A few nights in this very trendy but beautiful hotel was a real treat. The design is fantastic, and the meals were excellent. I was very impressed with the staff - I expected the young, hip staff to be a bit dismissive of an older traveler, but they were uniformly helpful and polite, even to the extent of approaching me in the lobby where I waited for someone simply to ask if I needed any assistance.
My only complaint is that the lighting in the room was quite poor - lots of down-lights etc but hard to work at the bench; and the controls were a bit hard to work out. But a bonus - the windows actually open!
Overall, a treat to stay in such a well-located hotel with lovely views over the Lake.
I'm not sure why Hotel Hotel has such a great reputation when the service is lack lustre at best and appalling at worst. I stayed here with a friend from Sydney as a treat before my baby is born and before my baby shower on the Sunday; how wrong a choice we made.
First off hotel guests aren't given any consideration when booking for Monster. I have had a not great experience there previously; too cool for school staff and tricksy food at outrageous prices.
But decided to clean the slate and give it another go.
This time the online booking system wasn't working I kept getting patronisingly told "that means there is no availability" having used an online booking system once or twice for things- I patiently explained it said there was space at 530 and 9pm but would not allow me to complete the booking.
Fine, we went to an Italian restaurant nearby which was great.
The rooms- small I see what they are trying to do with the design aesthetic not for me but no problem. The bathrooms were a good size- reminiscent of the change rooms at Elixir Health club in Bondi junction especially with the Aesop products bolted down.
Due to the debacle with dinner I asked reception specifically if we needed to make a reservation for breakfast and was assured we did not.
First thing we were asked Sunday morning? "Have you made a reservation? We're quite full"
Ridiculous.
When we went to ask for a paper at the concierge we were told the Canberra times was available. When we asked for an interstate paper we were told
"I just said the Canberra times was there you are in Canberra you know"
.... Is that how you treat guests during the week who want the Fin review?
What a cosmopolitan attitude from a teenage concierge not really equipped to provide any standard of service it would seem.
Thankfully already I've dissuaded all interstate guests at my party from ever staying here. I'm so disappointed that what as supposed to be a fun relaxing time was made stressful by the very people who are supposedly there to enhance your experience.
Never again.
Just across from the lake and very close to the city, this is the best location in the ACT. The restaurant is excellent and the view from some apartments very nice. It is an ideal location for a short visit to Canberra.
The contrast could not have been more stark versus Peppers the night before. This hotel has amazing design, friendly staff and is cutting edge with a great vibe. Free wifi and coffee with the innovative breakfast and free cycle hire complete the amazing package.
Hotel Hotel is the very definition of a try-hard hotel. Hipster to a fault, its marketing material says it "take(s) inspiration from the Australian shack", with "lay rendered walls, salvaged oak beds, overhead rain showers, and (oh my) windows that open". What this means in practice though is narrow, oppressive corridors and a dark, claustrophobic aesthetic that beats no resemblance to any Australian shack I have ever seen. I had been booked by my hosts into a "cosy" room. Their smallest, for sure, but still no bargain at $275 per night on their corporate rate. It was dark, with a small window onto an internal courtyard and hardly big enough to swing a cat in. The bed was overly soft and I could hear every single thing going on in the corridor. I really hope I never have to stay here again.
