Another of Canberra's beautiful open spaces where you can go and just take in the breath taking scenery or look at the buildings on one side or the other.

Walking and biking tracks provide plenty of opportunities for people to exercise or meander beside the lake. A good restaurant and cafe sits on the high point of the Park overlooking the National Library and Gallery and the fountain in the middle of the lake.

We love this park. We spend a few months in Canberra every year in the winter, and we go to Commonwealth Park about once a week. As others have noted, it is a little brown in winter. This year, there is more construction than usual, so it isn't quite as nice, but it is still great.

There is an amazing amount of birdlife to watch, including cockatoos, swamphens, rosellas, coots, wood ducks, black swans, and many others. And, they seem to be active during most of the day- not just in morning and evening. The Nerang Pools are beautiful in fall with the leaves and then in winter with the browned grasses and eucalypts reflected in the pools. The sculptures are also quite nice. There is a stone fort playground at the back of the Nerang Pools. It can get a bit crowded on weekends, but other days is usually pretty empty. There is another plaground up by the displays building with picnic tables nearby. The indoor displays on the design of Canberra are interesting, and a great getaway to warm up or get away from a temporary drizzle. The cafe is pretty good.

The walk along the lake is nice, with an up-close view of the Captain Cook fountain when it is going, and good views of the Parliament and other buildings across the lake.

This may not be the #1 pick on a short visit to Canberra, but it has a good combination of walking that is interesting to adults, with playgrounds and birds to keep the kids interested for those with young children. It would make a great outdoor break from all the indoor sites that Canberra has to offer. I am sure it is better during Floriade, but I definitely recommend in winter as well.

The park is walkable from Civic/CBD area, pram friendly and has restrooms. There is also plenty of parking.

In winter the park is cold and uninviting but flower beds have been planted in preparation for the Floriade festival in Spring time. Throughout the year there are abundant types of water birds in the vicinity and if you are lucky you might spot some fish in the ponds. In general the park provides many opportunities for walks.
