Owner description: The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned and Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium. That's 2 attractions in one! We are situated on around 7 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. With a wide variety of both native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia, there is something for everyone. Wander in and have a casual stroll around the park, or make a day of it with family, friends and make use of our picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities. Our Animal Encounters provide visitors with an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

No mention online that aquarium is closed...for some time according to receptionist, yet price still the same. Found glass screens around the animal enclosures both very scratched and very dirty so viewing of animals was disappointing. Lions were the saving grace .....beautiful and viewing area was great. Whole zoo needed a serious upgrade to warrant the entry price. Have visited lots of zoos worldwide.......wouldn't recommend. Go to any of the free museums instead?

We LOVE animals so visiting the zoo was top on our list and we were not disappointed. It is a smallish zoo which is perfect for little people and you just follow the trail which guides you through the zoo - no trying to figure out maps!!! Bliss!! The zoo was so clean and the animals all are well looked after. The lion display was just beautiful - could have stood there all day! The aquarium is average but there are some interesting creatures in there!! Overall, we had a great time and would highly recommend visiting Canberra Zoo!

The National Zoo and Aquarium is very family-friendly, but we went just as a (mature!) couple and had a wonderful time. The layout is user-friendly - not too hilly and you don't have to trek miles to see all that is on offer - and all the animals are obviously well-housed, fed and cared-for. We particularly enjoyed the 'stories' that went with many animals, as they added to our interest and understanding of animal breeding and behaviour, but children would love being able to get up close and personal to so many creatures, with well-advertised feeding and meet-and-greet sessions with the animals throughout the day. The aquarium was a surprise; although not large it had offerings we haven't seen elsewhere - and then you come upon a wonderful, close-up view of the bears in their enclosure - from inside the aquarium! It's a gem of an animal sanctuary, in the true sense of the word.

I was in Canberra with a mate today, and we were looking for places to go, and we saw that the national zoo and aquarium was highly recommended here on tripadvisor, and I'm so glad we went! We both loved it! So many animals to see and so many vantage points to be able to see them from. And all of the enclosures a really quite close together, so it wasn't a long walk to get from one species to another. And many people on here have been saying it was quite a small zoo, but we spent at least an hour there all up, we found it quite large and were exhausted by the end of it. So much to see!

We did the 'meet-a-cheetah' experience which was 15 minutes patting and playing with two twelve month old cheetahs. The staff are fantastic all round the zoo and there is plenty of opportunity to see the animals - unlike other zoos where they always seem to be hiding!

I'm not always sure about keeping animals in small spaces but the keepers explained that many of the animals have been raised in captivity. The areas and the animals all appeared very well looked after and the bond between Ryan and his big cats is awesome to see.
