you don't want to leave them in your room but overall, this will cater to people who are not really fussy on where they lay their heads.

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs to block out the noise.

We stayed here in late 2012 and we were dissappointed! The website and flyers at other hostels promised free welcome drinks, TV and games room (with Wii and a lot of channels) and kitchen. The drinks were not given since they had stopped with that 2 months earlier and when we said it still said so on their webpage, the guy said that it should have been changed. The TV and games room was two couches and a cabinet with books and a couple of old boardgames. The TV and Wii were missing and when we asked the staff, the guy was surprised at their absence. Learned from another guy that the stuff was gerting repaired (or something). The kitchen was dirty and too small to accomodate for the amount of guest the place could take. The oven (and attached stove) was broken. The hostelpart lacked character in my opinion, felt more like a hotel turned hostel. But apart from broken promises, uninformed staff, small and broken kitchen and a lack of character, the place was alright. Resteaurant (good food) and party bar/disco downstairs was pretty sweet! We were dissapointed but overall, not that bad. You could do a lot worse.

The friendly and extremely helpful staff were literally the only blessing that this hideous place offered. Being placed above a night-club, it's lucky I was tired in my ten bed dorm, filled with hostile bad mannered people, when going to bed. The bathrooms were unreal with the typical disgustingness that you avoid no matter what, (pictures soon to come), and the shower taps would repeatedly fall off. The kitchen area is relatively clean- because nobody uses it- same in fact, with the lounging area. This did not improve the unsafe environment for personal belongings however, or the general seedy feel of the place. As I say though, the staff knew all I needed to know about the area and were generous with information and hospitality.

Plantation backpackers are the only hostel in the area that don't collect guests from the bus stop. The walk is a good 15 minutes, and uncomfortable with a backpack. We arrived at the reception and thought our luck had changed when we were upgraded from a 10 bed to a 4 bed. We were even more thankful when we realised the 10 bed was full of rowdy English boys on some kind of lads holiday...in Australia. Unfortunately we dodged some bullets only to be hit by others. Everyone in the hostel was loud and intent on getting drunk. We are a young couple, but had to be up at 4 am to catch another bus, so we just needed somewhere to rest our heads. At 2 am the disgusting group of boys fell into the room opposite, one of them was in our 4 bed along with a girl. By 3am my boyfriend and I were both kept awake by the noise of the people in our room getting friendly, and then snoring ridiculously loud. For me this just represented the whole feel of the hostel. We went to go and sleep in the kitchen for an hour before our bus, but the state of the kitchen was so revolting there wasn't even anywhere to sit. The hostel was dirty, noisy and generally unpleasant. The hostel does has free wifi, and cheap delicious meals in the bistro section downstairs. Stay somewhere else, go and get dinner at this place, but leave shortly after. Do not stay here. It was AWFUL. Worst hostel I have ever and hopefully will ever stay in.

The staff here were fantastic; they were very friendly and upgraded us to a private room on our second night. They organised a shuttle bus to pick us up from the train station and drove us to the beach the next day and showed us the best surf shops. The facilities are fine, although the kitchen was quite small and we had to take it in turns to cook. The TV room was fantastic with loads of films saved on the hard drive so we lounged there most nights watching films. The rooms were ok, although in the dorm out of the six lockers only one worked. However the rooms and the kitchen area are about to be renovated so that will be fixed. Excellent hostel.
