Ever since the Capital Milk Bar in Manuka closed down, the title of Canberra’s best burger has been up for grabs… until now. Although it’s a chain restaurant, Grill’d has the recipe for the best burger in town. And they’ve somehow managed to make it healthy too.
The burgers are beautifully light and flavoursome, with each of the ingredients distinguishable in their own right. The beef is deliciously seasoned and perfectly cooked. The salad is fresh and tasty, and they even manage to keep the lettuce crispy. My favourite is the Almighty, which loads bacon, egg and cheese onboard too, all of which going right out to the edge of the bun. An absolute winner! The Simply Grill’d is the base model, but I find as a minimum it needs the addition of cheese when my wife talks me out of the Almighty from time to time. I’ve only gone off-beef once to try out the chicken ceasar option, which was quite good. But in my heart of hearts, I’m an Almighty man. And chips are an added extra, but well worth it. They’re seasoned with herbs, and an absolute foodgasm with the herb mayo dipping sauce.
Service is always friendly when you order and pay up front at the counter, and it’s never too long before the team serves up at the table. A great thing they do at Grill’d is give you tokens to put into your favourite of three charity jars. At the end of each month, the charity with the most tokens gets $300, with the other two getting $100 each.
The only negative for the Woden store is the atmosphere. Yes, I know it’s a burger joint. But I find the music a bit loud and intrusive, and the cleanliness can be a bit sloppy on occasion. But it’s certainly not a deal breaker. If that bothers you, they have takeaway, and their position on the outside of the Westfield Woden shopping mall on Corinna St makes the hit and run easy.
All said and done, best burgers in town. I’m in there every chance I get.
