“Great spa! Excellent place to a couple to enjoy a romantic stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

I got a very fair price for a package of 1 night+3 course dinner at evening+free spa+breakfast. (not weekend). The 3 course dinner was better than I had expected after reading older reviews here on TA. We brought the wine menu (not part of the package) and it seems they would just re-fill the glasses over and over, so I was very pleased with the dining experience.

But the real reason you go here is for the spa+ wellness. The spa was not overcrowded since they have a maximum limit. Often you could get one of the small spa's for yourself.

As a couple we had a very romantic stay at the hotel.

The hotel room is nothing speciel and I would give it a 3* ratring, but the view over the sea/forest from the sea-side is perfect.

Room Tip: Ask for sea-side view! Rooms on ground level with sea-side view also had a terrace that during the...

We were generally quite pleased with one one-night stay in Dec. 2012. After a white-knuckle drive through thick fog at night from Aarhus, which made it a little hard to find the place, we were happy to settle in for a nice dinner in the hotel's restaurant. The dining area and bar were quite elegant (in a traditional Scandinavian way) and we enjoyed our dinner and complimentary breakfast there quite a bit. We weren't really sure going into it what the spa itself would be like, but we were more than impressed. Spotlessly clean and modern with many types of pool areas (a large one with normal-temp water, and small rooms with quite hot and quite cool water), saunas, steam rooms, special cannon showers, fireplace, etc. But the best part was the traditional sauna hut outside. We shared the hut with a dozen Danes; though the staff-person who explained everything about the sauna process spoke mostly in Danish, the other Danes were happy to translate what she was saying in flawless English. We stayed in the hut for about 10 minutes, went out and rolled around in the snow, came back to the hut, and repeated the process a few times. It was our first time for such a sauna experience. There is also a large outdoor hot tub that is connected to the indoor pool via a tunnel/passageway. We experienced a beautiful night sky (with some shooting stars!) while enjoying the warm water. (And we shared the tub with a nice Danish couple who just got married that day because it was 12/12/12/.) Our advice would be if you're thinking about going on a weeknight, go on Wednesday, as that is the only weeknight they stay open late (till 11:00, I believe). We liked it so much that we got up early in the morning to enjoy the spa around sunrise; we were the only people there at that time, which was quite nice. Our room itself was just ok. Kinda small with few amenities. Clean but fairly non-descript. Didn't bother me but my wife thought it a bit small for the price, especially the tiny bathroom. It was in the heart of the old sanitorium section; the hallways had a distinct 'Shining' feel, which we thought was funny. If you want a nicer, perhaps bigger room with more amenities, maybe other parts of the spa complex would be better. But don't let that deter you, as the spa itself definitely exceeded our expectations. We didn't take advantage of other services there that involved extra fees (massages, facials, etc; they even have an area where you can put your legs in a large fish tank and have small fish peck away at your skin, which we had heard about at other European spas but have never tried). We saw some comments prior to the trip about distant, not super friendly staff, but everyone we dealt with was quite courteous (as were the Danes pretty much everywhere we went on our one-week DMK trip).

Room Tip: The rooms in the main sanitorium area are small but convenient to the restaurant area. If you want a...

This is about the spa and restaurant only.
Delicious, tasty, Nordic style dishes. Upscale prices, but worth it.
The spa must be made in heaven. Formed largely on the Kneipp tradition with healing through changing between hot and icy cold water. One poolroom has underwater music, secially composed for this place. Grey Granite everywhere, also in the pools. All the different waterpools you need, including on outside 32 degrees C pool placed in the middle of the century old English-style park with a fantastic view over the park and Vejle Fiord. We visited in winter with lots of snow around us:-) Water, tea, coffee and fruit included, so are towel, slippers and bathrope.

We were slightly disappointed about two things by our stay at Vejlefjord.
We had a double room in the old central building. So it was expected to be old, but not that it would appear rather worn or that the bathroom would be very boring indeed. Particularly not since Vejlefjord is being promoted as a spa-resort.
I would though expect that it might be different if you're placed in one of the newer buildings placed next to the old main building. But then you probably won't have quite the view that we enjoyed from our room.
The view we had over the park and over Vejle Fjord could not be faulted - beautiful.
The second disappointment was that even though they might have 18-20 Km walking trails around the hotel, they did not mention that all 18 km trail is within 1-2Km from the hotel building. So if you want to walk maybe 10 Km on forest trails, you have to circle the hotel a couple of times.
But then there's the good stuff :-)
Both the food and the service in the restaurant was really good.
It did not appear as overpriced. They have a fixed a la carte menu, and a three course menu that changes daily.
You can combine across them if you like.
No real choices for vegetarians.
A very good wine list with a good spread in type and taste, and with reasonable prices.
And then there's the thermic baths!
I have honestly not much to compare with at this time, but it appeared really good to me.
A large central heated pool, and several smaller pools with different "themes". A hot pool, a cold pool, light-, sound-, aroma-pools, different shower options, several saunas - dry sauna and steam baths - a heated outdoor pool (and sauna) and chairs for just sitting and relaxing with a book (if you brought one), else there is magazines available.  Complementary coffee, tea and fruit is included.
A very nice experience indeed.
There's also a lot of massage and spa-treatments on offer, but we didn't try those.
A little tip here - take two towels with you to the dressing room and leave one in a locker. The other one will probably get wet when you bring it into the spa area.

I spent one night at this hotel in November 2012, quiet place with a large park on the seaside. This is probably a great place for a conference, or for relaxation, when I was there it was dark and raining. No unpleasant experiences :-)

On the 1st of March 1900, the sanatorium for people suffering for tuberculosis opened its doors for the first time for self-paying tuberculosis patients. The price for a stay was DKK 6-8 for a single room.

At the end of the 1940s, the effort for people suffering from tuberculosis was almost complete, and the sanatorium had fewer and fewer patients.

After a modernisation in 1957, Vejlefjord Sanatorium was used as a sanatorium for people suffering from mental illnesses.

From 1985, rehabilitation of people suffering from brain damage became a new core competence of Vejlefjord, and in 1989, the place was given an extensive renovation of rooms and facilities, which meant that course facilities for treatment providers, employees as well as relatives could be provided along with the rehabilitation.

Today, the beautiful main building is a 4-star hotel with a 5-star conference centre.

This review is only of the actual spa section with the thermal baths.

I have heard that DKK 180 million has been spent on the rebuild with the thermal baths, and this figure is probably not completely off, as every detail has been considered and only the most expensive pieces of furniture and materials have been used.

As so many times before, we had chosen a suite, and I would definitely recommend this to others, as you get your own wonderful roof terrace with a view of the fantastic park and not least Vejle fjord.

Wearing the housecoat and slippers handed out to you, you go directly from your room and down to the spa area, which consists of 10-12 treatment rooms, a reception desk and a large lounge area offering free fruit, water and various types of herbal tea.

From the spa area, you move on to the gem of the collection, the thermal baths, which are made of granite. The large surface of natural stone form pools, caves and corridors. Each bath, each cave and each room offers a unique sensory experience.

There are 7 different baths: The panorama bath, the fire bath, the ice bath, the aroma bath, the light bath, the sound bath and the forest bath. I cannot describe to you in words the amazing feeling you get in each bath, so therefore, I can only say that you have to try it.

Apart from the various baths, there is a forest sauna, a small intense sauna of 110 degrees Celsius and three steam baths with steam of 38, 40 and 42 degrees Celsius respectively.

Everywhere, there are nice pieces of lounge furniture that can be used freely, and they are practically all placed in a way that lets you look at the grand nature.

As you can probably understand, I am very thrilled, and I have never seen anything like this anywhere else in Scandinavia. The drawbacks that there are, such as the massage (we tried 4 different massage therapists, who were not at the same level as the therapists of other good places) and the food, which is quite dull, should not destroy the general impression of the actual spa experience, which is the reason why I am giving all this praise along with 5 great stars.

I have decided to review the hotel’s restaurant separately, as the assessment of the restaurant is completely at the bottom and therefore would have brought down the review of the spa experience.

This review is ONLY about the spa. Have not tried rooms or restaurant.

Compared to others with same concept in Denmark, it's a nice place. VERY beautifil view. Nice size, decor and interior. Kept nicely clean, but maintenance is lagging here and there.
Price level .. I find it a little too high all considered.

The "not impressed" is because I've tried bigger and better spas outside Denmark (Holland) at much more reasonable prices. I know it's a little unfair to compair across borders - but even inside Denmark I've been to a spa, where I felt it was better value at the price.

I just couldn't help thinking "I've tried better" after visiting this spa..
